This is one of Gay’s many Menorahs. I shot this one on the second day of Hanukkah which happened to be the Eve of Christmas Eve as well as the secular holiday, Festivus.

Happy Holidays to all, and to all a Good Light. Slainte !

A good sign for the times.

Or as Winston Churchill put it:

"This is the lesson:

never give in, never give in,

never,

never,

never,

never

in nothing, great or small,

large or petty—

never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense".

With smiles becoming fewer and fewer these days I thought I'd share this one which greeted me in our kitchen the other morning. It will work better for you if you push back a few feet from your monitor. I hope you'll get something of a grin out of this. : ))

Be well and stay safe, friends> Slainte !

cheers,slainte,prosit,cincin,skal,

Gay's baking skills struck again, this time with homemade Mince Pies (which taste as good as they look). Truth to tell I never liked Mince Pies before now but these puppies are a whole new food group ! The difference between store bought and homemade mince meat is hard to believe. It's something like the difference between dog food and caviar. : ))

Best wishes to you all for a joyous and safe holiday season ! Slainte !

He was Banquo, Bangers, the Big Bang. I've saved the best for last. Here was a mighty hound, awarded for his beauty and perfection, work-hardened on the hill.

Beneath his bravado, wrapped in his muscle-bound frame was a confidence which gave him extraordinary grace and patience. As happens too often, lesser mortals wanted to measure themselves against his authority as first among equals. Once he was attacked by another dog, grabbed on his mighty neck by a 40kg dog. He simply braced, flicked his neck as to shoo a fly and flicked that hound over his 34" withers to land on his other side; dislodged without harm.

Remarkably, deaf to what happened, his assailant made another lunge — same outcome! Of course, my response was to ask did that just happen and why did it happen again. Three times, three times that fool tried the same tactic. Finally, bored and exasperated, Banquo simply picked up his annoyance somewhere along its back, lifted him clear of the ground, gave him a few don't argue shakes, dropped him, unharmed, and walked away. That was his temperament, his tolerance, his superpower.

Imagine my despair when I learned the advice about dirofilariasis, infection with Dirofilaria immitis or heartworm not being in the district proved to be not just incorrect but outright, plain wrong. Banquo was the first and worst of my kennel to be stricken. His might and power was robbed from him by a tiny parasite. In his prime, in midlife, he succumbed. The treatment was brutal, the side-effects and the vulnerabilities they created were too much for even this, the most perfect creature of heaven.

Two centuries ago, in October 1824, Sir Walter Scott buried his beloved Maida by the door of Abbotsford. Bangers has no statuary, no grave marker. He just left a big hole I cannot fill; even forty years on.

Raise a glass in commemoration, vale Maida, vale Banquo — gone, unforgettable. Slàinte mhath.

To you on St Patrick's Day and every day.

Apparently Guinness sells 5 and a half million pints a day and this doubles on St. Patrick's Day. That's a lot of Guinness.

Hats off to all those who do their best to slow the spread of this hateful virus. If social distancing were practiced with vigor, the results can be impressive.

Normal Behavior 1 person can infect 406 others in 1 month.

50% Less Contact 1 person can infect 15 others in 1 month.

75% Less Contact 1 person can infect 2.5 others in 1 month

The We're Here! gang is considering the water of life today.

My ancestor left Tullamore, Ireland for Canada in 1829, coincidentally, the year the distillery opened.

What better way to celebrate Pi Day than with a homemade Apple Pi ? How about some homemade Mince Pies, or a Key Lime Pi, a Chocolate Mousse Pi, a Raspberry Pi, or maybe a Pecan Pi. We've invited the neighbors over to celebrate and that's the dessert menu. Main course ? A half dozen Pizzas with all manner of toppings.

Have yourselves a great Pi Day, friends ! Slainte !

I've had the fortune (mostly good, sometimes not) to travel to many places around the world, often with camera in tow. While almost every place I've been holds something good and interesting, there are a precious few places that absolutely captivated my soul. The Connemara region of Ireland is unquestionably one of those special places for me. My family and I fulfilled a wish of many years by visiting Ireland for a splendid holiday this summer. There were so many delightful towns and villages and I could rapture on about many of them. But the most mystical place of all to me was Connemara.

This particular road is called The Sky Road. Seriously. I'm not sure if the name helped, but I loved every inch of it as it twisted around the coastal crags and farmlands. Even those where I thought for sure I would wreck the rental car in some impossibly narrow gap between a cliffside and an overgrown rock fence.

After staying for a delightful night in the incredible Abbeyglen castle hotel near the town of Clifden, I finally felt rested enough to head out in the wee hours to see if I could catch some pastoral light and magic. Now given this was a family trip and we had to cram four adults and two weeks of luggage in to a sedan, I decided I would make the family friendly sacrifice and leave behind my oversized camera gear.I wasn't sure whether it would be workable trying to capture decent landscape shots on a phone, but it didn't really matter, I just wanted to explore, breathe the soothing pre-dawn ocean air, and hopefully find some interesting views that I might return to someday. Well, the leprechauns and other long lost Celtic spirits were on my side and I was treated to a splendid light show. The image is not gallery quality, but I think it holds up shockingly well for being a handheld low light iPhone shot, and it turned out better than I could have hoped.

I have several more and I'll try to spread them out so as not to exhaust this one subject too quickly. I've much more to say about Ireland, and to our many lovely Irish hosts and other fellow travelers, Sláinte!

We got back yesterday afternoon after a wonderful few weeks at home in Ireland. Over the next few weeks I'll share some of the images from the various places we traveled while we were there which I hope you'll enjoy. Sláinte is a drinking toast commonly used in Ireland, it means to your "health". :-)

On a side note it was very interesting to be there during this historic time in Irish history. Friday 22nd of May 2015 the Irish people went to the polls and voted YES to same sex marriage. The first country in the world to do so by a popular vote, turnout was large 60% with 62% of those in favor, a solid endorsement of the constitutional amendment.

It's a staggering change in a society in just a few decades from a conservative country who decriminalized homosexuality in 1993. To the open liberal country of today but they have kept their charm, in fact for me it's added to their charm. The rainbow flag flies proud and free alongside the green white and gold.

It's a beautiful Memorial Day Monday in the Carolina's. My gratitude to the service men and women and their families who paid the ultimate price so that we can be free. We honor you and we thank you!

I've rambled a lot in this post but I've been in Ireland and I kissed the Blarney stone so I'm full of it. lol Thank you my friends it's good to be home. :-)))

If you fancy a bit of a hooley, good craic, a drink or two, great atmosphere and a sing-song, then Dublin’s Temple Bar is the place to be. Though there are, of course, countless other clubs and bars across the city all doing the same thing – so the choice is wide!

Wishing all my good Flickr Friends a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year ! Slainte !

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a shot of this tastefully decorated home. The lines from the Shaker song written by Elder Joseph Brackett and made famous by Aaron Copeland came to mind the moment I spotted this gem:

"Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free

’tis the gift to come down where you ought to be . . . . "

Happy St. Patrick's Day 08 from a small Germanic burg in Texas. So... PROST!

[Incidentally, if you encounter elephants -- green, white, pink, whatever -- I'd recommend simple courtesy, avoid eye contact, & quickly find your way to the next pub! Beer might facilitate musth. Best to avoid unless you have some degree of expertise in the area. Um, CHEERS. ;]
