The church Frauenkirche in the Frauen alley 3 in the town of Baden in Lower Austria is first mentioned in the 13th century in a charter of the monastery of Heiligenkreuz (also in Lower Austria) as St. Mary's Church in Baden.
1285 gave Leutold of Chreusbach and his wife Offemia with their children the Church of Our Lady and the adjoining court to the Augustinian Hermits.
Church and Monastery at the time of the conversion of Duke Frederick Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), Elector of Saxony, to the Catholic faith played an important role: here he converted secretly on June 1, 1697, to become king of Poland.
1811/12 followed the final dissolution of the monastery when the number of stuff declined to four priests and three lay brothers. The Baden city fire of 1812 caused extensive damage to the buildings. 1818 acquired Joseph Friedrich Freiherr von Haan (1777-1834) the ruins of the church and convent, had both of them renewed (the monastery of Joseph Kornhäusel) and sold the property(s) 1826 to the seasonally resident in Baden Emperor Francis I (see also Imperial house, Main square 17). In 1827 the church was re-consecrated and in 1828 declared to Court church (Hofkirche). 1917-18 the church as such under Emperor Karl I. again came into operation, in 1919 it was as Frauenkirche the parish of St. Stephan as daughter church incorporated.
The originally Baroque hall church under half-hipped-roof was restored in 1825-26 in classicist forms. The placed in front of the adjacent walls, in core Baroque low double tower façade is integrated into the enclosed development of Frauen alley. The classicist two-zone west facade with plaster ashlar stone and scratching, probably by Joseph Kornhäusel (renovated in 1924 and 1934). Between eaves-equal towers, each with hailstones-studded (gaupenbesetzten) mansard roofs above circumferential eaves cornice (Traufgesims), there is a shallow, flat gable-topped central projection. The rectangular portal with even roofing above volute brackets a high arched window in rectangular plaster framing and indented balustrade is superposed.
