Daytime portrait of the historic Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior's North Shore about 40 miles northeast of Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Funds for the light station were appropriated by Congress in 1907 at the bidding of U.S. Steel Corp. and other iron ore interests after a November 1905 storm on Lake Superior damaged 29 ships (a third of which were uninsured and owned by U.S. Steel).

The station was opened in 1910 and was decommissioned in 1969 during the era when technology was making lighthouses obsolete. The State of Minnesota has had the site since 1971, and in 1976 it turned operations of the light station over to the Minnesota Historical Society. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2011.

A menacing and sinister looking cloud sat over an apartment building on the far bank of the reservoir. As it churned and blustered it reminded me of my high school English class in Shakespeare. How it too would carry on in some indignant way that would have no effect.

"The May Full Moon is known as Flower Moon to signify the flowers that bloom during this month. Other names for the Full Moon in May are Corn Planting Moon, and Milk Moon from Old English/Anglo-Saxon."

"The Moon (or Luna) is the Earth’s only natural satellite and was formed 4.6 billion years ago around some 30–50 million years after the formation of the solar system. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth meaning the same side is always facing the Earth. The first unmanned mission to the Moon was in 1959 by the Soviet Lunar Program with the first manned landing being Apollo 11 in 1969."

Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland

These hardy creatures are found roaming all over Achill and are found in some pretty inaccessible places being almost as agile as goats.

They have these colour markings on the wool to signify that the sheep is part of a particular farmer's flock given that they are grazed on the commons which is nearly the whole island (even the local golf course!).

They are also pretty fearless and don't even blink at passing cars while resting on the side of the road. I am so used to slowing right down for sheep at home, it took a while to get used to seeing passing cars speeding past (or being in one!).

Also, given their ubiquity on the island, there is a bit of a need to tread carefully when walking across grassy meadows and fields!

According to what I was told, their wool is almost of no value but their meat is.

This is third third in the series that I am posting from my landscape photography workshop on Achill.

Autumn Begins...

The first signs of fall, begin with the changing of the leaves, the sudden burst of color that signifies the end of summer. The transition to fall and the onset of winter.

This maple tree was already yellow; losing its leaves to the winds that jostled its branches... The brilliant sun shone through the top its branches setting it ablaze with colour.

Photo of the Hongwangi Temple in the Tsukiji area of Tokyo on a cloudy morning.

Infomation:

Tsukiji Hongwanji is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha denomination, also known as Shin Buddhism, which was founded by the monk Shinran (1173-1263) and whose head temple is Hongwanji (Nishi Hongwanji) in Kyoto. The temple was first built near Asakusa, but was burnt down in a fire in 1657 and rebuilt at its current location in 1679. At that time, the area where the temple stands now was the sea. Temple followers and others implemented a land reclamation project and rebuilt the temple on the new land. In 1923, the temple was again destroyed by fire caused by the Great Kanto earthquake, and, in 1934, the current Hondo (main worship hall) was rebuilt according to a design by renowned architect Ito Chuta. In 2014, the temple’s main worship hall, gate posts (Main gate, North gate, and South gate), and stone walls were designated as National Important Cultural Properties. “Tsukiji” means “reclaimed land” and signifies the origins of the site on which the temple stands.

Contemplation is also the response to a call: a call from Him Who has no voice, and yet Who speaks in everything that is, and Who, most of all, speaks in the depths of our own being: for we ourselves are words of His. But we are words that are meant to respond to Him, to answer to Him, to echo Him, and even in some way to contain Him and signify Him. Contemplation is this echo. It is a deep resonance in the inmost center of our spirit in which our very life loses its separate voice and re-sounds with the majesty and the mercy of the Hidden and Living One. He answers Himself in us and this answer is divine life, divine creativity, making all things new. We ourselves become His echo and His answer. It is as if in creating us God asked a question, and in awakening us to contemplation He answered the question, so that the contemplative is at the same time, question and answer.

Akron is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Greek word ἄκρον signifying a summit or high point. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Akron is located in the town of Newstead on the west and north slopes of a hill. NY 93 passes through the village.

The village absorbed the community of Fallkirk in its growth. In 1880, the population of Akron was about 1,050. It was then an important cement-producing center, due to local deposits of gypsum. Besides production of cement, the village also produced cigars.

Butterflies and death 👐

Many people believe that butterflies are messengers sent by loved ones who have died. There are many cultures that ascribe meanings to specific interactions with butterflies as well as the meaning of colors and their messages to those grieving.

♥♥♥ Orange Butterfly ♥♥♥

If you see an orange butterfly soon after your loved one passes, then you've just received a vital message of love. The orange butterfly is believed to carry the message that there is life after death and that death is but a transformation like that of the butterfly.

For this week’s Macro Mondays ‘Souvenir’ theme, I have chosen to photograph a Swarovski Crystal Hedgehog; a souvenir from a trip to Austria (a few years ago now) where their headquarters are located.

From Crystal Fanatics: The (Swarovski) Block SC Logo was originally used on the Silver Crystal product line. The Block logo is the letter C with the letter S inside the C; it was used from 1976 to 1988. The logo signifies authenticity and tells you the piece was produced during those particular years.

A simple set up this week after the headache of last weeks shot: one Bowens studio strobe, with the light directed on to the crystal Hedgehog. Post processing in Photoshop and Lightroom CC as usual.

Tree Trunk

in dreams...

"To see the trunk of a tree, signifies your inner sense of well being and personality. If the trunk is thick and large, then it denotes that you are a strong, rugged and durable person."

Binx and I have been friends since Year 9... we had a little band together - she played the drums and I sang (karaoke styles :o), eventually the band disbanded on the account of us "growing up" and all that serious stuff...

I'm finally on holidays guys... YAY!!! WHOOOOO!!! Binx drove me all the way to uni to drop off my last essay and then we walked around and took photos...

This is inspired from a recurring dream I have had for the past week or so.... Not quite sure if it signifies anything very consequential though :-)

Four of Hearts meaning . Four of hearts signifies discontent and frictions in a relationship. It means that you should voice your concerns and try to work them out. It is a positive sign, because this is the only way to make progress. The four of hearts reminds us that love is not granted forever after.

Windmills have been a feature of Brill since at least the 13th century. Two fields adjacent to the Thame road are named Milldene and Millpiece, signifying connections with the earliest siting of windmills in Brill around 1250.

The present windmill on Brill Common was probably erected sometime in the 1680s. Although not quite the oldest windmill in England, it is one of the best preserved of the dozen or so 17th century 'post-mills' still standing. (Pitstone Windmill, also in Buckinghamshire, was built in 1627 and is believed to be the oldest windmill in Britain.) A post-mill is a mill in which the whole structure revolves around a central post in order to face the wind.

When Brill windmill last operated it was working two sets of stones; a pair of French burr stones for milling wheat, and a pair of peak stones (Derbyshire millstone grit) for milling barley. When operative, the mill had four sails, each 27 feet (9m) long and 5 feet (1.5m) wide. Since construction, the mill has probably been operated by only six millers.

Brill's last miller was Mr. Albert Nixey. Mr. Nixey last milled flour in 1919, but continued to grind barley for cattle food for a further four years. The new roller mills (the first opening in Glasgow in 1872) could produce 7,000lbs (about 3,200kgs) of bread flour per man hour, compared to 180lbs (81kgs) produced by a windmill such as that in Brill.

In 1634, another post-mill was built opposite today's windmill, on the other side of the road across the Common. This windmill, known as Parson's Mill, was struck by lightening in 1905 and demolished in 1906. The 'tump' on which it was built is still clearly visible.

In Greek mythology, the heron is associated with Poseidon and is seen as a good omen. European and African traditions make it a symbol of indiscretion and misplaced curiosity “which sticks its beak everywhere”. More positively, it signifies vigilance.

Happy American Thanksgiving!

It is a day to set judgements aside, put battles on hold and come together in unity to focus on things for which you are grateful.

A beautiful start to a summer dawn across a New Forest heath. Just past the full moon. We seem to derive a lot of names for the moon from the native American nomenclature and June's moon is no different, signifying berries coming into harvest. Other European names I saw included, honey moon, mead moon or rose moon. June's moon is lower in the sky and can therefore look a litlle rose tinted as there is more atmosphere for it to go through. The slight pre-dawn magenta sky helped to give that impression here.

Tulips (Tulipa - means perfect love) signifies the arrival of spring.

Bluff Cove

Palos Verdes Estates, CA

After a gloomy morning, and a quick welcome rain (it hadn't rained this Christmas and for me that's one of the things which signifies the season) I drove out around the peninsula and ended up at Bluff Cove for the sunset.

Creeping front on Norfolk Island signifies the eventual arrival of Category 2 Cyclone Gabrielle. Subsequent days meant some buffeting and rains but little damage on the historic small island. The cyclone eased into a tropical low as it passed southeast to New Zealand but there caused massive flooding damage. Cyclones are unpredictable even after downgrading.

Lavender signifies Summer to me. Here it comes.

Nestled in the tranquility of New England’s charm and grace, lies Old Wethersfield in Connecticut USA. Its rustic abundance of rich history can be found within colonial dwellings signifying traditions and a culture that seemingly is forgotten in the busy world immersed nearby.

Once a thriving shipping commerce, Wethersfield Cove is connected by the Folly Brook before finding its way to the Connecticut River. Lumber, grain, meats including fish and vegetables were traded to the Caribbean in exchange for sugar, molasses and rum.

The shipping trade has now been replaced with the occasional offshore mooring of boats for pleasure and relaxation.

I’m posting this image in memory of a friendship that has waxed, waned and now has fallen into silence. Life is about change, transition and finding one’s own path; very much like photography.

Thank you for all your kind, loving comments, favs and words of inspiration. They are very much like a great picture. So much can be said with so little. Greetings to those of aspiration.

For many, 2020 signifies a year to forget. On the Metro-North roster, 2020 was a memorable unit, the FL9 with the gold patina on its nose. Here it's mated to sister unit 2007 with northbound train 845 at Breakneck Ridge, a location just north of Cold Spring that's memorable in its own right and never seems to get old, in this case at 6:10 pm on 18 June 1987.

This shot was taken a few days after the first bloom of cherry blossoms (Sakura) in Tokyo.

The appearance of Sakura signifies the beginning of spring. The arrival of these flowers is an annual event so significant, that there are forecasts pinpointing exactly when and where the flowers are expected to bloom. Tokyo is always bustling with outdoor activities and festivals during this festive period. The main activity is usually Hanami (花見), which often refers to Sakura flower viewing. Group of friends/families often sit on the picnic mats, enjoying foods and drinks while indulging the beauty of Sakura.
