In this episode, Christina and I take a look at the marriages in Little Women and how they correlate with Louisa May Alcott´s ideas of marriage and what was expected of a woman during the 19th century. youtu.be/WRnHSlbCqNw

"Only my full heart and empty hands"

Bonjour mes amis! Time to travel back to Valrosa. This is a deep dive into Laurie´s inner world, which surely is romantic but not at all realistic. What he really needs is Amy Curtis March to bring him back to earth. Yes, I ship...and what a surprise...there was a story similar to Amy and Laurie that Miss Alcott enjoyed reading as a young girl. youtu.be/5bF7zWNn2vM

"Only my full heart and empty hands"

Louisa May Alcott always wanted to become a mother and she always seemed to have griefed that she didn´t have children of her own. Like many other things, she gave what she wanted to her literal counterpart. Join Christina and me in our discussion about Jo´s and Friedrich´s desire to become parents.

"Only my full heart and empty hands"

Produced a year after the coronation of James II (1633–1701), this silver cup celebrates the monarchy and reflects the political and social alliances that underpinned the aristocracy during the 1600s. During their coronation, James II and his second wife Mary of Modena (1658–1718) were carried through the city of London under a silk canopy adorned with motifs inspired by European perceptions of Chinese art, known as chinoiserie. Following the procession, the thirty-two lords involved in the ceremony were each offered a portion of the cloth from the canopy as well as sixteen troy ounces of silver from the posts. At least two of them commissioned cups adorned with chinoiserie to be made from the silver. While it is unclear if this cup once belonged to one of the thirty-two peers, it was almost certainly created in response to the same motifs and social developments.

Copperware have antimicrobial properties. Copper utensils and cookware helped to prevent the spread of diseases. In many tests it showed that 99.9% of the bacteria on copper alloy surfaces (with 65% or greater copper content) were eliminated within 2 hours of exposure. According to research at Southampton University in the U.K., MRSA microbes remain alive on stainless steel surfaces for up to three days, whereas the same microbes on a copper surface are eliminated within 90 minutes.

English potteries often courted aristocratic clients with cheaper wares that looked like more expensive works from the major centers of porcelain production in the eighteenth century, especially France, Germany, and China. In this case, the image printed in center of the plate depicts a young lady, enticing a boy with her skill at blowing soap bubbles through a thin pipe. The print was taken from an etching by Jean Daullé (French, 1703–1763), of the painting La souffleuse de savon (1758) by Francois Boucher (French, 1703–1770).
