Designed in the spirit of The Sea Ranch’s original architectural vision, the house uses unpainted wood siding to age gracefully with the elements. The geometry is clean and deliberate—two asymmetric roof planes meeting in a central ridge that balances openness with protection from coastal winds. A gravel path and unmanicured native grasses reinforce the ideal of living lightly on the land, where boundaries blur between architecture and environment.
Set against a backdrop of forest and ocean air, the house’s restraint becomes its beauty. The proportions, materials, and siting echo the work of designers like Charles Moore and William Turnbull Jr., who helped define The Sea Ranch ethos in the 1960s. This residence feels both timeless and deeply local—a quiet conversation between structure, texture, and terrain.

John and I spent endless hours in his small cabin hiding from the November rain as he revieled the secrets of wet-plate to me. Not only was I thankful for the private wet-plate education, but also for having the time to get to know John as the real, and interesting man that he is. This image was made after a long conversation about the wet-plate images and education of Sally Mann........that is a story for another time.
I added some color to this plate by adding some powdered pigment before varnishing.

This is the Commissary at 1180 Amphibious Dr on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach, VA.
Commissaries (on-base grocery stores) are ran by the Defense Commissary Agency (DECA) which is headquartered on Fort Lee, Virginia.
This particular Commissary has an older aesthetic and design package that I find to be gorgeous.

When I first moved into the cabin in May of 2008 I was loaned/given a little kitchen table which, while very functional, didn't really fit. It was in great shape, like new really, but was an 80's style particle board deal that just didn't feel right. I finally got around to making the table that I thought would fit better and I'm pretty happy with it. It is very simple, made of weathered wood from free pallets we picked up this past spring. The old wood and cedar branch legs are a much better fit for the cabin. I had enough wood left over to build a rustic end cabinet between the door and sink as well as a few wall shelves. I've still got a few details to finish but they are mostly done and very functional. I've still got gobs of wood left so I'm thinking about how I might put it to use.

Downsizing is the new catch word, especially since the recession is hitting most people in the pocket where it hurts; from large corporations to the individual consumer, we are forced to downsize and live simpler lives. this is the reality today in middle-class America and across the globe. On the flip side of that same coin is over consumerism. Which is one of the main cause of the economic crisis we find our selves in, including the other crisis global warming. Many of the world's problems are cause by greed and over consumption, especially in the develop countries where the media pushes this like a drug. Now the cake has hit the fan and we all have to try and live simpler lives and consume less because we have no choice but to do so. We will now have to make an extra effort to live simpler lives if we want to survive the future.

The Pa'O, Shan, is the seventh largest ethnic nationality in Burma with a population of approximately 600,000-1,800,000.
The Pa'O people are the second largest ethnic group in Shan State. They also reside in Kayin State, Kayah State, Mon State and Bago Division. They are believed to be of Tibeto-Burman lineage and may also share the language and culture of the Karen people.
Many of the Pa'O have fled to Mae Hong Son Province in northern Thailand due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. They are composed of two distinct groups: The Lowland Pa'O, based in Thaton, and The Highland Pa'O, based in Taunggyi. It is believed that there are as many as twenty-four Pa'O subgroups.
