What we see here in the photos is not just a British Benzol forecourt—interesting as that is anyway—but one which reveals something else about the company's history: the Hickey logo on the shop-front (see photo below). This was a Hickey site incorporated into the growing British Benzol business in the late 80s or early 90s. Hickey were based at Harefield Oil Terminal near Uxbridge, with a few sites to the north and west of London. This (on the A10) and one on the A40 in Buckinghamshire might have been the highest-profile ones.
British Benzol had a complicated history that I haven't quite got to the bottom of yet. It was an old-established coal distillation, mining, and coke producing company, originally based at Bedwas colliery in south Wales, and presumably supplying benzole to petrol companies, but I don't think selling it under their own name.
But by the mid-80s as the mining business declined, they branched out into lubricants and liquid fuels. British Benzol plc bought JC Abbott of Barnsley, who then became the retail petrol and lubricants arm of the company. The initial British Benzol petrol stations were I think company owned, larger sites. They only had 10. In 1987 British Benzol was reversed into by Powerscreen, a company making mobile mining/quarrying screening equipment, and pretty quickly the petrol / oil business was sold off and the company became Powerscreen International plc.
I don't know the sequence of exactly what happened at this point but the British Benzol fuels business, combined with the businesses of Hickey, and Pronto Heating Oils (based on the Uxbridge Road not far from Hickey's base), re-emerged, based at Harefield Oil Terminal (the former Hickey site), run by Dennis Woods who built it into quite a large oil (and fuel card) business, although with relatively few petrol stations, and mostly quite small dealers.
Note here also that the left-hand pump has a (very faded / washed out) newer British Benzol sticker, with the 'spike' logo.
I often see cute or funny sayings on church signs but I had never seen this one before!

West Allis shakes off longtime pizza parlor
Local Shakey’s had survived franchisers’ earlier struggles

Shakey’s Pizza and Buffet, one of only three remaining east of the Rocky Mountains, will close on Monday, June 30, after 37 years in West Allis.
Until now, the restaurant at 9638 W. National Ave., the last of six that once operated in Wisconsin, had survived a decadelong downturn in the franchised name brand. But its owners recently “decided to focus on other business interests,” according to a news release.
The chain began in Sacramento, Calif., in 1954 when Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson and Ed Plummer opened a parlor in a remodeled grocery store. They served beer and pizza and provided jazz band entertainment that eventually evolved into banjo and piano sing-alongs with words projected onto a screen.
Long wooden tables with stools and an open kitchen were the hallmarks of a family-style atmosphere that led to Shakey’s expanding throughout the country in the 1970s.
The chain modified its concept in the 1980s and early 1990s to include buffet lines that included the traditional pizza, chicken and “MoJo” potatoes but also a variety of other foods and a salad bar.
The parent company of Shakey’s struggled under frequent ownership changes, and franchises began closing their restaurants in the mid- to late-1990s.
After the local restaurant closes, only two stores (both in Georgia) on this side of the Continental Divide will remain in operation. There are about 50 on the West Coast.

Mas não vou abandonar a comunidade nem o flickr, sei que vou ficar com a mão coçando e com o coração doendo de ver tanta coisa linda, mas vou me segurar e esperar até ter o MEU DINHEIRO e comprar tudo o que quizer (ou puder).
Quero a ajuda de vocês nessa missão, não me deixem compraaaar!

I hear that they have the best food in the area. Unfortunately they were not open the day I was there, nor did they have their sign on. The sign does work, based on what I have seen from other flickr users.
I came across a lot of prints that I took back in the 80's when I would drive around Dallas on weekends taking photos of any and everything. I thought I'd share them with you before I pack them back away and let them collect dust for another 20 years!
I know that this motel is still around, but I haven't been back by in years. I'd like to take a few "then and now" photos the next time I'm in town to see how/if the place has changed much in the last 20 years.
i guess since we live near odin avenue that it only makes sense that there's a malamute avenue nearby. however, i suspect though that the odds of us finding another snowdeal lane outside of maine are slim to none.
and slim is out of town.
I love vintage signs and was pleased to see that there are "old sign" groups on Flickr. I just spent most of the day driving the Kansas City area taking photos I plan to post over the next few weeks. I'm starting with White Haven Motor Lodge on Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas because I pass it quite often doing business and just getting around town. The White Haven was a state of the art motel from the 1950s when Metcalf Avenue was also Highway US69 and a primary north-south commercial drag through the southern Kansas City suburbs. It is still an active business, more because of nostalgia and because it remains in a proximity to enough traffic. The signage is very typical of the 1950s and 1960s.
