Sculptures on the facade
The building was designed by architect Pavel Suzor for the Russian branch of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Initially, the management of the Singer Company had ambitions to construct a skyscraper, similar to the Singer Building - company headquarters being built at that time in New York. However, the building code of Saint Peterburg center did not allow structures taller than 23.5 meters (the height of the Winter Palace - tzar's residence). The architect found an elegant solution - the seven story building featured a tower on the top crowned with a glass globe.[1] This tower makes an impression of high rise, but due to its lightness, it doesn't shadow neither the Kazan Cathedral nor the Church of the Savior on Blood. The sculptor was the Estonian Amandus Adamson.

It's really a beautiful piece of hardware... I am hoping it actually works. I am mostly wondering if this is actually rare or not... there are a few on eBay from $70 to $400 (not that I would sell this), as well as some spare parts I might have to buy.

My 1969 Singer Chamois WMV180G parked in Woodley Hill, Chesham, sometime around 1977. It had 30k miles on the clock when I bought it in 1974, and 109k by the time it 'died' in 1982.
While spending an overnight in Middleburgh, NY, I was walking around the downtown area and heard the sound of someone singing down an alley just off the main street. Upon getting to the alley, I saw this man who had a microphone attached to his boom box. His high tenor voice was magnificent. There was no one else around and he appeared to be simply enjoying singing his heart out all alone.
