six word story for Flickr Group Roulette

Abandoned for a few decades, this place has now been restored.

Thanks to federal stimulus funding and the work of the East Valley Historical Society, the North Shore Yacht Club has been renovated to its original appearance.

The revamped club will serve as a senior center, community center, and museum - the latter under the direction of North Shore preservationist Jennie Kelly, who has already helped bring the long-extinct boat races back to the sea. The new museum is where the tale of Albert Frey's shimmering yacht club - with its fantastic ups and downs - will finally be told.

The building and museum will be open to the public in the very near future.

The North Shore Yacht Club is an historically significant--not to mention architecturally significant--part of California's legacy. The North Shore Yacht club was the whimsical design of noted architect Albert Frey, who just happened to be a resident of the Coachella Valley. Completed in 1958 by developers Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers, North Shore Beach Yacht Club was one of the largest marinas in Southern California and carried a price tag of $2 million. Celebrities like The Beach Boys, Jerry Lewis, and the Marx Brothers partied there and / or docked boats at the marina.

In late February 2010, a contractor working for the Bureau of Reclamation removed the historic playground equipment (submarine jungle gym, swingset, and slide). Apparently the removal was a mistake. A historian with the Bureau of Reclamation is reviewing the incident and it is highly likely that the old playground equipment will be reconstructed here.

flickr roast for Flickr Group Roulette

...inspired by =Tom= and his 365 shot in the office...

Early in the mornings in summer, only if I go into the office by catching a ride with Gary at 7am, and only if the clouds cooperate, there's a short period of beautiful direct sunlight that flows through our office just right to create long stretches of golden light, moving quickly across the office, and then vanishing for the rest of the day.

We're on the 8th floor, with lots of windows, and the doors between rooms are all full of windows, so there's plenty of light the rest of the day, but no more direct sunlight. I don't know if this having to come into the office one day a week thing will continue after the summer, since it was put in place when our former President left, and we have a new one starting next week while I'm on vacation. If it does, I guess I can at least look forward to finding out the winter light patterns in the office.

Being there early also lets me enjoy the time in the office by myself. I have to admit, the best part of working at home is NOT having other people around. I know that makes me sound even more antisocial than I actually am, but what is it about coworkers that makes them experts in picking the. worst. time. ever. to interupt, all the time?! I'm right in the middle of a burst of enthusiasm, working diligiently at something, everything's coming together, and suddenly "Hey, Heather, how do you...?" Without fail.

(It also lets me take my self portrait without having them watching - one of them knows about the project, but I still don't like to do the photos in front of any of them.)

So, after work, we went out to pick up Rowan at camp, where the rain held out JUST long enough to see her riding demo, watch the closing ceremony, and rush to pick up her things (well, okay, not quite long enough - the skies opened on the way to get the things). Got a bajillion mosquito bites on my ankles and lower legs (and one on my face, which luckily went away overnight - it was big and ugly), went out to dinner, came home, laid on the couch and watched Legally Blonde because I'm Olympicsed-out, and went to bed at 10pm. It was glorious. But it also means I'm yet again behind as hell on Flickr, and I'm not making any promises of catching up soon, since it's too nice to sit inside on the computer while on vacation when the sun finally is out!

Tons of code to write but I've been surfing Flickr since morning! Aaaaaaargh!

Greetings and heebie-jeebies to the slworking2 group.

Abandoned Mount Laguna Air Force Station

For seven cold and tedious hours we walked the perimeter of our camp in search of any sign of Belladonna Aconite or our mysterious intruders. Keeping in touch with the others through our electro-ablative signaling pendants we made contact at hourly intervals but each three character communication was the same: "NTR" (Nothing To Report).

I found myself feeling envious of the doctor as I spied him from a distance lit by the dim glow of the Kelvinator emerging from his tent after what I hoped for him was a restful and regenerative sleep.

In a few short minutes dawn would be upon us which meant both an end to our vigil and finally departure from this dreadful place. As the first miniscule traces of the fading of night began to manifest in the east I gave the signal (via pendant) for the others to return to camp. The night had been long but uneventful; at last we could relax our guard.

With a yawn and much needed stretch I glanced over the western ridge when my eye was struck by a peculiar glow in the distance. Was it clouds high above catching the first rays of the morning sun? Some strange astronomical event in the heavens?

The rising hair on my neck and the lurching of my innards preceded my horrific realization of the truth. I shouted with all the air my lungs could manifest but the others were too distant to hear - grabbing my pendant as I made toward the camp I desperately tapped out the alert: W R A I T H S !!
