Evening Overlook. © Copyright 2023 G Dan Mitchell.
Two people watching the early evening view of immense desert mountains from a high overlook.
Late in the day during my recent Death Valley visit I went to this overlook. It is more typically a place to see and photograph the sunrise, which comes from camera-left and illuminates the big ridges in the distance. But I had an evening free, not a morning, so I figured it was worth a shot. I arrived before sunset, and I made this photograph before the sun had dropped behind the western ridge, though the haze and some high clouds softened the light a bit.
I’ve never been able to quite describe what in words the experience of standing on a very high point in such a vast landscape. From here one can look 5000′ down into Death Valley or look 6000′ up toward the highest peak in the Panamint Range. One simultaneously feels “on top of the world” and very, very small in the presence of such immensity.

okay, ^o^ here is a photo taken with my favorite natural lighting condition and subject… yeah, ö_ö the precious & gorgeous golden lighting at sunrise with those translucent back-lighted wings.
Õ_õ before shooting this frame, those little egrets were flying with an incredible synchronism, together all the time, quite like an egret carrying a mirror aside; ö_ö many times they were showing off some incredible maneuvers right in front of my nose. lols… ò_ó frustrating for me, because the fact was happening at very near time of dawn and i hadn’t sufficient light to click the shutter. ó_ò hmmm… increasing iso for more than 400 would give me too much granulation in the entire composition and the use of flashlight *even with a diffuser* most probably would be disastrous. ö_ö yeah, it was hard to remember constantly that they were wild, they could get scared easily and pluff… ö_ö disappear in a blink of an eye. ~_^
ö_ö i was lucky, they came back later on and eventually, i got this shot. controlling lens flare was a bit difficult but my crew were very cooperative, they promptly answered my request of *don’t move, be quiet, no breathing and heads down* and ö_ö i could maneuver my big lens comfortably. ^o^lols

^o^rsrs...

Lake MacDonald, looking south toward the Apgar Village from Rocky Point on the north shore, Glacier National Park, Montana.
When lights are low and stars are bright, the world can appear as a whole new place, perched on the edge of something vast, primordial, and limitless in its possibility. One feels the elongation and bending nature of time, and the temptation to try and simultaneously imagine both the present and past in the same moment. My cousin-in-law and I walked out here, to the shores of Lake MacDonald late one night, as we were camping with family and extended family from Oregon. The lights come from nearby Columbia Falls, the Apgar Visitor Center and Village, and toward the right, from the bathrooms of the Fish Creek Campground. Lake MacDonald is incredibly clear and fairly cold, due to all the Northern Rockies snowmelt input, and apparently runs over 400 feet deep in the middle. It formed from both erosive and glacial action, and while very nutrient poor, it manages to support an impressive suite of native fish species, including kokanee. Looking at it under these nocturnal conditions, I nearly fancied taking a swim (REM tune full volume in my head, of course), but the memory of it being cold even in the middle of the afternoon when it had been 30 degrees warmer arrested that foolish plan and put it back where it belonged.
On the way back to camp, we heard some odd rustling and thrashing coming from the underbrush near the trail next to the lake. Turning on the headlamps to investigate, we discovered a large, and now probably blind, Western Toad individual. It was nearly as big as my hand from base of palm to tip of fingers, and I can only imagine that its hunting prowess, such as it stands, diminished severely after staring directly into twin LED beams focused right in its fully dilated eyes.
This could be almost anywhere in the West I travel. The lone tree in a field with gentle rolling hills and an endless sky is iconic to the point of cliche.
But that doesn't lessen its impact. Though it's cliche, it's not everywhere, it's not ubiquitous. You can't just drive down any road on Montana, the Dakotas or Nebraska and come across this scene.
Every time you do, however, you remember it, photograph it, imprint it on your mind and upon the dozens of other such scenes you've come across. This leads you to believe it's nearly a constant. But it's not.
It's just one of those scenes that's impossible to forget and difficult not to photography (and perhaps most important - almost impossible to screw up).
While it's not constant, it's reoccurring enough that I get a dozen or so chances to photograph such places every season. Some are successful, others less so. But it's good practice (practice for what, I'm not really sure. The next one, maybe?).
I enjoy this repetition with differences, this variations upon a theme. I absolutely love noticing the small differences contained from one stop like this to the next, and next, and next.
Sometimes I share those scenes and explain the differences, but this time, I'll just let the scene be the scene.

With the clouds pointing towards the center of the rainbow being a nice bonus. Never too much geometry! :-)
Few adjustments were needed in post to reach this result: the evening colours were really out of this world...
For those who know Kyoto, the 'tall' 'mountain' near the center is Daimonji-yama

Every so many years the lupines will bloom simultaneously into a carpet of purple. As for any wildflowers, timing is essential with peak blooms typically lasting only about a week. Leading up to the blooms I made it a point to scout out the conditions to determine when the lupines would peak.
Then it came down to a waiting game hoping for a day with clouds. With the volatile spring this year getting clouds was not much of an issue but getting the right cloud setup for sunrise/sunset light was far more challenging. Knowing the peak bloom is short, I grabbed my first light opportunity to get out here. I was pleasantly surprised to get a pretty good light show as the sky had a decent burn with textured clouds. However, it was the lupines that really shined. At peak freshness, the lupine appeared juicy and each flower stalk was tall and full of petals. I was quite relieved in getting these conditions as spring weather usually brings bluebird skies or overcast conditions, but I managed to get a solid light show right when I needed it.

A Novel by Mitsushiro Nakagawa
“Synopsis”
A Palestinian group from Gaza hacks into North Korea’s cryptocurrency system, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. Their true goal is not money—but to recreate the lost homeland of Gaza on American soil.
Amid the backdrop of hardline Republican immigration policies and a growing wave of xenophobia, a quiet plan begins to take shape: the gradual collapse of America from within.
During a speech at Madison Square Garden, Republican presidential candidate Justin Bradford is shot. Almost simultaneously in Los Angeles, former president Owen Reed is attacked at a rally for Democratic hopeful Ryan Bennett.
Two assassinations—mirroring one another—ignite a nation’s deepest divide. Yet, against all odds, Justin survives. His blood type is one in 2.5 million: the Bombay Blood Group.
The only person who can donate such blood is Anaya Patel, a community art facilitator working in Brooklyn. Her blood, stored in the Bellevue Hospital Blood Bank, is used for an emergency transfusion that saves the candidate’s life.
Jack Vance, an agent of the U.S. Secret Service, suspects a Gaza-based network behind the attacks. Together with Cameron Bartlett, the FBI Director of the Los Angeles Field Office, and Veronica Reeves, a senior investigator from New York, he begins to uncover a vast conspiracy.
Their investigation leads them to Rafi Gannam, a former architecture student at the Islamic University of Gaza, who has infiltrated redevelopment sites across Los Angeles and New York—embedding C4 explosives deep within beams and structural cores.
His targets: new residential districts where agents of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) live—symbols of “the order America built.”
Veronica urges the President to pursue dialogue to prevent further destruction, but President Grant M. Ranford refuses to listen.
Meanwhile, the recovering Justin and his Democratic rival Ryan appear on national television, calling for unity beyond political divisions.
Their words of reason, however, are drowned out when Grant takes the stage in Iowa, defiantly declaring: “We will never bow to terror.”
Among the crowd, Rafi’s operatives have already taken their positions.
As chaos erupts and the stage collapses, Amir Nasser—once Rafi’s comrade, haunted by the memory of his sister’s death in Gaza—tries desperately to halt the chain of destruction.
But Rafi’s conviction remains unshaken.
Under the twilight beneath the Williamsburg Bridge, amid the city’s fading noise, the two men part ways.
It is the boundary between prayer and vengeance, between hope and nothingness.

B♭ will be released worldwide on February 29, 2026.
Recently, director Ridley Scott remarked that streaming films and series have become dull.
I agree.
If you have two hours to spare for such stories, I ask for only two minutes of your time.
Two minutes with my novel will outlast those two hours.
I am confident of that.
Stay tuned.

Mitsushiro Nakagawa

I was introduced to stamp collecting when I was 12 or so. It interested me for a little while, but then I put it aside. Partially because of my interest then and partly because I have a son around the same age, I decided to explore it again and simultaneously introduce him to it. He's not much interested in it, which is totally understandable - he's got a TON of other interests and aptitudes - but I'm finding that I really enjoy it.
So, I spend time with photography as well as philately. Funny how things work out...
Kruispoort (Kruispoort gate)
The first Kruispoort gate was built simultaneously with the second rampart (1297-1304) and already rebuilt in 1366. Philip van Artevelde destroyed the gate when he captured the city with the Ghent militia in 1382. In 1400 the third gate was constructed. Only the two heavy towers with their narrow passage and two octagonal turrets were preserved. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Napoleon and the German army all entered Bruges through this gate.

Another view from the Rockefeller Center's "Top of the Rock" observatory deck, midtown Manhattan. This time the view is looking south toward the tip of the island with Brooklyn off in the distant left.
Serendipitously, this shot captured human beings in ambiguous positions regarding planes. Are they on the deck, reflections or images on billboards?
An underlying theme of my work is the quantum view of reality being the result of choices we make out a forest of possibilities. With my fragmenting up of the picture plane I suggest the simultaneous appearances of several realities or potentialities all at once.
Perhaps this is how we see the world initially, but our brains are designed to make the one choice and eliminate perception of the others for the sake of our safe navigation.

This is the ninth year I've shown up to photograph la traversee de Paris. Each year I've tried to find a different way to photograph the event, and each year I've tried to improve my "seeing" of this very common subject.
So, for this event I decided to try to separate automobiles from the background by using flash fill.
[Strobist Info: ALL manual setup
- 3 Yongnuo YN560 flash units
- Mounted on a cold shoe flash bracket that takes three flashes
- Triggered by a cheap RF/FM setup
- Trigger on camera
- Two receivers on two of the three flash units.
- Sony A7
- Nikon Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 Ai (old manual focus lens)
This meant I needed to set one of the flash units to "S1" - slave 1, to get all three flash to trigger simultaneously. The whole plot was put on top of a cheap flash stand that could be placed wherever I felt it should be. ]
The much longer strobist story of how I set this up, what I used, how I ended up working with it and what I'd do differently next time is found here.

I was simultaneously thrilled and astounded that the city carried on the Festival of Lights tradition. Thrilled because nothing compares to hearing wonderful Christmas instrumentals and watching the lights dance and change colors in time with the music. Astounded because, well--Covid! This "attraction" draws a crowd for the entire month, and Saturday night was no exception. We stayed long enough to see the lights in full darkness, maintaining our distance as the crowd grew, and then left. One of these years we'll see the boat parade! We did see a boat pulled by reindeer, but I couldn't get a good shot! 😁
Thanks to all for viewing, faving and/or commenting! Much appreciated! L
Happy Bench Monday!
Simultaneous arrivals are commonplace at principal rail termini, but such an occurrence was hardly expected at the remote outpost of Battersby. During the early evening of 23rd August 1988, the smartly dressed signal lady is poised to accept the single-line token from the arriving Whitby to Middlesbrough service, formed of Class 101 units 51467 - 53240, whilst arriving right on cue from Middlesbrough is the Whitby service, formed of Class 101 units 51515 - 51217. Rather sadly, the 1902-built NER Type C2b signal box was to close almost one year later, on 20th August 1989, when control was transferred to Nunthorpe signal box.

To get two splashes simultaneously I needed two hands, and so my big toe was drafted into service as the presser of the cable release. I learned that it is difficult to synchronize the motion of two hands and a leg at once, while using the remaining leg to stand.
One that got away from me due to late shutter release.

Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk
St. Mary's Church (Polish: Bazylika Mariacka), or formally the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Roman Catholic church in Gdańsk, Poland . Its construction began in 1379, or 1343 according to the official website. It is currently one of the two or three largest brick churches in the world, and one of the two or three largest north of the Alps. Between 1536 and 1572 St. Mary's Church was used for Roman Catholic and Lutheran services simultaneously. From the 16th century until 1945, when Danzig became Polish Gdańsk, it was the second largest Lutheran church in the world. Inside the church is room for 25,000 people.
The church was severely damaged late in World War II, during the storming of Danzig city by the Red Army in March 1945.
The reconstruction started shortly after the war in 1946. The roof was rebuilt in August 1947, using reinforced concrete. After the basic reconstruction was finished, the church was reconsecrated on November 17, 1955. The reconstruction and renovation of the interior is an ongoing effort.

Rare simultaneous glimpse at above and below the clouds. The thick carpet of clouds had a clearly defined border stopping just short of where I was standing, resulting in this unusual shot.
Taken from Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Standing 13,803 ft (4,207 m) above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the U.S. state of Hawaii. However, much of Mauna Kea is below sea level; when measured from its oceanic base, its height is 33,100 ft (10,100 m)—more than twice Mount Everest's base-to-peak height of 11,980 to 15,260 ft (3,650 to 4,650 m), making it the tallest mountain on Earth.

Two strange things happened simultaneously today:
1) I read that Kodak had filed for chapter 11, and
2) my oldest son asked what this roll of film was.
When trying to explain to him how the film was used, and how the cameras worked, the film was processed etc., I realised he didn't have the vocabulary to understand what I was saying.
So it dawned on me that the day Kodak died, was the day I realised my sons would probably never understand what this is and most likely never ever find this a relevant technology to use for anything.
This parent kept an attentive eye on its brood and, simultaneously, the photographer!

I’m not a hardcore birder, I shoot only when both the opportunity and mood arise simultaneously, both of which does not happen very often.
I remember feeling challenged shooting this bird and as such it was a great experience.
1. Tiny bird, smaller even than the common Kingfisher but way more colourful.
2. This being a Forest Kingfisher, it’s always in the thicket, never in the open. Had to shoot at very low shutter speed hoping to catch it in between twitches just to keep ISO low enough to preserve details. Being as dim as it was, had to also boost up the EV to avoid having to do any shadow recovery.
3. 600mm even on APS-C crop was barely sufficient.
4. Trying to squeeze out as much details as possible. Used normal wireless release via OVF; MUP+EFC; Live-view, none made any consistent and significant difference. This was where I got a little mad at Nikon’s useless implementation of EFC on the D500, even more useless than the auto AF fine-tune feature. What’s the point of putting in features that don’t really work!? EFC in Live-view would have helped but infuriatingly, you can activate EFC in Live-view yet you can’t use EFC in Live-view, get your act together Nikon!
5. Getting the right pose with the beak pointing sideways and preferably upwards for the slightly haughty look plus some catch-light in the eye.
An experience to remember. a most beautiful bird, its red feathers extend down the centre back of its head to the collar in a narrowing ridge looking like its beak with the dark blue patches on each side of this ridge giving it the appearance of having eyes and beak at the back of its head! This is likely a defensive marking. Especially interesting when the Micronesia Kingfisher became extinct in the wild due to introduced brown tree snake sneaking up on it from behind while the bird was totally focused ahead and below as kingfishers normally do.
Shooting very small birds is always challenging as conditions constantly change with the subject constantly on the move while you aim for that perfect pose which can disappear in a twitch.
I toyed with the idea of getting the Sony a99ii with A-mount Tamron 150-600mm G2 after this but gave it up eventually. It’s not feasible to shoot with so many different systems.
Shot on tripod at 1/15s!

The Vroenhoven Bridge is located a few meters from the border with the Netherlands. There is a museum underneath it, which tells the story of its wartime history, but also explains the Albert Canal, which runs underneath.
The first bridge at this location was a concrete arch bridge built during the construction of the Albert Canal in 1935. It was destroyed in 1944 by the retreating German army. A span bridge temporarily replaced this bridge until 1947, after which the bridge was rebuilt in its original form in 1947.
In 2007, construction began on the new Vroenhoven Bridge, right next to the existing old bridge. On 16 January 2009, the old bridge was blown up with dynamite and the new bridge was put into service in June 2010. The replacement of the bridge widened the bottleneck of the canal, so that two ships can now pass simultaneously. This widening was not previously possible because the piers of the old bridge were too close to each other.
The construction of the new bridge also includes space for a museum – the Vroenhoven Bridge, an open-air theatre, a climbing wall and a café-restaurant.
The history is also dominated by the battle for the bridge during the Second World War. This bridge was captured intact by German troops during the invasion of 10 May 1940. A dozen Belgian soldiers were killed in the bunker near the bridge. A day later, seven Belgian airmen were killed during their attacks on the bridges of Vroenhoven and Veldwezelt, shot down by German anti-aircraft guns.
Main Street in the Heartland of America – But what year is this ? - At first glance this could have been back in the mid-1960s, but in reality this scene is from July 3rd, 2016 where in Viroqua, Wisconsin a pair of classic Chevys are heading to a Holiday weekend car show. – This is one of those shots where everything came together quickly and unexpectedly. – While setting up to shoot the Sun and shadows on the old buildings, these two vintage cars rolled into the frame simultaneously and at the same exact moment that two other “modern” vehicles completely cleared out of the view. – A simple and less than spectacular image, but one of those magic photographic moments that I will always remember. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
The Autrique House, Victor Horta's first building of note, is of major importance in the architectural heritage of Brussels.
The Maison Autrique is the very first striking building Victor Horta designed. It was built in 1893 and is as such a major part of Brussels' architectural heritage. The house marks an essential stage in the development of the greatest of Belgian architects and provides a better understanding of the birth of Art Nouveau. The scenography designed by Schuiten and Peeters makes this residence - as it once was - an outstanding house, simultaneously a tribute to the private architecture of Brussels and a gateway to an imaginary world.

Did you know? Most aurora borealis occur between 90 and 130 km above our heads. The Northern and Southern Lights dance simultaneously and are almost mirror images of each other.
The way the aurora works is a lot like a neon sign, except that in the aurora, the conducting gas is in the upper layer of the atmosphere, instead of a glass tube, and the current circulates along magnetic field lines instead of copper wires.

The day consist of an exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and colleagues. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion – "a rose for love and a book forever." In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is also customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616.
