An Irishman's Philosophy

In life, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you are well or you are sick.

If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,

But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will get well or you will die.

If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,

But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will go to heaven or hell.

If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.

And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends

You won’t have time to worry!

...

I wish "All of You" of "Every Faith, Colour and Creed" a very Healthy, Wealthy and Happy Holiday Season and a Peaceful New Year.

Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick"), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. In recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations for having become too commercialised and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish.

It's been a grand visit, thank you Juneau, for being your wild and beautiful self!

Our last evening in the area, we walked Sand Beach on Douglas Island, sank into beach chairs and drank a toast to a beautiful place of great natural wonder.

This is An Teallach, the ancient hearthstone mountain on which, the legends say, the Old Gods forged the Highlands of Scotland from fire and ice, back when the world was young.

In August, as dawn breaks in the Highlands and the sun rises over the horizon to the north east, for about 10 minutes it turns the mountain fire red and its easy to see why it gets its nickname, The Forge.

The photo is taken across Toll an Lochain, a small loch high up in the hills at the base of the mountain. Seeing the mountain turn blood red at sunrise is one of the most spectacular sights in Scotland and, given the poor summer we have been having this year, seeing the mountain in all its glory is a rare sight. To get this photo involved a 3 hour hike the day before up to the base of Sail Liath then a slog through peat bogs round Lochan Na Brathan and a careful climb round the rock shelves of the mountain to eventually reach Toll an Lochain (translated - the small loch of the hollow) carrying camping gear and camera kit.

Overnight camp was superb watching the Perseid meteor shower flash over the tops of the mountain, with a wee dram of 25 year old whisky to keep out the night chill. I was completely alone to watch the sun come up and set the mountain on fire. Sometimes the world is a great place. Slainte Mhath (good health).

Wide panorama of Buttermere in the Lake District, England. Fleetwith Pike is the hill on the left and Hay Stacks the hill on the right. Shot about 0500 hours as the sun rose over the Keswick Fells striking the hill tops. I love this location, what could be better - sitting watching a sunrise on the Lakes, flask of hot coffee with a nip of 15 year old Drambuie for the morning chill, packet of Jaffa Cakes and a nice cigar. Mornings just don't get much better. Slainte Mhath

Many thanks to Damien Lovegrove for sharing his method for converting digital images to B&W in Lightroom. I tried his approach on this shot which I hope you'll enjoy. Slainte !

This is a shot of Green Spring Park but it was taken in broad daylight. Being stuck inside prompted me to dig out old favorites and redo them. So the night look came from Lightroom edits (color temp, saturation, exposure, and contrast adjustments) and that beautiful sky was provided by Luminar 4's sky replacement technology. So it's not authentic, but it was fun. : ))

To get this photo involved a 3 and a half hour hike the day before up to Sail Liath (Sal Lia) one of the mountain's peaks and a careful climb round the rock shelves of the side of the mountain, avoiding the treacherous gullies, to eventually reach Toll an Lochain carrying my camping gear and camera kit.

Brian, Chief of Clan McSnail, begins his St Andrew's Day celebrations a bit early - St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and this day celebrated on November 30 is an official national day. Brian certainly looks ready to indulge in one of his favourite single malts. As you might expect, he prefers the Islay malts that are heavily peated, such as Ardbeg and Laphroaig. And he is really looking forward to dancing Strip the Hosta at the ceilidh!

In the Scots language, a slug refers to someone who drinks heavily but never appears drunk, while a spree is a noisy and boisterous drinking session.

Something completely bonkers for Macro Mondays theme 'National'.

So what could be more Scottish than a tartan kilt? Using a large magnifying glass on a stand, I managed to make a wee kilt using a small piece of tartan fabric and an iron to do the tiny pleats, rather like microsurgery. My intention had been to use my biggest snail, but it was fast 'asleep' for the winter, so I needed to very carefully cut the kilt down so it would 'fit' a smaller snail using Blu Tack to harmlessly mount it on the shell. I am clearly mad...

Slàinte mhath everyone!

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

Rows upon rows of Gueuze bottles quietly await their time at the Cantillon brewery in Brussels, Belgium.

Sweet Alyssum volunteers that sprouted from last year's seeds, seeds that washed out of the flower bed and into a hairline joint in the stone retaining wall that borders that part of the garden. Just goes to show how resolute life can be.

Natürlich ist Saint Patrick's Day auch 2022 ein Fixpunkt im Frühlingskalender und das gute Irish Stew darf dabei genau so wenig fehlen wie die schmackhaften, typisch irischen Getränke. Sláinte !

Of course, Saint Patrick's Day is also a fixed point in the spring calendar in 2022 and the good Irish stew is just as important as the tasty, typical Irish drinks. Sláinte !

This is An Teallach, shot as dawn breaks in the Highlands of Scotland.

An Teallach (pronounced An Chelluck) translates from Gaidhlig (Scots Gaelic) as 'the hearthstone of the forge', or simply The Forge. It gets its name from its sandstone which turns blood red when the first light of the dawn sun strikes the mountain in August. You have to be there to witness this, it only lasts about 15 minutes, but is one of the great sights of the Highlands. I camped out at Loch Toll an Lochan, the small loch high up in the mountains crucible just to see this sight. I rewarded myself with a wee nip of 25 year old malt whisky (just to keep out the morning chill). Slainte Mhath.

It's always fun to have family visit us in Germany and show them a slice of Bavarian life. It's also a bonus when they come up with an idea for a Macro Monday photo, thanks Claire!! Safe journey back to bonnie Scotland.

Slainte and HMM all.

Happy 10 years Macro Mondays!!

Somehow, and probably not before time, we seem to have arrived at the end of 2020. Thank you to everyone who has commented, starred and faved my humble snaps over the previous year, and apologies for my lack of response in many cases. I'm guilty of 'post and run' syndrome and often don't seem to find the time to catch up with posts, likes, and comments from the Flickrverse. I resolve to do better in that respect in the coming year! In the meantime, I wish you 'All The Best' from me for the coming year.

Traditionally I don't observe it, but with the new shoes, it hardly seems reasonable NOT to wear the green pants. Slainte!

A sunny afternoon shot of the relatively new development on the outskirts of Historic Occoquan. I labelled it "Imitation" for its developer very likely found *inspiration* for these colorful, Victorian style homes from the famous "Painted Ladies" of San Francisco. They are also known as "Postcard Row", or the "Seven Sisters." In any case they are unforgettable.

"FORTY SHADES OF GREEN" BY JOHNNY CASH.

I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea

from the fishin boats at Dingle to the shores at Dunehea

I miss the River Shannon and the folks at Skibbereen

the moorlands and meadows and their Forty Shades of Green

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town

and most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown

I long again to see and do the things we´ve done and seen

where the breeze is sweet as shalimar and there´s Forty Shades of Green

I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin´s churning suft

I long to watch the farmers drain the bogs and spade the turf

to see again the thatching of the straw the women clean

I´d walk from Cork to Larne to see those Forty Shades of Green

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town

and most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown

I long again to see and do the things we´ve done and seen

where the breeze is sweet as shalimar and there´s Forty Shades of Green

Well, just look who’s decided to adorn our festive tree this Christmas – Vincent Van Gogh, no less, sporting a splendid straw hat and a sunflower!

And on that cheerfully international note, here’s wishing all my Flickr friends, contacts, visitors and passers-by a very happy Christmas season (Vincent says 'Gelukkig kerstfeest', too); Liang and I send our warmest best wishes for the year ahead. Thanks so much for your visits, comments and favs, all of which have been greatly appreciated.

Let’s hope that 2022 is kinder to us all than the past 18 months have been. A little TLC wouldn’t go amiss, would it, and a return to something approaching normality would be even better. So… onward and upward, and here's hoping! Have a wonderful, well-deserved break, everyone!
