Planet Earth Needs your Help

This month is water conservation month in one of Florida's very populated counties, so I thought it would be nice to see how we might apply the United Nation’s concept of working with Nature to solve a problem on the planet. This latest article looks at what is currently done to conserve and manage water and what could be done using Nature’s method to manage and conserve this vital resource.

Setophaga ruticilla, male American Redstart. The females this time of year are orangey-yellow, it's only the males who are bright black and neon orange-red.

This photo doesn't do his sides justice, they really are quite bright.

The Northern Parula never did get a bath, the poor little darling. The trio was here for a total of 4 minutes and I took a lot of photos, which I've gradually been going through and uploading one by one. I really didn't upload all of them! I've never seen three warblers together before, let alone three different kinds of warblers, and I don't really expect that to happen again, so it was pretty exciting.

Here's a backwards slideshow of the event:

Male American redstarts like this one seemed to be the bird of the day today. View him large to see his fine feathery moustache -- ideal for brushing flies into his mouth.

Got the word that there was a Grace's Warbler and an American Redstart over in Don and Rita's birdbath. Made it over there after many had come and gone. The Redstart was still there, but the Grace's did not make another appearance. Photographed in Pacific Grove, CA.
