This extinct bear was larger than any of the present=day North American bears; a foot taller than the grizzly and about twice its weight. This animal had a massive skull, a short snout and long legs. It probably ate more meat than do modern bears.
The skeleton behind the bear is that of an extinct Western Horse.

This little perennial succulent exists in only 5 known populations. After several good spring rains they pop up out of the sand in tiny bunches. Luckily, some of the known populations are now protected in permanent open space parks around coastal San Diego.
