"Ephemerals: That's what Hub called them; flowers that bloomed and died in a matter of weeks, before the trees leafed out and shaded them. She liked the way the word sounded in her head. I am an ephemeral. It made her feel like something passing and precious."

Pamela Todd, The Blind Faith Hotel

The season's shine is spent,

Nothing remains for it but shivering

In tempests turbulent..."

"Shut your eyes, wait, think of nothing. Now, open them ... one sees nothing but a great coloured undulation. What then? An irradiation and glory of colour. This is what a picture should give us ... an abyss in which the eye is lost, a secret germination, a coloured state of grace ... loose conciousness. Descend with the painter into the dim tangled roots of things, and rise again from them in colours, be steeped in the light of them."

Paul Cezanne

"The tulips are too excitable, it is winter here.

Look how white everything is, how quiet, how snowed-in

I am learning peacefulness, lying by myself quietly

As the light lies on these white walls, this bed, these hands.

I am nobody; I have nothing to do with explosions..."

He doesn’t bark often.

But when he does, it’s not for attention — it’s to remind the world that silence can still carry weight.

There’s something ancient in his stare.

Not sadness, not joy. Just presence.

Like he’s seen things.

Like he remembers who you used to be.

Black-and-white not for nostalgia,

but because some souls don’t need color to be heard.

I found this wonderful little spot where the aspens meet a meadow on one side and a dried up creek bed on the other... can't wait to try this shot again in color this autumn!

The colours are tweaked a bit on photoshop - I don't often do this, but I liked the effect.

Hope you do too.

"I just prefer wood. I like the smell..."

Junior Johnson

"I don't like things that can be reproduced. Wood isn't important in itself but rather in the fact that objects made in it are unique, simple, unpretentious."

“We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”

Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

Ruby throated hummingbird feeding, beard- tongue being the flower. The focal point wound up on the main body of the bird and head and eyes are out of focus. I tried to selectively sharpen the eyes and head to make it look somewhat similar to what I saw with my eyes. Along with the sharpening came the grit and grain of the underlaying noise from the 800 iso. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. I may be able to print with this but basically it is unusable for commercial uses. They want to see no noise at 100%, no grit or grain, and they want no washed out details at 100%. When we view large size here at 72dpi that is not even close to 100%.

He does not chase the storm.

He waits for it to kneel.

In the silence of his breath,

mountains remember how to be still.

The cold in his fur,

the fire in his gaze —

he is both beginning and return.

A glossy black grackle perches boldly on the arm of a woven wicker chair, its piercing pale yellow eye fixed intently on something just out of frame. The bird's long, fanned tail feathers hang down past the chair's edge, catching a slight iridescent sheen where light hits the black plumage. Behind it, sunlit sea grape leaves create a soft green and yellow blur, throwing the sharply focused bird into striking contrast. Known for their bold, sometimes pushy behavior around outdoor dining areas, grackles like this one are a common and unmistakable presence at resorts throughout Puerto Rico, unafraid to claim a seat of their own.

No meetings.

No walkies.

No drama.

Just this face… pressed into the void, processing nothing but vibes and yesterday’s snacks.

Eyes half-open. Tongue halfway out.

He’s not asleep. He’s above sleep.

This is enlightenment. This is resistance.

This is… Ncop at rest.

This Lark Sparrow was strutting across the pavement with a fresh catch, a sizable grasshopper clenched tightly in its beak.

I photographed this moment at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, where the sparrow was foraging near the edge of a parking lot. The morning light brought out the detail in its plumage and the insect it had just nabbed.

Lark Sparrows are known for their striking facial markings and melodious calls. This one seemed quite content with its meal, unfazed by the nearby human presence. A lucky encounter in an unlikely spot.

The Wild Iris (Iris setosa) is found in bogs and meadows and along lake shores. The family for the Wild Iris is Iridaceae. Unfortunately, in spite of all of it's beauty, the Wild Iris has no scent. The 3 large, droopy, colorful parts that you would normally expect to be the petals are actually sepals. The 3 small, narrow, erect petals are in the center of the flower. The sword-like leaves are tall and stiff. Irises bloom in June and July. They form cup like seed pods that can be harvested in August after they are dry and brown. A coffee like drink can be made from the seeds. Some people prefer to roast the seeds before grinding them to make the drink. Wild Iris is an example of exquisite beauty!
