NGC 7331, also known as Caldwell 30 (a.k.a. The Deer Lick Group), is an unbarred spiral galaxy about 40 million light-years (12 Mpc) away in the constellation Pegasus. It was discovered by William Herschel on 6 September 1784.

The galaxy appears similar in size and structure to the Milky Way, and is sometimes referred to as "the Milky Way's twin". However, discoveries in the 2000s regarding the structure of the Milky Way may call this similarity into doubt, particularly because the latter is now believed to be a barred spiral, compared to the unbarred status of NGC 7331.

In spiral galaxies the central bulge typically co-rotates with the disk but the bulge in the galaxy NGC 7331 is rotating in the opposite direction to the rest of the disk. In both visible light and infrared photos of the NGC 7331, the core of the galaxy appears to be slightly off-center, with one side of the disk appearing to extend further away from the core than the opposite side.

NGC 7331 is the brightest galaxy in the field of a visual grouping known as the NGC 7331 Group of galaxies. In fact, the other members of the group, NGC 7335, NGC 7336, NGC 7337 and NGC 7340, lie far in the background at distances of approximately 300–350 million light years.

All of the members of the NGC 7331 Group, along with NGC 7325, NGC 7326, NGC 7327, NGC 7333, NGC 7338, are listed together as Holm 795 in Erik Holmberg's A Study of Double and Multiple Galaxies Together with Inquiries into some General Metagalactic Problems, published in 1937.

Three supernovae have been observed in NGC 7331:

- SN 1959D (type II-L, mag. 13.4) was discovered by Milton Humason and H. S. Gates in a survey at Palomar Observatory on 28 June 1959.

- SN 2013bu (type II, mag. 16.6) was discovered by Kōichi Itagaki on 21 April 2013.

- SN 2014C was discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) on 5 January 2014. The star underwent an unusual "metamorphosis" from a hydrogen-poor Type Ib to a hydrogen-rich Type IIn over the course of a year.

In addition to the confirmed supernovae, a 1903 photographic plate from Yerkes Observatory shows a magnitude 16.6 candidate transient that may have also been a supernova.

NGC 2261 (also known as Hubble's Variable Nebula or Caldwell 46) is a variable nebula located 2,500 ly away in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is illuminated by the star R Monocerotis (R Mon), which is not directly visible itself.

The star R Monocerotis has lit up a nearby cloud of gas and dust, but the shape and brightness slowly changes visibly even in small telescopes over weeks and months, and the nebula looks like a small comet.

One explanation proposed for the variability is that dense clouds of dust near R Mon periodically block the illumination from the star. This casts a temporary shadow on the nearly clouds.

from Wikipedia

NGC 2775 , also known as Caldwell 48 , is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Cancer . It is 67 million light-years (20.5 megaparsecs ) away from the Milky Way . It was discovered by William Herschel in 1783. NGC 2775 belongs to the Antlia - Hydra Cluster of galaxies and is the most prominent member of the NGC 2775 Group , a small galaxy group in the Virgo Super-cluster , along with the Local Group . Other members of the NGC 2775 Group include NGC 2777 and UGC 4781 .

This object has a morphological classification of SA(r)ab, which indicates an unbarred spiral galaxy (SA) with a prominent ring structure (r) and flocculent , tightly wound spiral arms (ab). The galaxy is inclined by an angle of 44° to the line of sight from the Earth . The galactic nucleus is not active and the large nuclear bulge , which extends out to an angular radius of 0.4′ , is relatively gas free. An explanation for the latter could be a high supernova rate. Although star formation is taking place in the dusty outer ring, NGC 2775 does not display any current starburst activity , and the galactic nucleus is virtually free of any star formation whatsoever.

The galaxy's hydrogen tail feature indicates a past interaction with a faint companion. A satellite galaxy appears to have orbited NGC 2775 multiple times, losing mass as it does so and creating faint, shell-like structures. Nearby irregular galaxy NGC 2777 displays a tidal tail of hydrogen gas that points back to NGC 2775, suggesting the two may be linked.

One supernova has been observed in NGC 2775. SN 1993Z ( type Ia , mag. 13.9) was discovered by the Leuschner Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) on 23 September 1993. By September 25, spectral analysis showed that it had peaked about four weeks earlier.

From Wikipedia:

Markarian 231 (UGC 8058) is a Type-1 Seyfert galaxy that was discovered in 1969 as part of a search of galaxies with strong ultraviolet radiation. It contains the nearest known quasar. Markarian 231 is located about 581 million light years away from Earth.

The Markarian 231 galaxy is now undergoing an energetic starburst. A nuclear ring of active star formation has been found in the center with a rate of formation greater than 100 solar masses per year. It is one of the most ultraluminous infrared galaxies with power derived from an accreting black hole in the center, and the closest known quasar.

A 2015 study suggested that the central black hole, estimated to be 150 million times the mass of our Sun, may have a black hole companion weighing in at 4 million solar masses, and that the duo completed an orbit around each other every 1.2 years.

However, that model was subsequently shown to be unfeasible.

Another study has found evidence for the presence of molecular oxygen (O2) by using submillimeter astronomy, the first time molecular oxygen had been detected outside of the Milky Way galaxy.

I had so many problems last night. Some serious guiding issues. Either the mount couldn't turn the gears properly or Sharpcaps Polar Alignment is giving me terrible results. Before the session yesterday I loosened the nut holding the RA bearings in place because RA felt a little sticky still, however I also discovered that my RA setting circle locking screw would cause RA to completely bind when it was even slightly tightened. I removed it but I should have re-tightened the main RA nut again as I think the setting circle problem was the actual cause.

Sharpcap said I had perfect polar alignment (0.04 arc/min) but my guiding was terrible and PHD2 Drift align said it was way out. This was 41-45s lights @ ISO 800 after I gave up on M33 due to guiding having issues. 30 bias, 73 dark, and 30 flats that didn't seem to do much.

The Eskimo Nebula is a bipolar double-shell planetary nebula in Gemini. The formation resembles a person's head surrounded by a parka hood. It is surrounded by gas that composed the outer layers of a Sun-like star. The visible inner filaments are ejected by a strong wind of particles from the central star. The outer disk contains unusual, light-year-long filaments.

A chain of 3 craters, each about 160 miles wide, on the western border of Mare Nectaris. The northen most, Theophilus, has impressive central peaks. The 3 craters are of increasing age as we go from north to south. Shot with a ZWO 120mm-s monochrome planetary camera, a SC11 f/10 telescope, and a 2X barlow lens (therefore f/20). Obtained from a stack of 933 frames. Software used: SharpCap, Registax 6, Photoshop CS3. 2 april 2017.

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus.

It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. At the time of explosion, the supernova would have appeared brighter than Venus in the sky, and visible in daytime. The remnants have since expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 3 degrees in diameter (about 6 times the diameter, and 36 times the area, of the full Moon). While previous distance estimates have ranged from 1200 to 5800 light-years, a recent determination of 2400 light-years is based on direct astrometric measurements. (The distance estimates affect also the estimates of size and age.)
