It may be safely assumed that St Dominic did not know much about the natural sciences; in those days, few people did, and what they knew was elementary. The hour of natural science had not yet struck. But Dominic was outstanding in the other two departments of wisdom: He was a sound, clear-headed theologian, and at the same time sensitive and docile to the Holy Spirit... How refreshing to see a saint like Dominic, a man marked by breadth of vision and by a total lack of narrow-mindedness. How heartening to see his calm acceptance and evaluation of facts, and his judicious, far-sighted adaptation of them, always keeping his goal in view. One does not picture him as a prisoner of the immediate present, although he lived in it; nor as a man harried and worried by a sea of complications and details. Decision, clarity, effectiveness attended him. Looking back, we can see that his solution was so perfect that it betrays something of the divine wisdom that inspired it. Dominic was a wise, wise man."

Fabacée de 10-40 cm à tiges herbacées grêles, rampantes ou ascendantes, épineuses, parfois grimpantes. Feuilles alternes, composées et bipennées, normalement persistantes. Long pétiole de 2-6 cm portant à l'extrémité 2 paires de pennes (parfois une seule) très rapprochées, chacune comportant 15-25 folioles de 6-10 mm. Très irritables, celles-ci ont la particularité de se replier au moindre choc (thigmonastie).
Il s'agit d'un mouvement spectaculaire du règne végétal, dû à de petits renflements à la base des feuilles et des folioles, appelés pulvinus, composés de cellules "motrices" spécialisées et gonflés d'eau. Au moindre attouchement, cette eau est évacuée dans les tissus avoisinants. La rétraction des feuilles touchées commence dans le dixième de seconde après le contact et se déroule en deux temps selon l'importance du contact. Tout d'abord, les folioles touchés se replient et disparaissent à la vue en environ 3-4 secondes. Un choc plus fort induit le repli des feuilles voisines et s'il est plus fort encore le mouvement de repli atteint toutes les feuilles d'un même côté, puis est suivi du repli des feuilles du côté opposé de la plante. Il y a donc deux transmissions distinctes : la première rétractation des folioles qui se propage à environ 2 m/minute, et dans un deuxième temps la rétractation des feuilles, quatre fois plus lente, atteignant toute la plante. Le tout est en trois mouvements : les folioles, les feuilles, puis toute la plante, puis le calme revenu, les feuilles reprennent leur port.
Inflorescence axillaire ou terminale, formée de 1-4 glomérules de couleur rose à pourpre, de 1 à 1,5 cm, portés par un pédoncule de 12-25 mm de long, chaque glomérule étant composé de nombreuses fleurs. Calice minuscule, corolle de 4 pétales soudés et campanulée, de 2 à 3 mm, avec 4 étamines roses à anthères blanches de 7-8 mm formant l'androcée et au milieu le style blanc filiforme. Gousse frangée, plate et composée de 3-4 articles, 1-1,5 cm, à marge armée de longs poils raides, chaque article contenant 1 graine lisse de forme ovale à orbiculaire, de couleur brune.
Autres noms français : Herbe mamzelle, Honteuse femelle, Manzelle Marie, Marie-honte, Mimosa pudique, Trompe la mort. Espèce originaire du Brésil, maintenant distribuée de façon pantropicale, largement naturalisée à travers le monde (cf. A Bärtels, mi-aime-a-ou.com).

These kind of wallflowers pop up everywhere. They are not in the least bit climate sensitive! .... Although mind you. They do prefer warm places to do their thing!
One routine that I have is winding my antique clocks once a week. The more that I repair... the more that need winding.

"The Temple of Flora" is considered to be the greatest of all flower books. Illustrated here is the third and final part "New illustration of the sexual system of Carolus von Linnaeus" by the English physician and botanical writer Robert John Thornton (1768–1837). Thornton was destined to be a priest, but switched to medicine after finding inspiration in the botanical lectures and works by Thomas Martyn and Carl Linnaeus. The exotic plants in the aquatint and mezzotint prints are notable by their epic and unusual settings. We have digitally enhanced these beautiful flower plates, available for you to download under the creative commons 0 license.

Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have captured new images of the dancing auroral lights at Saturn’s north pole. Taken in April and May 2013 from Hubble’s perspective in orbit around Earth, these observations provide a detailed look at previously unseen dynamics in the choreography of the auroral glow.
The ultraviolet images, taken by Hubble’s super-sensitive Advanced Camera for Surveys, capture moments when Saturn’s magnetic field is affected by bursts of particles streaming from the Sun.
Saturn’s magnetosphere – the vast magnetic ‘bubble’ that surrounds the planet – is compressed on the Sunward side of the planet, and streams out into a long ‘magnetotail’ on the nightside.
It appears that when particles from the Sun hit Saturn, the magnetotail collapses and later reconfigures itself, an event that is reflected in the dynamics of its auroras.
Saturn was caught during a very dynamic light show – some of the bursts of light seen shooting around Saturn’s polar regions travelled more than three times faster than the speed of the gas giant’s roughly 10-hour rotation period!
The new observations were taken as part of a three-year Hubble observing campaign, and are presented in a paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The images complement those taken by the international Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn.

Ahm, a young Zabrak padawan and one of the closest friends of Jona Valis was recognized as force sensitive very early in his life and thoroughly trained by the Jedi order. He later became the Padawan of Master Reida Sarol, a member of the high council. Despite being admired for his great skill and knowledge of the living force, Ahm still had doubts about his abilities and often expressed them when being talked to.

A little more information about the two new characters I introduced to my story Uncertain ways recently. I think these character photos turned out well and it is a good oportunity to have a closer look at the charatcers. I might even create some real character sheets with even more information for every character, especially Jona, one day.
Janice's cast was removed this morning! She's feeling the freedom. Now, seven weeks after the orthopedic surgery, she needs to start bearing weight on her right leg in a slow progress. Her instructions are to use a bathroom scale, applying pressure up to twenty pounds today. These exercises will increase in weight bearing over the next three weeks, until she can stand with half her weight on her right leg.
WOW! Our Raspberry Pi Meteor Cameras were certainly kept busy last night! There are a couple of false detections from low aircraft but otherwise all of these events look like meteors. Most of them are Perseids but there are also some Kapp Cygnids in there and a few sporadics too. You can clearly see the Perseids are all coming from the same direction.
The total detections on each of our meteor cameras is as follows:
UK0006 - 168
UK000F - 226
UK001L - 180
UK002F - 223
The RMS servers crashed at one point we had so much data! The matching engine is still running trajectory calculations as I write this and I suspect it will be later today before all of this data has been crunched.
Visually my husband and I sat outside from 22:30 until 02:00 BST both facing in different directions, and we kept a tally of what we were seeing.
We saw a total of 86 meteors:
72 Perseids
9 Kappa Cygnids
7 Sporadics
The meteor cameras are much more sensitive than our eyes.
