Whilst stopping over in Dubai we hired a desert safari driver the following day to take us down to Abu Dhabi and visit some of the highlights. First stop was Sheikh Zayed Mosque which is unlike anything I've ever seen before! Absolutely amazing!
They have free guided tours every day at 10am except Fridays and I highly recommend a visit!
A little info on the Mosque:
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الشيخ زايد) in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried next to the mosque(outer left side). The mosque was opened for worship since Eid Al Adha December 2007.
It also houses the world's largest carpet which is made by Iran's Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi.
This mosque also held the largest chandelier. There are seven imported chandeliers from Germany made from gold-plated copper and fitted with millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height. The chandelier was relegated to second place when the current record holder was unveiled in Doha.

Sheikh Akram commands over 6.000 peshmergas in the Kurdish army. He is the head of the Hanarai tribe. The tribe of about 3.000 families lives in 24 villages in and around Mala Omar, close to Erbil. More than 8.000 men of the tribe are willing to sacrifice their life for their leader.
During the Iran / Iraq war (1980 to 1988), he collaborated with Saddam Hussein, hunting down the Peshmergas and chasing them away into the mountains.
While a great rivalry opposed them, Sheikh Akram reconciled with Massoud Barzani (the President of Iraqi Kurdistan, and head of the KDP - Kurdistan Democratic Party) during the Kurdish uprising of 1991. This spectacular decision to turn coat was merely strategic. The Sheikh still maintains good relations with Saddam's family.
In the previous weeks Israel had began forcible evictions of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of Jerusalem. Since 1967, the goal of Israeli nationalists - as part of their ambition to create a greater Israel from the Mediterranean to the river Jordan, continually backed policies to build illegal settlements around the neighbourhood with the ultimate intention of expelling Palestinians from Jerusalem.
Taken at one of London's largest protests in many years as tens of thousands set off across Hyde Park for the Israeli Embassy in Kensington. Demonstrators were angry over Israel's illegal occupation, forced evictions, the Gaza blockade, the devastating air strikes including attacks on tower blocks and the international media and the country's continued defiance of international law.
