This old building wall sign represents a way of advertising back in the day. The village of Waterloo found this hidden treasure, an antique advertising wall sign, when the building next to it ( the Dempsey Building ) fell into such disrepair that it had to be demolished in 2007. When that building came down, they were surprised to find this wonderful historical treasure which has been hidden for so long. Now, a little bit of history: Apparently Mr. Dempey owned a wholesale and retail business in this building ( 37 Virginia Street ). He decided at the time to take the advertising offer of the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company to advertise his wines and liquors on this wall along with their Mail Pouch Tobacco and Chew. The tobacco package was designed to look like the old pouches carried by the Pony Express. This sign in one of a few still found in the northeast. In the 1920s they could be found as far east as Ohio and usually in rural areas on barns and along main highways. Waterloo's treasure is one of the few village signs. It was preserved when the Dempsey Building was added in 1896. It is located at the corner of Virginia Street with a little park in front it , in Waterloo,NY
In February 2009, while covering a surf rowing event at Trigg Beach, I photographed a rower from Secret Harbour SLSC who sported some interesting tattooed symbols on his back. Fast forward to July 2010, and this fella, by name of Pughey, rocks up to the studio to participate in the shoot for the "Gun's Up!" book project!
As it turns out, the symbols are the zodiac signs (horoscopes) of his family members (kids and wife). The Capricorn is his zodiac sign.
"All Memorex Air Duster products contain a bitterant to help discourage inhalant abuse."
"Intentional misuse by deliberately inhaling contents may be FATAL."
Not that these signs are the most interesting in themselves, but the fact that they were in a row fascinated me. Also, the one in the front reminds me of "The Flintstones" and the one in the back reminds me of "The Jetsons" So I'm figuring 50's hotels????
This was taken in Merced, CA
On October 7, 2013 about 80 people joined in AFSC’s monthly vigil at the GEO run ICE immigration detention facility. Three families, each affected in different ways shared their sadness, frustration and gratitude with those gathered. Jeanette Vizguerra, having once been detained there, shared her gratitude for community support and diligence. Silvia, her son currently detained in the facility, shared her sadness at being brutally separated from him. And Genevieve, her step father currently detained there, for over 11 months, waiting to receive news regarding his U Visa application, shared her frustration at the lack of humanity in the prolonged wait. Those present included Regis University, University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University students, trying to make sense of our broken immigration system. They joined in as clergy, Rev. Anne Dunlap, led prayer with the community.
SPENCER: Does anyone have a grumbly tummy? It's lunchtime! We have a choice from different delicious-smelling restaurants with pretty signs. I like the teapot sign and the bicycle sign! The one with colourful flowerpots on its stairs is pretty too! And I'm sure the food is delicious in all of them, because it sure smells great. There's this mouth-watering smell of delicious food cooking, and also the smell of cooking on wood fire. Where do you want to eat? I would like to try them all! *Rubs his tummy.*
They are signed and after performances they are taken outside by the dancers in hopes that someone who likes a particular dancer will buy one to help support ABT.

An image to conjure up thoughts of all the fun of the seaside complete with piers, amusement arcades and fish and chips. Here we see the sign above Felixstowe Pier's main entrance as photographed in May 2013.
New road signs have been introduced in the Netherlands since mid-2012 with a white border near the edge of the signs to make them better visible for color blind people.
