Detail of tile in an arched doorway in the St. Louis Union Station Hotel. Union Station was designed by Theodore Link and opened in 1894. The station was converted into a hotel (now a Hilton) in the 1980s.

posed beautifully - though not in the easiest place to photograph! could this be a Yellow Shell? thanks to the mothfather for confirmation of ID.

Shell I picked from diving trip last week

Macro Monday -shell theme

Saturday afternoon I had a very good beach walk along Lake Michigan. The weather felt more like October than late November.

I saw this shotgun shell next to the zebra mussel shells and the driftwood. The beach is in the city, so the shotgun shell must have washed ashore from somewhere else. Were boaters hunting for ducks?

Aerial of Shell Creek Super Bloom

A cutaway of a nautilus shell. The Nautilus shell is often associated with the golden ratio. There is a fair amount of confusion, misinformation and controversy though over whether the graceful spiral curve of the nautilus shell is based on this golden proportion.

Two-mile long River Morar empties from Loch Morar into the sea, here, in the Morar Estuary.

Glistening white shell-sand fringes the whole bay.

And so they continue, over 40 such crescent-cove beaches,

line up along this sumptuous coastline, in a mere ten-mile stretch, to Arisaig.

Their hinterland includes hills and mountains, lochs and rivers, forest and moorland, headlands, sand-dunes, villages, camp-sites and even Traigh Golf Course.

Gulf Stream, turquoise, aquamarine and azure waters.

Astounding and breath-taking sunsets.

Wondrous views to Skye, Rum and Eigg.

Like canine incisors the distant Black Cuillins rise above the encircling hills.

A coastline that few find, but even fewer forget.

There was some something about this that caught my eye. Perhaps a visual representation of never truly being stuck and having the strength to crack through our constraints.

Hermit Crabs are very social animals and can live 10 years or more, changing shells, molting several times throughout their lives and growing up to six inches in length. They're quite docile so you can handle them easily or have fun watching them as they interact, climb and explore with their habitat mates.

Harmony Hall

Collection of shells at Harmony Hall, Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

When I see a bunch of shells on the beach, I want to hoard them like a pirate. At some point in history, these were money.

This photo is reprocessed from an earlier version here. (justenoughfocus.smugmug.com/Portfolio/Full/i-MVVZNj3) The tools for post-processing are continually being updated, so lately I've been having a little fun going back to old photos to tease out a new look. I don't recall what tools I used back in 2015, but this time, I used the latest version of Skylum's Luminar.

Nevertheless, what got my attention in this scene is all of the shells in the foreground; they must have been deposited after a storm. You can go to a store and buy a bag of shells for ten bucks, or you could just go to the beach and pick them up yourself. Better yet, send me the money, and I'll get them for you! (just kidding)

Like the colours of this shell beach.

Sanibel Island, on Florida's west coast, is famous for its great shell collecting. That's where all these came from - my daughter and family camped there recently, and managed to transport all these shells back home to New York.
