Red Legged Partridge - Alectoris Rufa aka French Partridge
The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a gamebird in the pheasant family.
It is sometimes known as French partridge, to distinguish it from the English or grey partridge.
This partridge breeds naturally in southwestern Europe (France, Iberia and northwest Italy). It has become naturalised in flat areas of England and Wales, where it was introduced as a game species, and has been seen breeding as far north as Cumbria and eastern Yorkshire and the western Isle of Man. It is replaced in southeastern Europe by the very similar rock partridge (Alectoris graeca). It is a non-migratory terrestrial species, which forms flocks outside the breeding season.
This species breeds on dry lowlands, such as farmland and open stony areas, laying its eggs in a ground nest.
The natural range of the red-legged partridge is France, Spain and Portugal. However, it was introduced from France to Great Britain in the 18th century, and has since become an important gamebird there. As it is a mediterranean species, it thrives in hot, dry areas with sandy soil. The ability to breed two clutches simultaneously has led to it being extensively reared in captivity, and released for shooting. The breeding of chukars (Alectoris chukar) and red-legged/chukar hybrids is prohibited, due to its impact on wild populations of red-legs. The red-legged partridge is believed to be in decline across its range.

The Church of the Nativity of Christ in the refectory chambers of the New Jerusalem Monastery was built simultaneously with the three vast chambers themselves in 1686-1692. By order of Princess Tatyana Mikhailovna, who donated money for the construction, each of the three chambers of the refectory served its purpose. Thus, the middle "meal", connected to the Nativity Church, was intended for all pilgrims who arrived at the monastery, the second - for the brethren's meals, and the third, apparently, more ceremonial, "a living room for worldly food of all ranks to people."
The Christmas refectory church was made two-story, with the second floor communicating with the chambers. Its architecture is typical of the late 17th century - in the Moscow Baroque style. The lower floor - the "warm" church - was originally surrounded by an open porch, which in the 18th century was replaced by an arcade that has survived to this day, decorated with classic rustic woodwork and pilasters.
The upper, "summer" church is in two tiers of windows, covered with a closed vault, on which there are two octagonal with a dome. The entire decor of the temple: architraves, columns on the apse, octagons under the cupola, are made in the Moscow Baroque style. Not only the church is decorated in the same way, but all the refectory chambers.
In 1792, a hundred years after its construction, the refectory chambers were badly damaged by a fire in the monastery kitchen. All the chambers were burnt out, and the church utensils were barely saved, while much was still damaged by fire. After renovation, in 1810, a wooden ceiling was made in the upper part of the Nativity Church, supported by two brick pillars. This greatly reduced the space of the large baroque temple and made it much darker. Therefore, already in the 1850s. this "innovation" was removed and the restoration was carried out under the direction of the architect K.A. Ton.
The luxurious tyablo iconostasis of the Nativity Church was burned down in 1922. Museum expositions were housed in the premises of the temple. During the colossal destruction of the monastery by the Nazis in 1941. The Nativity Church was almost not damaged, and during the restoration the original appearance of the interior of the church and the refectory chambers was restored.
In 1995, the Church of the Nativity of Christ was transferred to the newly formed monastic brethren; in 1996, restoration work began there, and in 1997 the church was re-consecrated.
Now the temple is a very interesting picture - it is practically side by side adjacent to the museum remaining in the refectory chambers, and the visitor may well seem at first to be an exhibition hall as well. Only by looking more attentively, one can notice that there is no longer museum life going on here.

This is one of my last shots from my short trip to the Allgäu Alps and simultaneously one of my favourites. The sunrise above the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. It was a very moving moment as the sun was rising behind me and the mountains were starting to glow. It was more than worth to stay up at 4 o’clock and to clamber up a ski slope to witness this. Some times ego I shot the same scenery at sunset and I'm impressed how much the different light is changing the mood.

During the rut, we often hear the incredible, otherworldly sound of a bull elk bugling. But just how are they making that noise?
Until recently, scientists were stumped — the bugles reach pitches that are far too high to be produced by an elk’s voice box. It turns out there are two forces at work.
Use your binoculars to take a look at a bugling male – you’ll see that he is moving both his lips and his nostrils. That’s right: he’s roaring and whistling simultaneously.
And there......you’ve got the famous elk bugle.
We happened upon this handsome fella in early hours of daylight in Grand Teton National Park. He treated us to his bugle in the chilly morning air....

Deutscher Dom | German Cathedral #3
Explored July 20, 2020
Oh dear, I realise that this last part (for now) of my mini series of the German Cathedral was due two Sunday's ago. So I better upload it today so as to not keep you waiting for another week (and also to open the way for some new captures which I took this week at the "cube berlin"). I do have more captures taken inside the German Cathedral, and also at the Gendarmenmarkt, and will post them peu à peu. But for now, this is the last one.
This is another kaleidoscoped Sunday slide (and please check out the fourth comment – I was too slow with posting the photo link –, because last year I had already posted a slide of an image taken during that visit at the German Cathedral's highest point : right under the cupola). The title came to my mind not only because of the rather obvious "vertigo"-inducing height of the tower, and the fact that this is a duplicated / mirrored / flipped-and-combined version of the tower, but it's also derived from the fact that back in the day the two buildings adjacent to the German and the French Cathedral were both used as churches. The "New Church" of the German Cathedral was used as a "Simultaneum", a double church for Calvinists and Lutherans, and the French Cathedral was a church for the, also Protestant, Hugenot immigrants to Prussia. The "kaleidoscoping" was easy here; I copied the original capture to a new layer in Photoshop, mirrored it, duplicated the canvas, combinded both the original and the mirrored image, and then, in Lightroom, rotated the final image to the right. I think the final result looks very natural, almost as if the building had been constructed that way and not the result of a composite done in PS.
I hope that the French Cathedral, which also houses the "Hugenot Museum", will be opened again for visitors soon. It's under renovation since 2017; it will be interesting to compare the German and French Cathedrals' interiors; as I've mentioned earlier, the German Cathedral's interior was reconstructed in a modern way – lots of raw concrete as you can see above and also in my previous picture from the series –, while I assume that the French Cathedral's interior will be reconstructed true to the original (here's a link that will take you to the French Cathedral's website where you can check out a few interior captures – unfortunately very small, but you can see the difference: www.franzoesischer-dom.de/pages/start/de/franzoesischer-d...).
Happy Sliders Sunday Everyone, have a safe and healthy week ahead!

Blossoms are produced in spring simultaneously with the budding of the leaves and are produced on spurs and some long shoots. The 3 to 4 cm (1 to 1 1⁄2 in) flowers are white with a pink tinge that gradually fades, five petaled, with an inflorescence consisting of a cyme with 4–6 flowers. The central flower of the inflorescence is called the "king bloom"; it opens first and can develop a larger fruit.

A large, dark grayish brown kiwi with brownish streaking, often showing white patches on face. Restricted to native forest near Okarito in New Zealand, with small populations on predator-free Mana, Blumine, and Motuara islands. Often heard at night foraging as it sniffs loudly, tapping the ground for invertebrates. Male call is a series of clear rising whistles. Female call is a harsh throaty wail. Both sexes repeat their call many times, and sometimes call simultaneously. Could be confused with Weka by voice and shape; look for the kiwi’s much longer bill and lack of tail, and listen for its multisyllabic call. (eBird)
---------------
On the ferry to Blumine Island were two conservation officers who were taking two kiwis to a nearby island for release into the wild. During the trip, they brought out one of the kiwis and showed the fascinated passengers how the birds were banded and tagged with electronic trackers. The kiwi wasn't really impressed by all this handling, but the bander knew what she was doing and the job was quickly done. Before returning him to his travel box, the conservation officer showed him off to the enthralled passengers, most of whom had probably never seen a kiwi close up and in the daylight. I was absolutely thrilled!
A few days later, we heard a female calling at a mainland location, but did not see her so this was the only sighting that we had.

Zubizuri, also known as the Campo de Volantín pedestrian bridge, although popularly called Calatrava bridge, is an arch bridge (whose track hangs from it) over the Nervión estuary, in the Basque city of Bilbao, in northern Spain. It joins Campo de Volantín (Castaños), on the right bank, with Uribitarte (El Ensanche), on the left.
It was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, who also led the Bilbao Airport renovation project. Work began in 1990 and it was inaugurated on May 30, 1997.
The design consists of an inclined arch that joins two platforms, with access ramps and stairs on both sides, which supports the pedestrian structure with iron cables. The entire bridge is painted white, as is common among Calatrava structures.
Since its inauguration, almost simultaneous with that of the Guggenheim Museum, the Zubizuri was a symbol of the new Bilbao, constituting another tourist element of the Ria promenade. It is a common walk for guests of Campo de Volantín hotels before arriving at the aforementioned museum.
The modern double helix staircase, commonly referred to as the "Bramante Staircase", was designed by Giuseppe Momo, sculpted by Antonio Maraini and realized by the Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry in 1932 and was inspired by the original Bramante Staircase (from 1505 A.D.)
This design allows visitors to ascend and descend simultaneously without crossing paths, as the staircase spirals upward in a double helix formation. The term "double helix" refers to the two intertwined helical structures, reminiscent of the double helix shape of a DNA molecule.

If sometimes you have no idea what kind of photo I am going to post, it's probably because I also have no idea what photo I am going to post, either. I usually decide about 15 seconds beforehand unless there's a birthday or Caturday post. Anyway, this was a reflection of the outside steps along the ceiling of the top floor of the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and I thought ok I like that and can also relate to that. I feel like I don't post photos of my home city of Chicago as often as I should, either.
So...what does it actually mean to be defined by diagonals? There's an element of unpredictability here and perhaps of choice paralysis too....you are constantly caught between two simultaneous directions given the illusion of a shorter distance between points but only if you are brave enough to take it and can survive. So, you may end up feeling trapped with an illusion that you should be feeling more motivated with a clear direction.

After watching this two slightly immature eagles fight over this stump space I think I can say that, like the quantum mechanical Pauli exclusion principle, this proves that two eagles cannot occupy the same space on a stump simultaneously. Of course this violates the Schrodinger's cat thought experiment that tries to illustrate the absurdity of applying quantum theory to the macro-physical world, but hey, even that appears to be in question these days...

"The California Nebula is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is named for its resemblance to the shape of the state of California in the United States. Here is an overview of its key characteristics:
Distance and Size: The California Nebula is approximately 1,000 light-years away from Earth and spans around 100 light-years in length. It appears large in the sky, with an angular size of around 2.5 degrees, which is about five times the width of the full moon.
Composition and Color: The nebula is predominantly composed of hydrogen gas, and its striking red color is due to the ionization of hydrogen atoms. This ionization occurs when ultraviolet light from nearby stars excites the hydrogen gas, causing it to emit a characteristic red glow.
Exciting Star: The main source of ionization for the California Nebula is the bright, hot star Xi Persei (or Menkib), a massive O-type star. The ultraviolet radiation from this star plays a significant role in energizing the surrounding gas.
Visibility: Despite its large size, the California Nebula is relatively faint and difficult to observe with the naked eye. It is best viewed with long-exposure astrophotography or through wide-field telescopes equipped with hydrogen-alpha filters, which enhance the nebula's emission."

Today, I edited some of the abstract images I took last year, where I rotate and zoom simultaneously while taking a longer exposure of our Rudbeckia. I’ve already done this before and it’s just so much fun that I do it every year. Since you can never be sure what comes out, I took a lot of such images, where I liked this one the most, even though it’s less regular compared my previous ones. Hope you like it too! :)
I must admit to becoming quite addicted to this technique. I tilt the camera and shoot the silhouette. Then leaving the shutter open, I ask the model to switch on the torch and I simultaneously pan the camera across the frame. For this one I used a full frame 12mm fisheye lens making use of the aperture ring. The line created looks better if you can reduce the aperture to let less light on to the sensor.
The first posted image of 2019. January 1.
After a string of very ornate work I thought it would be a refreshing thing to start the new year off with a straight out of the camera, pano-sabotage shot. There was no processing used other than standard tweaks to clarify and sharpen the image, take out excess white glare and bump up the saturation a bit.
The brightly coloured planes to the right of the image are not the result of filters or effects, post capture. The older buildings to the left are contrasted by another that is covered with long strips of highly irridescent metal that shift colour as you move around the structure. Hence the striking colour facets in the image to the right.
Pano-Sabotage, or more simply, "Pano", is a unique photographic practice that undermines, or sabotages the iPhone's camera Pano function. By deliberately moving the camera in a wide variety of motions OFF the guiding line that is meant to ensure a seamless panoramic image, the camera is "constantly trying to find North", as Tim Noonan once put it, and so is desperately trying to record what it sees as "up". The many "ups", tumbling against each other, is what results.

In the late 19th century there was a lot of philosophical, spiritual and mathematic talk about the 4th dimension. This ferment of ideas, super potent and conceptually rich, made their way to one Pablo Picasso. The mathematical theories of Henri Poincaré, the poetic writings of Guillaume Appolinaire, two widely divergent thinkers, both influenced Picasso. He struggled with the ideas artistically, shutting himself away in the Bateau Lavoir until he gave birth to the painting that altered the course of Art, "Les Demoiselles D'Avignon". In it he finally realized how, on a 2 dimensional plane, to visually convey what a fourth dimensional image would show ... all angles of an object as seen simultaneously. The Analytical Cubist vision, then, asks the VERY potent question ... does anything, ultimately, have a defining, absolute shape ?
Albert Einstein, at the same time, also influenced by Poincaré, was asking strikingly similar questions about assumed absolutes, leading him, of course, to his theories of relativity.
Pano-Sabotage ( Pano ) seems to echo this view and offers, perhaps, through a new technology, another way to render, or at least strongly point to, the 4th dimension.

"The Flaming Star Nebula and the Tadpole Nebula offer a unique glimpse into the processes of star formation and the dynamics of interstellar matter.
Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405)
General Overview The Flaming Star Nebula, also known as IC 405, is an emission/reflection nebula located in the constellation Auriga. It is about 1,500 light years away from Earth. This nebula is illuminated by the bright star AE Aurigae, which is a runaway star, believed to have been ejected from the Trapezium Cluster in the Orion Nebula after a close encounter with other stars.
Key Features
Star AE Aurigae: Central to the nebula’s visibility, AE Aurigae is a massive, young, and hot O-type star whose high-energy light excites the surrounding gas, causing it to glow with a characteristic blue hue in photographs.
Emission and Reflection Regions: The Flaming Star Nebula exhibits both emission and reflection characteristics. The red areas signify emission from hydrogen gas excited by the star's ultraviolet radiation, while the blue regions show light from AE Aurigae reflected off dust particles.
Molecular Clouds: Surrounding the nebula are dense molecular clouds, rich in material that may eventually form new stars, indicating ongoing stellar formation activity.
Tadpole Nebula (IC 410)
General Overview The Tadpole Nebula, known as IC 410, is an emission nebula located about 12,000 light years away in the constellation Auriga. It is notably near the Flaming Star Nebula but is distinguished by its larger and more diffuse appearance, as well as its intriguing internal structures shaped like tadpoles.
Key Features
The Tadpoles: Inside the nebula are two large, elongated structures that resemble tadpoles. These are thought to be formed by the wind from the young massive stars in the region sculpting the denser parts of the surrounding molecular cloud.
Star Cluster NGC 1893: At the heart of IC 410 is the young cluster NGC 1893, which is responsible for ionizing the gas of the nebula. This cluster contains several hot, young stars whose intense radiation shapes and illuminates the nebula.
Emission Characteristics: Like the Flaming Star Nebula, IC 410 primarily emits light due to the excitation of hydrogen gas by the ultraviolet radiation from its young stars.
Scientific Significance Both nebulae are subjects of ongoing astrophysical research. They are especially valuable for studying the effects of high-energy stars on their environments, the processes of star formation, and the dynamics within active stellar nurseries. Observations and studies of these nebulae help astronomers understand more about the lifecycle of stars and the evolution of galaxies."

When I was 12 years old, in 2009, I became simultaneously obsessed with celestial patterns and circuses.
The celestial pattern obsession came from the school counselor, whose room was decked out with sun and moon decor, and felt like going to another realm more than any room I'd ever entered before. I painted my room dark blue and orange accordingly.
The circus obsession came soon thereafter, during a series of yard-sale runs where I found a painting of a clown, as well as some clown figurines. I thought that they were well-suited to my my celestial room, and brought them home. I began having visions of sad clowns and apocalyptic circus scenarios. I spent the next 6 years with a clown portrait above my bed that frightened most of my friends.
I love celestial patterns more than ever now, and the circus continues to haunt me (but not enough to disincentivize me from researching it). Something about the late 1800s-early 1900s give me Big Spooks. But if you Know, then you Know the Big Spooks are potent sources of creative potential.

Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, Canada.
Thank you so much for your comments; they are always greatly appreciated.
What attracts me most to this wonderful Point Pelee National Park is the diversity of birds that gather there simultaneously in a fantastic environment. What bothers me most is the presence of dogs, even on leashes. Please understand, I love dogs; I've had dogs almost all my life, and my wife and I gladly walk our neighbors' dog when we go for walks in our neighborhood. It's just that during migration, the park is overrun with birdwatchers and amateur photographers, all with the same goal: to find birds to observe and photograph. But then along come hikers, probably locals, with their dogs, which are, in principle, predators, at least from the birds' point of view, as they tolerate their presence very poorly. I believe that during this peak season, which is the park's primary purpose, walkers with dogs should be restricted to certain trails, just as cyclists are. This is only my opinion; after all, thousands of birdwatchers visit this National Park to observe the birds and contribute significantly to the region's economic growth during this time.
Dense fog distorts my senses in a way that is simultaneously disconcerting yet thrilling. The liminal quality of spaces such as this scene is overwhelmingly immersive. I feel so much more than indifferent observer. Images such as this exist only because I involve myself in the space, become a part of it, and quite literally allow it envelop me.
One of my many fascinations with fog is the sense that clarity exists only within arm's reach. It's the same way my mind perceives life when I'm dreaming. The entire world surrounds me, but it becomes progressively murky as it recedes in distance. I behold only what my mind prioritizes even while I have peripheral awareness of my surroundings. Likewise, fog has the effect of cordoning me into a small space even when I am outdoors in the middle of a large expanse such as stubble field. I desperately want to enter that nebulous threshold where the trees vanish into the fog, but it's an unapproachable boundary. It exists visually, but its not a physical space. I live for visual contradictions such as this.
"To take photographs means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis."
-Henri Cartier-Bresson

An piece in the ongoing project which uses extreme panoramic scanning to produce imagery that proposes mulit-directional simultaneity. Here 3 different directions, Left to Right, East, South and West appear to be one direction.
Formally, it's all about using the frame and the iPhone camera to create abstract composition. Light, direction, hierarchy in traditional senses are brought into a single view that relies on the sublimation of these as distinct qualities.
A fun way to see things.

Two celestial events occurred simultaneously, a supermoon and a lunar eclipse. The last time this happened was in 1982. The next time this will happen will be 2033. Roughly 10 minutes between each shot with less during eclipse phase.
The red moon is possible because while the moon is in total shadow, some light from the sun passes through Earth’s atmosphere and is bent toward the moon. While other colors in the spectrum are blocked and scattered by Earth’s atmosphere, red light tends to make it through easier.
