Binnenschifffahrt ist die überwiegend berufliche/unternehmerische Schifffahrt auf Binnengewässern und Binnenwasserstraßen, also auf Flüssen, Kanälen und Seen im Bereich des Güter- und Personentransports.
Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) is een internationale rederij die gespecialiseerd is in containertransport. Het Italiaanse bedrijf is in 1970 opgericht en is sinds begin 2022 de grootste containerrederij ter wereld. Voor het containervervoer per spoor is vervoerder Medway opgericht, dat onderdeel is van rederij MSC. Terwijl Medway in onder andere Italië en Spanje al op het spoor opereert, werd in België, Nederland en Duitsland jarenlang Crossrail ingehuurd voor het rijden van treinen.
In de zomer van 2022 kwam daar een eind aan, toen Medway Belgium werd opgericht. Sindsdien rijdt Medway zelf de containershuttles tussen Antwerpen en Neuss, Germersheim en Wörth. Gelukkig bracht Medway een TRAXX-locomotief in de gele huisstijl: de 186 224. Daarnaast kwam ook de 186 227 in opvallend outfit de baan op: It's A Match - DVA & Alpha Trains. Het maakt de treinen van Medway tot een gewild jachtobject.
Net als bij voorganger Crossrail rijdt ook Medway de vijf keer per week rijdende containertrein Antwerpen - Neuss v.v. als transittrein door Nederland. Er wordt standaard via Roosendaal en Venlo gereden, bij werkzaamheden wordt uitgeweken naar de grensovergang Emmerich. Er is geen vaste omloop voor de leukere Medway locomotieven. De trein náár Neuss rijdt in de avonduren en met dank aan de railcam bij Helmond kon op 13 februari dan ook de gele 186 224 worden gespot op weg naar Neuss.
En dus was het zaak op de zonnige 14 februari naar het zuiden af te zakken, om een poging te gaan doen deze nieuwe vervoerder met bijpassende locomotief vast te leggen. Even leek het erop dat de trein niet zou rijden - dat gebeurt meestal 1x per week wel - maar uiteindelijk vertrok de trein alsnog uit Neuss via Krefeld naar Viersen. Omdat de trein flink te laat was, werd het mogelijk de trein in Duitsland al vast te leggen. Bij Dülken zien we de 186 224 met een goed beladen trein passeren op weg naar Venlo. Hierna werd meteen de achtervolging ingezet en kon de droomplaat in Griendtsveen gemaakt worden.
Cosco Shipping Galaxy arrived at Felixstowe on Feb 27th from Singapore, her next Port of call will be Zeebrugge. Galaxy is due to depart Felixstowe at 19,15 on March 1st 2023.
MSC Sveva arrived at 07.30 March 1st from Antwerp.
A location I have not visited for well over a year; I like to get these ships so close to the camera, and it is a place I shall return to often hopefully.
Obviously the giant ships which we see on the Mersey now cannot access this canal, but ships of the size of this one depicted enter the ship canal from our great river, so I have opportunities in at least two places to capture these hard working vessels.
This image reminds me of being a young boy and listening to the shipping forecast... imagining all the places through the radio waves- Cromarty Dogger Fitzroy Forties German Bight... so evocative even now
I was chasing the moon again trying to shoot it with something interesting. It appeared between two ships at one point.

On this morning, there was a very low tide. I walked to the end of the jetty on the right side and decided I would climb to the top to take a couple of pics from there. I got about 3/4 of the way up before I slipped and fell. I rolled down the rocks back to the sand. I think every inch of my body hit a rock. I hurt pretty badly. I slowly got up and hobbled my way back to my car. Over the next couple of days, my body tuned black and blue and I was very sore. Four days later I finally went to urgent care where I found out I had cracked a rib. Well, I got a few pictures and my camera never left my hand. My body will heal but a broken camera would have hurt worse. Lesson learned!
You must forgive me for posting the occasional image of the Golden Gate Bridge. I like this view of the bridge at sunset because it shows how busy the San Francisco Bay is: one tanker is entering the Bay while another is leaving, and a small fishing vessel makes its way between the two. And then, of course, there is the bridge against a colorful sky, but no fog!
