At the moment it's time for "canned food" - due to the lack of new travel options, I once again searched my hard drive for unedited pictures from past trips. I came across this picture of the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi. Apparently there is a multi-colored lighting concept for this bridge - but on that evening it was simply illuminated in white - probably the reason why I have so far ignored the picture...

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture and design. Conceived by Sheikh Zayed, and marking his final resting-place, the mosque is one of the few in the region open to non-Muslims. More than 90,000 tonnes of pure white marble from the Republic of Macedonia were used in its construction. In the interior, three steel, gold, brass and crystal chandeliers fill the main prayer hall with shafts of primary-coloured light. The chandeliers, the largest of which weighs approximately 11 tonnes, sparkle with Swarovski crystals and shine with 40kg of 24-karat galvanised gold. One of the prayer hall's most impressive features is the world's largest loomed carpet fashioned from Iranian cotton and New Zealand wool and flown in from Mashad, Iran, on two aeroplanes – Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, United Arabic Emirates

Two more views of the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Naqsh-e Jahan Square.
Wikipedia: Wikipedia: Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is one of the masterpieces of Iranian architecture that was built during the Safavid Empire, standing on the eastern side of Naqsh-i Jahan Square, Esfahan, Iran. Construction of the mosque started in 1603 and was finished in 1619. It was built by the chief architect Mohammadreza Isfahani, during the reign of Shah Abbas I of Persia.
The purpose of this mosque was for it to be private to the royal court (unlike the Shah Mosque, which was meant for the public). For this reason, the mosque does not have any minarets and is smaller. Indeed, few Westerners at the time of the Safavids even paid any attention to this mosque, and they certainly did not have access to it. Today, these doors are open to visitors.

On a recent Cruise, before the Covid 19 nightmare, we stopped off at Abu Dhabi. One of our party had lived there for many years and he had arranged with a friend to guide us for the day. Our first visit was to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and what an experience that was! One of our party compared it to Venice and while it did not have the history etc. of that city it had the opulence, attention to detail and craftsmanship synonymous with that city! Our guide, Abdullah, was one of those special people who enjoy showing you around as much as you enjoy his descriptions. He was wonderful, helpful and a fund of knowledge! This view is from the visitor centre which was an experience in itself.
