Our family had to have some sort of vacation holiday and chose an area of the country that was less densely populated and with lower COVID-19 rates. It also happened to include North Dakota, a state none of us had been to and marks state #49 for Tamara. We had a wonderful trip, got labeled as "Covid-sensitive" at a restaurant (which we now bear as a badge of honor), and got to see and explore a lot of places that in a 'normal' year we probably would have missed out on.
Got this photo sensitive paper at the Museum of Jurassic Technology last year, and finally got around to trying it out. Basically, this paper is sensitive to strong light, like the sun. You put things on it to make shadows then put it in the sun till it turns white. Then you rinse it off in a water bath for a minute, and let it dry. As it dries, the background (exposed part) turns blue, and the non-exposed part (the shadows) turn white.

Gazes, comments, lewd remarks, obscene gestures are a part of the everyday lived reality of women. In any publrc spaces including the self-proclaimed progressive and gender sensitive JNU, women live daily with these forms of harassment. And yet they are not supposed to react. Rather silently comply, overlook, 'pretend that she just does not see'. Because once you raise your voice, retaliate or struggle back, backlash of the patriarchal system is bound Lo unleash on you. The questions, intimidation, interrogations start. Why were you looked/commented at? What went wrong from your side? And WHY are you making such a big deal about it? Why were you slloullng like a nutcase at the top of your lungs? How dare you hit them back? How could you file a case agamst them aren't you concerned about their career? Well the usual questions and 'concerns' rise, not for the grrl who went through the humiliatron, the harassment, and yet dared to fight back. But for the lumpen harassers who comment, torture, do all sorts of indecent acts and yet at the end of the day get the 'benefit of doubt' and bouts of sympathy. That's how patriarchy operates. And on top of everything there is slander. A secured trme-tested weapon used against all women who in some way or the other try to defy the given norms of patrrarchy. Slander can be as tormenting to a woman's life as an incident harassment, as it happens in secret, mostly unknown to tile person slandered against. Sometimes however slanderers are shamelessly blatant and open. Last day the pamphlet that came to the mess (many of the 'signatories' however drd not agree with the statement and were unaware of their names being put in) against the north eastern girl who had dared to raise her voice against a group of lumpen harassers, is one such instance of blatant slandenng. .
The pamphlet gave a reportage of 'eye-witnesses' who tried to esta blish that the woman harassed was 'morally unscrupulous' and therefore can not be trusted. It is the very usual tag put on girls who fight back harassment The 'eye-witnesses' however did not mentron the InJury the woman sustained after being beaten up by the two lumpens, they never heard the obscene comments they made. They tried to portray that the gtrl IS falsely gettmg the 'mnocent men' accused in a GSCASH case (afterall GSCASH according to many is the bogus rnst1tut1on wh1ch was formed to impl1cate rnnocent sanghr lumpens by morally corrupt characterless g 1 rls') .
The signatories of the pamphlet accused the girls and others who had st ood in support of her, of maliciously invoking her north eastern identity. They are wrllfully oblivious to the growing cases of north eastern girls bemg harassed rn the campus and outside. Last semester too a few cases of harassment around 24x7 dhaba had taken place, where north eastern girls were harassed, commented at. Can we wish these cases away? lsn't this case another glanng rnstance of how the mainstream Ind1an male gaze particularly find their targets in North Eastern grrls. Patriarchy and raosm after all are old friends. The racist discrimination with which the people from North east are treated 1n general in Jndia finds it specific and most disgusting expression tn the way the women of north east are perceived, objectified and rabidly slandered against. .
The issue is not of man versus woman, but of patriarchy versus justice and dem ocracy. This is even clearer as many of the testimonies 1n the slanderous pamphlet along with signatures are of women. And they are ready to stand in defense of two lumpcns, one of thern Amrt M1shra is the vice president of ABVP while the other Imran Amin, 1s a known lumpen, rather than slandrng with the woman who had been harassed, assaulted, intimidated and now slandered against. Patnarchy after all IS entrenched in all of us, be it man or .
woman, and in instances lrke thrs 1t becomes where we stand, wilh whom we stand. .
Till now the JNUSU is maintaining an un canny silen ce over the issue, along with other self-proclaimed progressive organizatio ns. They never look a stand although the harassers and the other people who assaulted the g1rl were all well known sanghi lumpens. The medra reported that Imran Amin is an AJSA member, and AISA d1d not dispute the claim till now. lnfact, one of the Vice Presidents of AISA unit has been a part of the slander campaigning and tellrng people that 'nothrng of this sort happened on that day, and these are motivated propaganda'. Well, what can one expect From AlSA, whose hobnobbing with ABVP lumpens is an open secret. Moreover, Last semester they also blatantly defended a faculty member, an ex-AISA activist, .
who was punished in a serious case of sexual harassment. They took a position in favour of the woman complainant only at the very end after being attacked by all sectrons, thal too with some reservation. We do not expect anything from AISA or JNUSU, but it is shocking to see the rest of the campus also not taking a decisive stand in favour of the girl in her fight for justice. .
The girl has shown exceptional courage in confronting these habitual harassers. She is fighting and not giving up despite repeated threats and slander. It is fights and struggles like these which are steps towards making the campus gender sensitive and gender just in reality and therefore must be upheld and supported till she gets justice. .
