Another from my Monument Valley series:
I was fortunate to be able to hire a guide to show me some of the more sacred, non-public areas of Monument Valley. My guide and his sister are only one of nine families that live on the reservation (inside Monument Valley).
My guide is on the left, with his sister on the right. She provided a weaving demonstration from raw cotton and explained the heritage of the Navajo ways and what the Hogan (pronounced Ho-ghan) stands for in the culture. This panorama shows the interior of her Hogan.
From left-to-right:
- Far left: we arrived just after sunrise, so you can see the sun coming through the door. The door faces east so that the first thing that a Navajo family sees in the morning is the rising sun and its blessings.
- Left: Guide stands in front of the wood-burning stove. This was quite comfortable on a 27-degree morning. You can see some daylight coming from the center-hole in the roof.
- Center: you can see her display of arts and crafts she sells, including jewelry and quilted/woven pieces.
- Right: She explains the tools and techniques she uses to create her crafts and continue the tradition that has been passed to her. This Hogan was originally built for her grandmother, who lived to be 115 years old.

Great emotions of children, happy mother, burst of snow in the air. Incredible snowfalls in mid March besides creating lots of troubles became great fun for children.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

we saw: need for speed. NYC messenger movie from early 90's. everyone was in brightly colored spandex and the girl messenger i swear was madonna in her early years.

© 2006 Phillip Nesmith - This is one of the 5x7 wet-plate ferrotypes (tintype) that I made while spending a few one-on-one days with John Coffer. The image on this plate shows John standing on the porch of his handbuilt cabin on his small farm near the village of Dundee New York.
John and I spent endless hours in his small cabin hiding from the November rain as he revieled the secrets of wet-plate to me. Not only was I thankful for the private wet-plate education, but also for having the time to get to know John as the real, and interesting man that he is. This image was made after a long conversation about the wet-plate images and education of Sally Mann........that is a story for another time.
I added some color to this plate by adding some powdered pigment before varnishing.
