This was my first encounter with this species (seen in Bahamas). I read that they also inhabit parts of south Florida.

Smooth-billed Ani used to be uncommon but regular breeding birds in South Florida, but they have declined in recent years and are no longer reliably found at any location. After trying for staked-out Anis several times in South Florida, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to zip down for this bird in Jacksonville as my last life bird in 2018.

Another interesting find at Salt Pier. These flower corals were another one of those new things that weren't really new.

A creek in central Pennsylvania. Trying something new and different with post-processing. I'm not sure about this one.
VERY cool! This is a juvenile smooth trunkfish. Check out my 2011 videos to see what it matures into. You can get a rough idea by looking at the Spotted Trunkfish video in this set.
This picture was taken in Hightown, which is about 9 miles North of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK.
Hightown is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. It is 9 miles (14 km) north of Liverpool city centre and is located on the coast near the boundary of the Mersey Estuary and Liverpool Bay. The River Alt joins the sea at this point and forms an estuary.
Hightown has a population of just over 2,200.
Hightown beach is the site of a former wartime military base known as Fort Crosby. The fort was situated midway between Hightown and Hall Road and housed a number of Italian and German POW's during WWII. Following its decommission at the end of the war a small cinema screen within the complex was reputedly used by local residents for a number of years until the camp was finally demolished in the mid-1960s. Remains of many of the buildings, pathways and fences can still be seen today.
The most authoritative local history reference on Hightown, Merseyside is: "My Hightown 1897 - 1969" by Joe Bulman. 1st ed. 1975. The 3rd ed. revised and enlarged by Andrew Lee-Hart and Matthew Tinker published by Sefton Libraries, Southport, 2003.

Smooth rays are known to charge divers in a bit of a territorial display of authority. It's happened to me before but this was full on! After i saw this guy from the surface, i descended into about 9 m of water. I lay flat on the bottom, and it charged straight for me. I stayed motionless, holding my ground and trying not to move a muscle. It was a game of chicken, (but with a ray) and no one was backing down. I thought it would approach closely, and then veer away at the last moment , but no...it went straight over the top of me....a 2-3 metre wide mass 'breathing' down on me as it passed over me lying on the ground. One hell of an encounter! We became quiet good friends over the next 20-30 minutes as he continued to do close inspections...none as close as this first one though.
