Faversham station under going re-signalling with the erection of a new signal gantry.

The work is part of the proposed multi-million pound East Kent Resignalling Project.

The advance work, involving cable diversions and earth works, are all part of a plan which ultimately could see the end of existing mechanical signalling equipment dating back to the 1950s. The equipment, which includes mechanically operated signalboxes, would be replaced with a modern computerised system, controlled from a signalling centre at Gillingham.

Faversham is significant as it sits at a junction that splits into two routes, one of which will be used by the new Class 395 Hitachi-built trains.

In one direction the line from London via Rochester continues on the north Kent route to Ramsgate and Margate, whilst the other line leads to Dover Priory via Canterbury East – an area where there are still clusters of semaphore signals.

CSX's GMS-1 "Spirit of R.F. Silbaugh" splits the classic L&N searchlight signals at Flanagan Station south of Winchester, KY.

I spent the morning here, hoping to catch CSX's Office Car train passing these signals instead...but the geometry car will have to do.

According to the April 1965 B&O Railroad timetable for the Ohio-Newark Division/Cincinnati Terminal Sub-Division; Mr. R. F. Silbaugh was Assistant Division Engineer.

The car is a Plasser American geometry car, used to test aspects of the rails on the railroad.

69th was the biggest battalion in the entire US Army - about 3000 men, which would normally be Brigade strength. The Badge on left is the 69th Unit Insignia "voix de commande"; the ribbon in middle is the Meritorious Unit Commendation, which was presented to the 69th while I was there by the Secretary of the Army, and the insignia and shoulder patch of the 1st Signal Brigade. The 1st Signal Brigade is currently stationed in Korea.

The 69th Signal Battalion was in Germany until 2014, when it was deactivated..

The arm of Uttoxeter Down Home 1 signal, worked by lever No.2.

An LMS lattice post signal, originally installed in the 1930's it carried four arms as Uttoxeter West Down Starter with Pinfold Crossing distant beneath - the arms had co-actors at the bottom of the post because of the station footbridge.

A 'shunt ahead' arm was added beneath the bottom distant following removal of the Churnet Valley junction in 1968.

From 1973 it became Pinfold Crossing home signal and then the new Uttoxeter down home from 1981.

Alas, it met its end in November 2007 - however all is not lost as it was recovered and is now Rothley Up Home signal - also controlled by lever No.2...

The new home signal installed by ARTC at Botany. It authorises entry to the Port Botany terminal complex. The main signal is fixed at red, authority to enter the terminal is given by a subsidiary shunt signal (small yellow).

Although located in coastal Sydney, the signals at Botany are now controlled from the country town of Junee, about 480 km or 300 miles away by rail!

Weaverthorpe Signal Box was built in 1873 and is a rather odd looking building. It is located 4 or 5 miles from Weaverthorpe itself and is located on the York - Scarborough line between Malton and Seamer. The gates also seen in the photo are still worked by a wheel mechanism located inside the box. It has a frame of 16 levers dating from 1933 and the box is now a listed structure.

It is also a good location for photos:

Dating from 1907 the signal box Rosyth Dock was opened when some land was reclaimed and rails were laid from Queensferry Junction to service HM Dockyard, Rosyth. The rails are still in situ but if the points are required they will be operated by a train shunter.

This signal arm is genuine, but the rest - post, control rods and all - are a purely a decorative construct. The "signal" stands on the National Cycle Route 647 close to Fledborough Railway viaduct in Nottinghamshire. The cycle path follows the track bed of the former railway line across the River Trent at Fledborough (closed in the early 1980s), hence the signal.

Signal box diagram. Photo circa 1989.

The last box we visited on our trip round the North Lincolnshire signal boxes was Barnetby East, possibly one of the most recognisable signal boxes in the UK due to the popularity of the station with railway enthusiasts and its appearance in so many photographs.

A lovely box and a very friendly signaller, Jim, who moved to Broomfleet on the Hull line and worked next door to me!
