Plymouth's Valiant began as a pseudo sub-brand, "Valiant," without any Plymouth badges in 1960. Chrysler's main entry into the compact class, the Valiant evolved into a more conventional car for 1964, and this generation lasted three years. It also spawned the Barracuda fastback.
The Valiant Signet was a conventionally-styled hardtop and convertible which ran alongside the Barracuda and pre-dated it. Introduced in the fall of 1963, the Signet had several months of sales prior to the introduction of the Barracuda on April 1, 1964. As a result, the 1964 Signet outsold the Barracuda.
But the fastback fish quickly overtook the Signet and for 1965 outsold the notchback and convertible by 6 to 1.
1966 brought a more conservative facelift for all Valiants, and was the final year for the original Signet concept. The car pictured here is one of 13,045 Signets produced for '66.
In 1967, the Valiant was redesigned and the Signet became the top trim level, but no longer a unique hardtop or convertible.
