I tried several version of this. This one was the best and I liked the way the night sky was lit up in my front yard. I loved the stars and the shadows that the tree gave off. This photo has many neat characteristics to it, which is why I choose it. I like how the pink of my shirt stands out and how the beginning and end both have a bright light on the grass. This is the original photo that has had nothing done to it!
Ok so here is how i did it....
Setup:
ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/200 1/250
F stop: 5, 4, 8, 11
I used a large piece of black material for the backdrop - but I realise now that I should have used a piece of cardboard so that there wouldnt be any creases.
I used a plamp (plant clamp) to secure the incense - but blutac or an incense holder would also have worked.
I also had a black piece of paper under the incense to catch the ash that fell off. And being black, it would not reflect any unwanted light.
Lighting:
I had a desk lamp on the right hand side lighting up the smoke(not from directly to the right but more ilke a 45 degree angle between the incense and the background.
I had the camera on a tripod with an SB 600 on top - in most tutorials they have the flash on the opposite side to the lamp, because the flash will light up the background if fired from straight forward.
Extra:
After I setup the camera on the tripod I used a remote to trigger the shutter, this was a good thing to do becuase you can just sit back and click when you think there is good smoke.
Focusing: I focused on the incense stick, then moved the camera upwards slowly.
I will post another picture on how to photoshop the image
