One of the birds our group really wanted to see during our recent California trip was the California Gnatcatcher. We encountered this one at a county park near Los Angeles. While we worked on getting photos of this tiny bird as it moved through the brush we were confronted by what must have been the most curious little boy I have ever encountered. It certainly was a test of our self control to be patient with the little boy and his questions. It felt like I was Mr Wilson in an episode of Dennis the Menace. Looking back on it I can’t help but to smile, it really was comical and in the end everyone ended up with pleasing photos.

Thanksgiving is always a special time of year for Audrey. As leader of the Ladies Bible Study* and song leader,** Audrey reflects on the blessings of God and updates her journal.

Journal Entry November 23

"Today I was at Koncedra Simmons house. Her best friend, Bonnie, was there as well. Koncedra and her husband Oliver*** are pillars in our church. Oliver is an elder and Koncedra is superintendent over all of the ladies classes and activities. She is in authority over me in our church, so I always think of the Scripture, "But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work."

I do appreciate Koncedra and esteem her most highly. She is the most faithful woman I know. She has taught me so much from the Bible and I was humbled when she asked me to teach a class myself. Koncedra is faithful to God at all times and, because of that, through that, faithful to us. She never seems to tire of assisting, and always, though I don't know how, has time to sit with one of us when a talk is needed.

Today she was reviewing my proposed lessons for the coming quarter in the Ladies Bible Study group. Koncedra was confident as usual in the blessings God would provide through the class. She encouraged me by pointing out all the strong areas where God had guided me in outlining the study and she noted some changes to make. Miss Koncedra rarely 'asks' for changes when she believes them needed. 😊 She simply points them out and assumes we will make them. And we do.

God has blessed Koncedra to be a strong leader for us. Another passage I think of with Miss Koncedra is, "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord."

For God's gift of faithfulness, I give thanks today."

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

13 And now I will break his yoke from off you

and will burst your bonds apart.”

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2001), Na 1:13.

Please notice the powerful words from Christ Jesus himself, where he said in his famous, Sermon on the Mount, in chapter 7 of Matthew, if you look at verses 13 & 14; instead of supporting the idea that there are many acceptable ways to approach God, the Bible teaches that there is only one.

Matthew 7:13, 14 says: “Go in through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are finding it.”

Jesus taught here that everyone is on one of these two roads, and most of mankind is traveling along the broad road that leads to destruction. Some people on the broad road have made a deliberate choice to reject what the Bible teaches, but many others are there because they have been deceived, or kept in the dark, as to what Gods Word the bible really requires of them. It is up to us individually to accept the privilege of going over onto the narrow road and drawing closer to God, as from James 4:8.

Another important point to notice is, the very fact that there are two roads proves we have a choice, and our lives are not just ruled by destiny or some clock waiting to end our life.

One road is broad, in other words travelers are permitted to do their own thing, do anything they want, with no rules, no commitments, just a relaxed life style. This is the same thing many relaxed churches offer the public today, just make sure you add to the collection basket, and they guarantee you will be saved. Really? The world has degraded so much today most people do not even realize they are sinning horribly against God, and most churches today just let the badness go for fear of losing membership.

But the other narrow road is cramped, and those on that road must adhere to God’s direction. The narrow road calls for self-control and discipline. Yes, the narrow road has restrictions, and the majority of people does not want all those restrictions. A restriction can be likened to a seat belt in your car; yes, it is restrictive, but it is really for our own good. In my past I was an emergency medical technician and I have brought the ambulance out to many vehicle accidents, and that is the reason I do use my seat belt. Just keeping a person in the vehicle and not letting the driver fly out, with the car rolling on them, is worth wearing the seat belt. Yes, even when something seems restrictive, it is usually designed to save your life, and that is also what the restrictions on the narrow road to life are for. The restrictions of the narrow road are basically just a matter of adhering to God’s direction. The ones on this narrow road to life are more concerned about what Jehovah God feels, than what other people think.

Tgirls, as you will know, can't sit still. At some stage in our meal - quite possibly between courses - various girls left the table to have their photos taken by the amazingly talented Robin.

This included some outdoor settings where the weather was wet and windy. Even in these conditions, Robin was able to take beautiful images.

You would possibly assume that I have too much self-control to pop up from the dinner table simply to pose for photographs in a narcissistic, simpering bad-mannered way.

The evidence suggests that you would be wrong to do so.

In Islam, after one month of fasting each day from sunrise to sunset, Eid-ul-Fitr - the first day of next month - is forbidden for fasting, and all Muslims celebrate it with sweeties, cookies fruit juices and other halal drinks.

-------------------------------------------------------------

From Wikipedia:

Eid ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر, Persian: عید فطر), often abbreviated as simply Eid, sometimes spelled Eid al-Fitr, is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Fitr means "to break the fast" and therefore symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. On the day of the celebration, a typical Muslim family gets up very early and attends special prayers held only for the occasion in mosques, in large open areas, stadiums or arenas. The prayer is generally short, and is followed by a khutba. The festivities and merriment start after the prayers with visits to the homes of friends and relatives and thanking God for all blessings. Eid is a time to come together as a community and to renew friendship and family ties. This is a time for peace for all Muslims in the world to devote to prayers and mutual well-being.

It is a joyous occasion with important religious significance. Happiness is observed as attaining spiritual uplift after a month of fasting. Muslims dress in holiday attire. After attending the special congregational prayer in the morning, worshippers greet and embrace each other in a spirit of peace, love, and brotherhood. Visiting friends and relatives is common.

For Muslims, Eid ul-Fitr is a joyful celebration of the achievement of enhanced piety. It is a day of forgiveness, moral victory and peace, of congregation, fellowship, brotherhood and unity. Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking God for the help and strength that they believe He gave them throughout the previous month to help them practice self-control.

History

The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad with his companions and relatives over the completion a month of fasting.

Timing

The holiday follows the month of Ramadan, falling on the first day of Shawwal (the tenth month in the Islamic calendar). As with all months in the Islamic calendar, it begins with the sighting of the new moon, although some people choose to use scientific calculations instead of a confirmed visual sighting.

Because the day depends on the sighting of the moon, the sighting could only be possible just before the sunset. Most check with local mosques or other members of the community to see if the moon has been sighted by authoritative parties. In Malaysia, they are using both sighting of the moon and astronomical calculation to verify the date. But the calculation is only used to verify the sighting of the moon (i.e. the exact time of the visibilty of the moon). For this reason there may be regional differences in the exact date of Eid, with some Muslims fasting for 29 days and some for 30 days.

Eid ul-Fitr commemorates the end of the month of Ramadan. Fasting is forbidden on this day as it marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. A Muslim is encouraged to rise early and partake of a light snack such as dates before then attending morning prayers with family members in the local community mosque.

Traditions and practices

Common greetings during this three-day festival are the Arabic greeting "Eid mubarak" or "Eid saeed" which, loosely translated, mean "Happy Eid!". In addition, many countries have their own greetings based on local language and traditions.

Muslims are encouraged to dress in their best clothes, new if possible, and to attend a special Eid prayer that is performed in congregation at mosques or open areas like fields, squares etc. When Muslims finish their fast at the last day (29th or 30th Ramadan), they congregate to recite Takbir:

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar,

laa ilaha illallah,

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar

wa li-illahi-alhamd

God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest

There is no deity but God

God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest

and to God goes all praise

The Takbir is recited after confirmation that the moon of Shawwal is sighted on the eve of the last day of Ramadan. It continues until the start of the Eid prayer. Before the Eid prayer begins every Muslim (man, women or child) must pay Zakat al Fitr, an alms for the month of Ramadan. This equates to about 2 kg of a basic foodstuff (wheat, barley, dates, raisins, etc.), or its cash equivalent, and is typically collected at the mosque. This is distributed to needy local Muslims prior to the start of the Eid prayer. It can be given anytime during the month of Ramadan and is often given early, so the recipient can utilise it for Eid purchases. This is distinct from Zakat based on their wealth, which must be paid to a worthy charity.

The Eid prayer (salah) is followed by the khutba (sermon) and then a prayer (dua') asking for forgiveness, mercy and help for the plight of Muslims across the world. It is then customary to embrace the persons sitting on either side of you as well as your relatives, friends and acquaintances.

Muslims spend the day thanking the Creator for all their blessings, as well as just having fun and enjoying themselves. Children are normally given gifts or money. Women (particularly relations) are normally given special gifts by their loved ones. Eid is also the time for reconciliations. Feuds or disputes, especially between family members, are often settled on Eid.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eid -e- Fetr in Iran

In the predominantly Shia culture of Iran, Eid is a highly personal event, and celebrations are often more muted. Called Eideh Fitr by most Iraninans, charity is important on that day. Typically, each Muslim family gives food to those in need. Often meat or ghorbani, which is an expensive food item in Iran, will be given by those in wealthier families to those who have less. Payment of fitra is obligatory for each Muslim. The tradition in many families holds that for each member of your household on the day of Eid, one person outside of your family needs to be fed. Many Iranian families have chelo kabab, which is skewered meat served with white rice, grilled tomatoes, herbs and yogurt on that day. Thanking God for all blessings is top on the list of activities for the day. The day is a national holiday. So most people spend the day at home or visiting family or going for outings in the areas around the big cities.

Eid ul-Fitr in the United States and Canada

Typically, the end of Ramadan is announced via e-mail, postings on websites, or chain phone calls to all members of a Muslim community. Working persons usually attempt to make arrangements for a lighter work day on the days that may possibly be the Eid day, but many North American Muslims are often noted to not be able to take the entire day off.

Typically, a Muslim family in the United States or Canada will wake up very early in the morning and have a small breakfast. Next the family will go to the nearest congregational prayer group to pray. The prayer may be held at the local mosque, a hotel ballroom, local arena or stadium. Often these prayers are held in shifts; for example, the first prayer would at 7 am, the second at 9 am, and the third at 11 am. After prayers, the family members disperse to school or work accordingly, or head home to prepare celebrations if they managed to get the day off. Depending on the nation, Muslims in North America tend to celebrate different traditions, yet most of these are based off of similar customs which are simply followed out differently in each individual country.

Since every family has a different work related situation, some Muslims may attempt to take the entire day off to spend it as a family. A few other families may have to ask for a partial day off, or in many cases, not take the work day off at all due to the importance of their job in terms of the family's fianancial situation or in terms of importance to the company itself, though this does not generally occur due to being denied the time off work as this goes against religious freedom laws in both nations. Because North American Muslims come from all parts of the world, one particular type of food cannot be identified as served on this day. Many Muslim North American families visit the homes of others to congregate on a day of celebration.

If liberty is to be saved, it will not be by the doubters, the men of science or the materialists; it will be by religious conviction, by the faith of individuals, who believe that God wills man to be free but also pure.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Mark Water, The New Encyclopedia of Christian Quotations (Alresford, Hampshire: John Hunt Publishers Ltd, 2000), 379.

26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave7 nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave,1 though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born gunder the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive iadoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Kupira Akisame was the daughter of a shrone maiden and a member of theyakuza. Because of this problematic heritage she was hunted down and her parents both died protecting her. After wandering about for a bit as at 4 years of age she was taken in and trained by an old man named Yufukune. Eventually Kupira's genes ran amok and overnight she changed into a demon. She lacked any sort of self-control and in a fit of rage she murdered her own teacher. Realising what she had done she vowed to keep herself udner control and would eventually end up becoming one of the highest ranking demons to have ever lived.

Later she would meet Proctor Origin through unlikely means and the two decided to stick together. Because of this Kupira eventually wound up passing her knowledge onto Jabberwock.

I have no self control. I tried to just buy the curvy girl because she is may favorite style of these dolls, but I love this yellow pleated skirt and the long dark curly hair. Instant gratification!

The perfect wisdom of our God,

Revealed in all the universe:

All things created by His hand,

And held together at His command.

He knows the mysteries of the seas,

The secrets of the stars are His;

He guides the planets on their way,

And turns the earth through another day.

The matchless wisdom of His ways,

That mark the path of righteousness;

His word a lamp unto my feet,

His Spirit teaching and guiding me.

And oh, the mystery of the cross,

That God should suffer for the lost

So that the fool might shame the wise,

And all the glory might go to Christ!

Oh grant me wisdom from above,

To pray for peace and cling to love,

And teach me humbly to receive

The sun and rain of Your sovereignty.

Each strand of sorrow has a place

Within this tapestry of grace;

So through the trials I choose to say:

“Your perfect will in your perfect way.”

BIBLICAL CONTEXT: Proverbs 16:27-32 NIV

(from biblegateway.com)

27 A scoundrel plots evil,

and on their lips it is like a scorching fire.

28 A perverse person stirs up conflict,

and a gossip separates close friends.

29 A violent person entices their neighbor

and leads them down a path that is not good.

30 Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity;

whoever purses their lips is bent on evil.

31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor;

it is attained in the way of righteousness.

32 Better a patient person than a warrior,

one with self-control than one who takes a city.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 MORE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)

2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)

3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)

4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)

...took all my self control not to buy something

16 HE SAW THAT THERE WAS NO MAN,

AND WONDERED THAT THERE WAS NO ONE TO INTERCEDE;

THEN HIS OWN ARM BROUGHT HIM SALVATION,

AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS UPHELD HIM.

17 HE PUT ON RIGHTEOUSNESS AS A BREASTPLATE,

AND A HELMET OF SALVATION ON HIS HEAD;

HE PUT ON GARMENTS OF VENGEANCE FOR CLOTHING,

AND WRAPPED HIMSELF IN ZEAL AS A CLOAK.

18 ACCORDING TO THEIR DEEDS, SO WILL HE REPAY,

WRATH TO HIS ADVERSARIES, REPAYMENT TO HIS ENEMIES;

TO THE COASTLANDS HE WILL RENDER REPAYMENT.

19 SO THEY SHALL FEAR THE NAME OF THE LORD FROM THE WEST,

AND HIS GLORY FROM THE RISING OF THE SUN;

FOR HE WILL COME LIKE A RUSHING STREAM,

WHICH THE WIND OF THE LORD DRIVES.

20 “AND A REDEEMER WILL COME TO ZION,

TO THOSE IN JACOB WHO TURN FROM TRANSGRESSION,” DECLARES THE LORD.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2001), Is 59:16–20.

59:16 In context (vv. 1–15), the description of sinfulness in the land shows how depraved the nation had become and how far it had strayed from God. Isaiah did not excuse himself from this picture (6:5); “no man,” not even the prophet, was standing up against injustice and ungodliness and interceding for the sinful community. The “man” God looked for, but did not find, could be (1) a righteous king like Hezekiah, (2) some other leader, besides Isaiah, who might respond to His messages through the prophet, or (3) no “man” at all, since the nation’s problems were beyond human solution and God must bring salvation Himself (vv. 16–21).

Merp, this was taken August 10th. Reason number 792 for why I can’t do a 365. XD

I hate my photography class more than I hate eggs. And that’s saying something, considering the fact that the thought of eating eggs makes me want to die.

So, all we’ve been doing is taking stupid pictures in class about the elements and principals of art. Sure, the assignment is fine and dandy and all but we’re not even allowed to leave the classroom (making everyone’s pictures exactly the same), plus the class camera’s are atrocious (I can’t even get a focused picture). So I’ve basically been using the same eight pictures on a flash drive to display at the end of class. And it’s so annoying because everyone’s all,

“ZOMG. DID YOU TAKE THAT PICTURE?”

“DID YOU GET THAT FROM GOOGLE?”

“YOU’RE LIKE A PROFESSIONAL.”

And I’m like (In my head, of course), “It’s just a picture of a leaf, calm yo selves.”

And the other week my teacher basically told me that I had killed a girl in a hurricane just so I could get a picture of her shoes... I won’t get into that story.../aintno1gottimefodat.

And the other day I had a picture up of Mai’s little sister and my teacher was like,

“Are you sure YOU took that?”

And I’m just not going to tell you what I was thinking during all of this because it’s not appropriate.

So I was all, “Erm, of course.”

“Well then who is it of? Hmm?”

AND I TOLD HER.

And she was like, “WELL.”

I won that. But then she was said, “Sadly, it’s not rule of thirds but I haven’t taught you guys that yet so it’s okay.”

AND ALL I WAS THINKING WAS, “I KNOW WHAT RULE OF THIRDS IS. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I WANT TO USE IT IN EVERY PICTURE. IF I WANT TO PUT THE SUBJECT IN THE MIDDLE, I WILL, AND THE RULE OF THIRDS CAN SUCK IT.”

But I just nodded in response because I have self control...

When I think that the fruit of the Spirit is love, I think of Pastor Calvin. He opens his home to us and to anyone who would stop in. He loves his brothers and sisters in Christ, and he loves those who do not know the Savior.

I thank God for His unique love. " But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)" It is with God's own love that He is able to love us in spite of our sin. And, in salvation He shares that great love with us so that we may return it to Him, and extend it to others. As our Lord Jesus said, "37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’"

Pastor Calvin constantly reaches out with this love of God. He loves us as our pastor and he always proclaims the Gospel imperative of repentance and belief to the lost with such gentleness and respect.

For God's love in salvation I give thanks today."

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

3 He restores my soul.

He leads me in paths of righteousness

for his name’s sake.

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

The month of fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Islam uses a lunar calendar—that is, each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. Because the lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than the solar calendar used elsewhere, Islamic holidays "move" each year. In 2015, Ramadan begins at sundown on June 18th.

For more than a billion Muslims around the world—including some 8 million in North America—Ramadan is a "month of blessing" marked by prayer, fasting, and charity. Ramadan focuses on self-sacrifice and devotion to Allah (God).

Why this Month?

Muslims believe that during the month of Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. Around 610 A.D., a caravan trader named Muhammad took to wandering the desert near Mecca (in today's Saudi Arabia) while thinking about his faith. One night a voice called to him from the night sky. It was the angel Gabriel, who told Muhammad he had been chosen to receive the word of Allah. In the days that followed, Muhammad found himself speaking the verses that would be transcribed as the Qur'an.

At many mosques during Ramadan, about one thirtieth of the Qur'an is recited each night in prayers known as tarawih. In this way, by the end of the month the complete scripture will have been recited.

Fasting

Muslims practice sawm, or fasting, for the entire month of Ramadan. This means that they may eat or drink nothing, including water, while the sun shines. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars (duties) of Islam. As with other Islamic duties, all able Muslims take part in sawm from about age twelve.

During Ramadan in the Muslim world, most restaurants are closed during the daylight hours. Families get up early for suhoor, a meal eaten before the sun rises. After the sun sets, the fast is broken with a meal known as iftar. Iftar usually begins with dates and sweet drinks that provide a quick energy boost.

Fasting serves many purposes. While they are hungry and thirsty, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of the poor. Fasting is also an opportunity to practice self-control and to cleanse the body and mind. And in this most sacred month, fasting helps Muslims feel the peace that comes from spiritual devotion as well as kinship with fellow believers.

Eid al-Fitr

Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, which in 2015 occurs on July 17. Literally the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," Eid al-Fitr is one of the two most important Islamic celebrations (the other occurs after the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca). At Eid al-Fitr people dress in their finest clothes, adorn their homes with lights and decorations, give treats to children, and enjoy visits with friends and family.

A sense of generosity and gratitude colors these festivities. Although charity and good deeds are always important in Islam, they have special significance at the end of Ramadan. As the month draws to a close, Muslims are obligated to share their blessings by feeding the poor and making contributions to mosques.
