'THE SMALLEST HOUSE IN GREAT BRITAIN' - 'CONWY' - 28th DECEMBER 2018

North America's smallest dabbling duck are back for the winter. The males are just stunning, especially when they stand on a submerged log & pose in the sunlight.

Some Pygmy Marmoset facts:

. The Pygmy Marmoset can rotate their heads 180 degrees.

They travel in groups of up to 9 members, called a troop.

The parents stay together for life, never leaving each other side if possible.

They almost always give birth to twin babies.

The father helps deliver the babies and carries them on his back for the first two weeks.

They can leap 15 feet into the air

They have a 12 year lifespan.

I was again delighted to see my young friend as I am sure that it is on of the two babies of the Hummer family I have been documenting. I had brought this blooming Aloe and placed it close to the nest when the female was still feeding the babies to make it a little easier on her......never thought that the offspring themselves would return to feed on the flowers!! This little guy is 45 days old.

Smallest of the spiked dinosaurs, the Snowosaurus can be identified by it's single spike.

This one was spotted while it was extracting it's food from the snow. If you look close you can see the glass like tongue.

Commonly found on North Eastern coastal regions, they have been know to make short visits to southern climates.

With the firecrest, the goldcrest is the UK's smallest bird. They're dull greyish-green with a pale belly and a black and yellow stripe on their heads, which has an orange centre in males. Their thin beak is ideally suited for picking insects out from between pine needles.

One of the calmest but smallest of the Scottish Lochs

It also holds on to its mist for far longer than most. This allows for spectacular morning shoots but capturing this timeless quality can be a challenge..

Goldcrest....Britain's smallest bird

Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the subspecies. They have webbed paws, which means that they’re brilliant swimmers and they often take to the water to cool off. Their stunning coats of orange and black stripes are unique to each animal and help them to camouflage by breaking up their body shape. Sumatran tigers have stripes which are closer together than other tigers.

They are solitary animals, only coming together to mate. Gestation takes about 100 days from mating to birth, and baby tigers will remain with their mothers for up to 2 years. A litter can be between 1 and 7 cubs. Chester Zoo’s mum here has produce a few litters.

William Fitzsimmons - If You Would Come Back Home

I was afraid the pair of Violet Green Swallows that had been visiting a nest spot in our eaves had moved on after two *really* unseasonably hot days early last week, but two days ago they appeared again and have now been visiting even more frequently - looks like they're gearing up to use the nest. I understand they'll sometimes build more than one nest site at first then finally choose their favorite as the time draws near, so I'm hoping it's this one if that's the case.

The feeders have all been taken down at my place for the most part and this rail where they hung has become a favorite spot for this male of the swallow pair to hang out in the mornings. I'd say that's a fair trade for losing the feeders for the time being - I'd much rather watch this fellow keeping watch than listen to 20 screaming Pine Siskins bicker with one another. :)

This very small variety of swallow is a favorite and to give you an idea of size, that's just 550 paracord that's tied to the rail there. He's not much bigger than a chickadee, but damn is he handsome.

Great love for this, dutch pride, bird

kestrel.

one of my favorite birds. i have got several shots of these little falcons before - but never one like this!!

my friend doris and i got up at 5 am this past saturday to go to mound city to a bird "festival". we went on a sunrise birding walk and saw (and heard) many bird species, including a wood thrush, baltimore oriole, kestrel, bobolink, blue grosbeak, eastern towhee, wilson's warbler, brown thrasher, gray catbird, white-eyed vireo, yellow-billed cuckoo, and more that i didn't catch the names of. we had an excellent guide with us who could identify both the sound and sight of every single bird we encountered!!!

doris and i had so much fun - like two little kids at an amusement park. she and i decided our early morning birding (and photography) adventure was definitely worth the loss of sleep!

Pure exultation at finding the Worlds Smallest Park!

Mill Ends Park is twenty-four inches in diameter and contains 452.16 square inches of land. Its title of being the worlds smallest park has been hotly contested but it has retained the title. To Portland's credit, when they redid the road around it, they saved the park. Keep Portland weird!

This is the smallest European woodpecker, with adults being 14 to 16.5 cm (5.5 to 6.5 in) long with a wing span of 24 to 29 cm (9.4 to 11.4 in) and weighing 17 to 25 g (0.60 to 0.88 oz). A sample of 50 lesser spotted woodpeckers in Great Britain averaged 19.8 g (0.70 oz) in body mass.

From its small size and its habit of spending most of its time in the tops of tall trees in woods and parks, this little woodpecker is often overlooked, but if sighted on a trunk it may at once be identified by the broad barring on the wings and narrower bars across the lower back.

The male has a crimson crown, a brown forehead, a black superciliary stripe, and another from the base of the bill to the neck. The nape and upper back are black, but the lower back is barred with black and white. On the wings are broader and more conspicuous bars, and the outer tail feathers are also barred. The under parts are white with streaks on the flanks. The bill and legs are slate-grey.

In the female the crown is white, but the young birds of both sexes have more or less crimson on the head. There are no marked seasonal changes.

Our Smallest Bird of Prey in the British Isles and this male can be half the size of a female, quite common in raptors, as it allows them to hunt different prey and able to live in smaller territories.

The male has a blue-grey back, ranging from almost black to silver-grey in different subspecies. Its underparts are buff- to orange-tinted and more or less heavily streaked with black to reddish brown.

The female and immature are brownish-grey to dark brown above, and whitish buff spotted with brown below. Besides a weak whitish super cilium and the faint dark malar strip which are barely recognizable in both the palest and the darkest bird.

The face of the Merlin is less strongly patterned than in most other falcons. Nestlings are covered in pale buff down feathers, shading to whitish on the belly.

Smallest gull in the world. Compact with short legs, short rounded wings, and small bill. Breeding adults have black head, pale gray back, white wingtips, and blackish underwings. Nonbreeding adults have a black ear patch and smudgy cap. Immatures are similar to nonbreeding adults but with a black “M”-shaped pattern on the upperwing, especially noticeable in flight. When perched, this looks like a thick horizontal stripe across the wing and shoulder. Primarily a Eurasian species, breeding in marshy wetlands and wintering offshore or in coastal waters. Uncommon to rare in North America, where typically found singly among flocks of Bonaparte’s Gulls on lakes, beaches, estuaries, or bays. Note adult Little Gull's smaller size, white wingtips, dark underwings, and more rounded wings compared to Bonaparte's. eBird
