Liverpool September 2023

Early Unicar bodywork was never going to win first prize in a beauty contest. Couple it to a rancid pale green livery and you get one ugly motor!

The chassis is a Volvo B58 and it was new in March 1980 to Stockdale of Selby. It is seen here later in life with Skills of Nottingham, a firm who still trade today but now with a more tasteful livery.

A real kick in the teeth was all the random stuff that I couldn't get photos of for various reasons; two interesting coaches and a rail replacement being the most annoying of all. One of the few 'unscheduled' appearances I did get on camera was a more mundane affair, with mostly white Skills BV19 LNG heading towards the city centre.

The stops outside the University south entrance are National Express stops, but this is the first time I've seen NatEx coaches call at them. I was going to get photos of coaches in both directions, but some stupid van driver ruined the other one.

Tan-y-Bwlch railway station on the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway in Gwynedd, North Wales.

From 1863 until 1873, the only regular passing station for trains was at the former horse stage at Hafod y Llyn, a few hundred yards, down route, south west, from Tan-y-Bwlch. Hafod y Llyn opened for passengers on 6 January 1865 but was very difficult of access. It is just over 7 miles (11 km) from Porthmadog, and horses were changed there from 1836 to 1863 as well as at several other lineside stables. There is little to see of the location now, apart from a widening of the formation, and a gate into the woods.

Hafod y Llyn was replaced by the new station at Tan-y-Bwlch which opened in July 1873 and closed to passengers on 15 September 1939.

Passenger service to Tan-y-Bwlch was resumed on 5 April 1958, and the station was the terminus of the railway until Dduallt was reopened in 1968. However, Tan-y-Bwlch continued as the main station for the upper part of the line for years afterwards, as Dduallt had very limited facilities and no road access.

Mr and Mrs Will Jones have long been associated with Tan-y-Bwlch station. They lived in the station house from their marriage in 1929 to their retirement in 1968. In the 1930s and again in the 1950s and 1960s, the late Bessie Jones gained world-wide fame as the station-mistress wearing traditional Welsh costume and serving teas in the station house. Will Jones was a well-respected track man and passed on some of his skills to countless volunteers over the final 14 years of his employment.

.... And in with the new!!

A surprise contract win for Skills Coaches has led to their first stage carriage route in many years, Medilink!!

Starting in 2005 with just two 16 seat Mellor bodied Merc Sprinters every 30 minutes running non-stop between the two hospitals, the service has gone from strength to strength in the twenty years since.

This latest offering gives a double deck service every 15 minutes from 0600 to 2130 (there are also buses each way at 0500 and 0530 for the earlybirds) using just six buses, a massive PVR saving over all the electrics singles which were swapped over during the day.

YX75KVR is pictured out on it's first day on the road and first day of the new contract, seen climbing Linden Way in City Hospital with a Medilink to Queens Drive Park & Ride via Hucknall Road, Wilkinson Street Tram Stop and QMC.
