Since I need some winter images for a proper photo calendar i looked for something worth capturing during those days when we had at least a little bit of snow.
Actually the amount of snow we had wasn’t even enough to cover the grass on this hill, so I cloned out hundreds of grass blades, which was great fun.

Het ‘Minangkabause Huis’ of Naco-gebouwtje werd in 1919 door G.F. La Croix (1877-1923) ontworpen als kantoor en aanlegsteiger voor de voormalige rederij Koppe. Van 1960 tot 2004 was het in gebruik als kantoor van de scheepvaartafdeling van de NACO, de Noordhollandsche AutoCar Onderneming.
Om gewicht te besparen en geen ruimte op de steiger te verspelen, koos de architect voor een houten gebouw op palen. In tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden lijkt de vorm van dit gebouw eerder geïnspireerd op de bouwkunst van de Batakkers die rond het Tobameer wonen, dan op die van de Minangkabauwers, een andere Sumatraanse stam. Duidelijk is in ieder geval de invloed van de traditionele Indische architectuur, hoewel ook de invloed van houten huizen op Marken zichtbaar is. Marken was een van de bestemmingen van de rederij, en La Croix was betrokken bij de wederopbouw van het eiland na de overstroming van 1916.
Het gebouwtje werd in 2004 tijdelijk verplaatst naar Zaanstad i.v.m. de bouw van het nieuwe busstation bij CS. Stadsherstel nam het pand in 2016 over van busmaatschappij Connexxion (voortgekomen uit o.a. de Naco). Het is op een werf opgeknapt, en eind 2021 teruggeplaatst aan de kade. Het staat sindsdien bij de Oostertoegang.

was a historic sandstone shipping quay built in 1791 in Little Neston, Cheshire, to export coal from the Neston Collieries to North Wales and Ireland, as well as for inland transport via canal.
The Neston Coalfield first disturbed the peaceful fields of Ness over two hundred and fifty years ago, in 1759. It was an eastward extension of the North Flintshire Coalfields across the Dee, and much of the coal was hewn from tunnels that ran out under the river.
Sir John Massey Stanley, of the rich and influential Stanley family, lord of the Manor of Ness sunk the first shaft, but in the following decades complex issues of land ownership emerged, involving Stanley, the Earl of Shrewsbury who held 3/5 of Little Neston, and the Cottingham family, who held the other 2/5.

Crossing the Big Sioux River on the large bridge built for the Chicago & North Western by the American Bridge Company in 1904, D&I’s MSCDR-14 heads out on the branch to Beresford at Hawarden, IA. The branch to Beresford, like many lines, was once a through route and connected to the C&NWs famous “Alco Line” at Iroquois, SD. In 1978 it was abandoned with the east of Beresford portion going to the state of South Dakota. In more recent years it only served a single plastics customer after the grain elevator in Beresford stopped shipping grain. Currently however, the plastics customer has been moved to a transload site in Hawarden and the branch is used mostly for car storage.
