Self heal [Prunella vulgaris]

In our garden this little plant grows with gay abandon in our poor well drained almost structureless soil. An ideal habit indeed.

Handsome as self heal is, its tendency to creep and success in self seeding does not put a smile on a gardeners face. I however, have left self heal to do its thing unmolested in our rockery.

I used a vintage lens, namely the Takumar 55mm f2:2. Wide open

These self-portraits are full of the three Gs: Goofiness, Geekiness, and Galloway. ^__^

Un essai d'autoportrait à base de photos très sous-exposées prises dans l'obscurité puis retouchées. / A try of self portraits with low exposure shots in the darkness and then processed.

Took some picture on my bike today, but didn't like it. So I decided to do a self portrait, strobist style.....kinda.

My submission for 52frames Week 36 - Combine Three challenges. I combined Self-portrait, fill the frame, A line from a Song (Stare into my eyes - Eric K).

thought I ought to upload something other than 365s, so here's my fave self portrait I did, with no meaning behind it whatsoever

For better or worse.

There's a limit to what you can photograph when you have to self-isolate. So out with my long lens to capture this bird sitting alone for a while on a branch of a neighbour's tree at sunrise - a bit like me! I had symptoms - sore throat, runny nose, fatigue - for a week but can't complain. Covid has caused many people a lot more pain and grief.

I am really looking forward to getting out and about again. Another day to go...

Ending the year with a self portrait. Happy New Year!

Self-anointing is a behaviour exhibited by all species of Hedgehog, but nobody really knows why they do it. I have never seen a wild Hedgehog self-anoint, but rearing this orphaned youngster has given me plenty of opportunities to witness it. They create a foamy saliva then undergo contortions to cover those hard-to-reach bits using their surprisingly long tongues. You can see the foamy saliva on that ridge near her tongue. My Hedgehog self-anoints when she tastes or smells something new, such as the first time she tasted cat-food, a worm, marjoram, and even after licking my son's feet. But sometimes she just does it for no apparent reason. The term self-anointing was coined by Maurice Burton, and was first used in a 1958 paper in New Scientist documenting the behaviour. But the behaviour was first recorded by German zoologist Ludwig Heck in 1912, when he called it selbstbespuchen, or ‘self-spitting’. Various theories have been put forward to exlain it (eg masking their smell, creating an extra irritant for would-be predators, deterring parasites) but for each idea there are examples that run counter to it. Anyway, there seem to be very few photographs on Flickr showing this behaviour, and it is something I wasn't previously aware of, so I thought I would share it. If you want to read more about the various theories attempting to explain the behaviour this is the best site: www.wildlifeonline.me.uk/animals/article/european-hedgeho...

Self-reflection

"Ogni tanto... scendeva fino al lago e passava ore a guardarlo, giacché, disegnato sull’acqua, gli pareva di vedere l’inspiegabile spettacolo, lieve, che era stata la sua vita." - Alessandro Baricco.

Alba di qualche giorno fa... avevo le mani congelate ma gli occhi pieni di luce e di bellezza... e la paura di scivolare e scomparire in un istante in questo specchio di cielo e di me.

Buona giornata :)

True love from the heart is eternal. I take pride in being 100% real and bleed passion and knowledge it self. People come in and out of our lives, we can just hope when it's time to part we can live forever within each other. Good spirits travel and stick to true love of our connections.

Self-portrait done the old way. The camera is set to manual, the lens is anyway (Helios 44M-7 at F5.6), the distance between camera and object has been measured by tape, and the shutter release is by wire. Exposure is preset (based on experience) and WB could stay on auto as the light source is a daylight LED lamp. This old way of doing things does work! Can I also say that the camera is regarded to be "old" (16MP only and "a bit long in the tooth") and that the lens is three or so decades old. May I go even further and state that my up-to-date camera, much more powerful and more sophisticated, does not do better images than the old one?

I don't usually like to take pictures of myself, but I was told every photographer has to take one.

This is my first attempt at it.

light and molecules converge!

Part of a set I did on self-injury. No, it's not real. Corn syrup and food coloring. But it's a real situation that countless people have experienced.

It was cathartic to do these. I wanted to turn my painful past experiences into something beautiful.

Apparently a friggin' TON of people have viewed this, and yet... no comments.

Come on, guys.

Messing around with ideas for a self portrait contest in the North Alabama Photographers Guild (NAPG) group here on Flickr. This is the type of portrait photography I like to do, so it seemed fitting to portray myself as the model and the photographer.

I was going to change shirts and pants for each shot, but it was kinda cool out and getting late, so I didn't bother. :-)

This week, Rhonda, Heather and I challenged each other to take self-portraits!

If you are curious, that's my fun-loving self trying to escape my Type-A personality. They don't always see eye-to-eye, those two. But still, isn't it grand that you get two portraits for the price of one?
