DID you ever come face to face with an angry Artichoke? Probably not, but if you do, just back away quietly. Don't get it more upset than it already is. There is a nasty Artichoke uprising in the Central Valley of California right now due to the recent drought conditions. These prickly bastards are thirsty and not in a mood to fool around.

It seems that a large group of very angry Artichokes have annexed a neighboring carrot field and are threatening the eastern part of the tomato region. So, be careful if you are traveling through the Central Valley in California. Travel Warnings are in effect.

Gotta love southern California. Less than a month and a half ago much of San Diego burned to the ground. Now, ironically, we have to worry about flash floods and mudslides!

It's a little known fact, BTW, that the number one cause of death in the desert is actually DROWNING (due to flash floods) - not heatstroke.

Ordered these off of eBay. Will be connecting them to a 4.5VDC power supply and using them in this year's Halloween display

Taking a break from assembling and setting up Sumit's new desktop system for his studio. I have been Sumit's tech support guy for the past several years. He's saved a lot of money and I've gotten a lot of free beers off him for that. For doing this setup job, he has made me the Honorary CTO of Twisted Indifference Studios. Meaning I don't get paid but have to take the blame for anything that breaks. Cool, huh?

One of the last buildings to be abandoned in the area, the North Shore Yacht club was still partially occupied when I first encountered it in 1989. Designed by renowned architect Albert Frey this was a fantastic piece of architecture and it was a shame to lose it. By the time of this shot from about 1990 the building was completely abandoned and derelict. Luckily though I've learned it was restored about 2010. Another attempt at light painting.

Dan-oh and I are still working on our light painting techniques. We need to make sure we don't appear in the shot - but I think this was a cool shot anyway.

We places our cameras on tripods, opened the shutter, and then walked around and illuminated the motel with strobes (flashes).

I learned that the motel was razed beginning on Monday of this week. Talk about timing! I wish I had taken more photos of the motel before the demolition, though. :-(

North Shore Motel

Salton Sea, California

The Salton Sea is an incongruous sight: a huge body of water in the middle of a desert. And with good reason. California's largest lake was created purely by accident in 1905 when floodwaters from the Colorado River burst past a series of dams and settled in a naturally salty depression more than 228 feet below sea level. Ever since, the lake has been a Southern California oasis, rich in wildlife. Its future, however, is in doubt.

The Salton Sea was once a popular place for boating, swimming, fishing, etc., but an increase in the salt level of the water caused large numbers of fish to die and the water became foul. This, in addition to a couple of hurricanes in the 1970's, caused the communities surrounding the sea to deteriorate.
