The concept of "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning" first appears in the Bible in the book of Matthew. It is an old weather saying often used at sunrise and sunset to signify the changing sky and was originally known to help the shepherds prepare for the next day's weather.
Despite there being global variations in this saying such as "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors warning", the scientific understanding behind such occurrences remains the same.
Why does a red sky appear at sunrise and sunset? The saying is most reliable when weather systems predominantly come from the west as they do in the UK. "Red sky at night, shepherds delight" can often be proven true, since red sky at night means fair weather is generally headed towards you.
A red sky appears when dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by high pressure. This scatters blue light leaving only red light to give the sky its notable appearance.
A red sky at sunset means high pressure is moving in from the west, so therefore the next day will usually be dry and pleasant. "Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning" means a red sky appears due to the high-pressure weather system having already moved east meaning the good weather has passed, most likely making way for a wet and windy low-pressure system.

It was a delight watching this fledgling Burrowing Owl as he climbed out of the underground burrow and investigated the surrounding area.
The Burrowing Owl is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America.
Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other open dry area with low vegetation. They nest and roost in burrows, such as those excavated by prairie dogs.
They are small, sandy colored owls with bright-yellow eyes. They live underground in burrows they’ve dug themselves or taken over from a prairie dog, ground squirrel, or tortoise.
They live in grasslands, deserts, and other open habitats, where they hunt mainly insects and rodents.
Before laying eggs, Burrowing Owls carpet the entrances to their homes with animal dung, which attracts dung beetles and other insects that the owls then catch and eat. They may also collect bottle caps, metal foil, cigarette butts, paper scraps, and other bits of trash at the entrance, possibly signifying that the burrow is occupied.
Burrowing Owls have a higher tolerance for carbon dioxide than other birds—an adaptation found in other burrowing animals, which spend long periods underground, where the gas can accumulate to higher levels than found above ground.
Unlike most owls in which the female is larger than the male, the sexes of the Burrowing Owl are the same size.
Burrowing Owls often stow extra food to ensure an adequate supply during incubation and brooding. When food is plentiful, the birds' underground larders can reach prodigious sizes.
The oldest known Burrowing Owl was at least 9 years, 11 months old when it was sighted in California in 2014.

According to the theory or lore, mainly black "woolly bear" worms predict a harsher winter. A mostly brown worm signifies a milder winter. If brown at the head with more black near the tail, it means a winter that starts mild and ends harshly. After having a good look at this fuzzy woolly worm while was sleeping, I noted that he/she had a big brown band on the middle. So according with this weather worm, we're going to have a moderate winter in Pennsylvania. This worm is the caterpillar of the Isabella tiger moth and good that it wasn't a bear that I found! 😊

While walking along a scenic seaside trail it came to an end with signs signifying that this area ahead of me was a migratory bird sanctuary/breeding area and human presence was prohibited along with threats of severe fines for violation. I was disappointed for otherwise I had my eyes set on those dunes up ahead for getting shots and respecting the purpose of the area and also not wanting risked getting severe fines as I saw park rangers knocking about in the area I just took this shot from the sanctuary's edge.

In Valencia, the Fallas season has started again Like shown here in 2018. The ninot sculpture-groups are being placed and every day there are fireworks.
The Fallera has pagan origins (celebrating the beginning of spring). Later, wood shavings became giant sculptures (ninots) and were used to portray the ’shame of the neighbourhood in the early years of the Fallera. They now portray ’the shame of the media’ - dignitaries and/or figures of authority are ridiculed. Fairy tale characters and ones from the gaming world are used to contextualize. The end of the festival is the ‘crema’ - where the ninots are burned. It signifies the burning of memories or incidents that collectively must be forgotten.
The festival was banned during the Civil War. And it’s back in full force for decades now and is still satirical, sometimes sexist, and now also reflects global events and popular mass culture. Behind the production of the ninots are large community groups (every Valencian quarter has a few - the two people in interaction, clad in grey and right in front of the sculpture group are members). After the placement and the arranging of the ninots (cranes are often involved) sometimes the last phase of production is handled on-site - the actual painting of the ninots.

Bill King is not just an exceptional piano player. He is most known for starting Beaches Jazz Festival, which attracts over 1 million attendees every year. Bill King led it since 1989 and up to 2019. He is also an excellent photographer and documented Toronto Jazz for last 40 years. There are many layers to this man and his involvement in the city musical scene is unparallel.
The photo was taken at singer Debbie Fleming 80th birthday in the elegant Jazz Bistro. The stellar band of Toronto finest consisted of Colleen Allen, David Johannesson, Bill King, Russ Boswell and Ted Quinlan.

I took this shot a couple of years ago in Oregon. It was just off the beach and was very windy, as you can see from the tree. What really touched me was the three people on the right...the way they were hanging onto each other. To me it signified a very close bond.
For the Saturday challenge "Over-processed clouds"
Clouds are a big part of every day here ... the skies are huge and dominate everything. You can tell the weather by the clouds, as well as being mystified and delighted by effects you haven't seen before. We enjoy sunrise in the front garden, and sunset in the back garden .. so I often grab a camera to catch a cloud effect before it passes. My latest obsession is lenticular clouds, which I've seen for years, but never knew their name or what they might signify. So I took this recent evening shot with the setting sun and lenticular clouds as my choice for this challenge. Then I decided to play with the colours of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) in Photoshop.

Water is the Essence of Life. No living thing can survive very long without it. It is incredibly old. We have the same rain as the ancients did and before their existence. It signifies the power to purify, to give deliverance, and it can also destroy evil and enemies in flood as in the Biblical stories. It is awesome as it is kind. It is benign, it is malignant, for we live or die without it. What a miraculous thing it is, it can engulf you but you cannot hold it in the palm of your hand. It can scold you, it can freeze you, it can inspire and frighten in the very next breath. I will always respect it in its many forms.

The name "5 Pointz" signifies the five boroughs coming together as one, but, because of its reputation as an epicenter of the graffiti scene, the industrial complex has united aerosol artists from across the world as well.
The 5 Pointz building was demolished completely in 2014.
Besides standing stones there are several smaller stone circles around the moor as well.dating back to before the Pyramids. We loved Arran Island. There is great mystery surrounding them , how they got there and what they signified and how they were used, although most certainly for ritual and religious ceremony.

Whites Castle tower house was built in 1417 in County Kildare by Sir John Talbot, Viceroy of Ireland, to protect the Cromaboo Bridge over the River Barrow and the inhabitants of the Pale. On the right of the doorway is the Earl of Kildare's coat of arms, signifying the Earl's ownership of the castle in former days. It is now a private residence.

Under a still glum sky I went to the nature reserve De Hoge Dijk between Amsterdam and Abcoude for a breather. Soon I found myself (and Olymp) in De Ruige Hof (=rough garden), a nicely maintained ecological park with lots of ditches and canals. A bit a spring green here and there; even some early wildflowers.
Here's Lungwort, Pulmonaria officinalis. It is said - from the Middle Ages onward - that those white spots on the foliage signify the Virgin's tears on Good Friday... Lungwort flourishes in the weeks around Easter.
Sunsets have much meaning. They signify endings, change, and transformation and remind us that change is part of life and everything has an end.

These disheveled trees reminded me of the pictures (is.gd/TseCqF) of Bernie Sanders with unkempt hair. As a lighthearted homage to Bernie's campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination of its 2016 US Presidential candidate, I tagged the pictures of these trees as "FeelTheBern," the hash tag that signifies the movement that the campaign inspired.

Some of you may have heard of the famous Cape Breton Celtic band called the Barra MacNeils without knowing what the name actually signifies. Historically the MacNeil’s were the chief clan of the Isle of Barra a Western Scottish Island that saw a lot of its population immigrate to other British colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries including PEI. St. Patrick's the grand dame captured here is a far cry from the log structure that the first 20+ families from Barra erected here in 1790, it also has the distinction of being the first church in Canada to be dedicated to St Patrick.
