A STUNNING SHORT-EARED OWL POSING ON THE NORTH -EAST COAST THIS PM

As I was putting my camera away before catching the tram, I looked up and saw this lady watching me out of a tram window.

I lifted my camera, pressed the shutter… and her tram moved on….

Thanks to all who comment or mark as a favorite it really is much appreciated.

Short eared owl flying back and forth above marsh suddenly dives down to catch a vole.

These highly maneuverable raptors make frequent hard turns while scanning for prey. This is a relatively easy adjustment, but you can see how the right wing and tail are tilted together to catch the wind and push it to the left.

Short Eared Owls are often found in groups. Some took off the moment they noticed me but this one kept a watchful eye.

Quite a lot of distant action from the female of a well-monitored pair on Sheriffmuir this morning. The male is satellite tagged and the analysis has shown that he has mainly been hunting at night and, at the time of peak provisioning, was hunting less than 100 m form the nest showing how plentiful voles have been this season.

Late afternoon shot as the owl was hunting.

Thank you for your likes and comments very much appreciated

I was very fortunate to see this owl hunt, capture, and mantle his prey!

This open-country hunter is one of the world's most widely distributed owls, and among the most frequently seen in daylight. Don't look too eagerly for the ear tufts, which are so short they're often invisible. More conspicuous features are its black-rimmed yellow eyes staring out from a pale facial disk. These birds course silently over grasslands on broad, rounded wings, especially at dawn and dusk. They use acute hearing to hunt small mammals and birds.

Will really miss these birds when they are gone

Short-eared Owl Gloucestershire UK

Its long bill is short only in comparison with the very similar Long-billed Dowitcher. This one looks like a non-breeding adult.
