Digital or Analog Signals
A country can be destroyed or sustained by signals. Targeted signals are aimed horizontally from the ground as well as vertically from the sky.

Wherever we go, the snow finds us.
Many years ago, we lived on Cape Cod, where they said "It never snows but when it does, it's all gone the next day". The year we moved to Mashpee, they were printing (joke, it's a flat island) SKI CAPE COD T-shirts.
When we moved to Grand Junction (Colorado), they said "It snows a little sometimes, but it all melts the next day". Well, it snowed, and it stayed all winter.
Now we're in New Mexico. The second storm started Thursday, and the weather reports are calling for it to end Sunday. The biggest snowstorm ever in Albuquerque, they say.
The current conditions:
- 17" of snow on the ground here and it's still coming down.
- Interstate Route 40 is closed from Albuquerque to Texas, and from Albuquerque to Grants.
- I-25 is closed from Albuquerque to Colorado.
- Route 66 is also closed, so we're not going anywhere. We live only 8 miles from the city, but we have no way to get there unless we walk.
Starting to feel like the Snow God here - maybe I can rent myself out to the ski areas?

This post is obviously attached to a traffic signal, for instance, and you can tell that much without ever raising your gaze from the ground. What color is the light right now? Step into the street and find out! If you hear a horn honking or suddenly get run over, you'll know the light is not presently in your favor. Live and learn!
Compass Railtours "Fylde Coast Express' 1Z43 0518 Kilmarnock - Blackpool North hauled by Stanier 'Black 5' No. 44932 hurries along the Fylde Coast mainline at Salwick on 22nd May 2013. On the right are sidings (presently unused I think) for the Springfield nuclear manufacturing plant. Although carrying a plate above the signal box door that it is 'Salwick No. 3', it is now of course the only one at the location. It is the fringe box to Preston and one of six along the line to Blackpool North. Steam working specifically and railtours in general to Blackpool are now quite rare due in the main to lack of paths on the busy Fylde Coast Line. The added complication for steam workings is that the locomotive has to work to Lostock Junction to turn, a manoeuvre of around 60 miles. This old signal is in Terre Haute, IN. is now out of service. I believe this protected the former crossing of New York Central and the Milwaukee Road. The line is currently used by a local grain elevator with a SW1.

This is the signal conditioner board. I made this PCB by hand since it's really simple. I soldered the components as if they were surface-mount type.

Instead of sending twitter updates (the XPort shield is rather expensive) it will show the status on an LCD display and/or a computer screen running Processing.

Signal Box Ruislip Underground Station (Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines), 13 April 2024. Built in 1904 by the Harrow & Uxbridge Railway. Of course, it is not in use anymore but looked in very good condition.

Why does a funicular railway need signals when it consists of two cars connected by a cable? The signals display red/green aspects based on whether the doors of the cars are open/closed. I'm not certain why this is necessary, as I would imagine there is some failsafe to prevent the system from starting when the doors of one car are still open.
Green-red: The doors of one car are closed, presumably those of the left-hand car (with respect to when they pass each other) on the cable.
A selection of semaphore signal arms make a colourful sight, stored in a veteran goods van at the Mangapps Railway Museum. The museum has many superb displays of small exhibits, and the undercover storage and display space for its vintage rolling stock has been vastly increased in recent years.

The tea towel is to prevent the sweat from the hands of the signal man pitting and corroding the metal on the levers. They are extremely hard to move. The "straight arm" technique is preferred, and moving it half way, and then completeing the movement is recommended. As well as controlling the signals, the levers also do the points. Arley staton on the Severn Valley Railway, Worcestershire. The station was used as the setting for the fictitious station of Hatley in the BBC sitcom Oh Doctor Beeching!

Washington Ave/Linderman Ave 4-Way with 2 older LFE signals, 1 70's Marbelite and 1 original Marbelite signal. I've noticed this signal while heading to work that the LED's were very bright so I walked to and found that signal got a much needed upgrade with those Econolite plastic visors. Only the eastbound LFE on Washington Ave have original visors.
