September 7, 2019 - Our only stop this morning before our arrival in Anchorage was The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center located in Portage, Alaska. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care.

"JB’s (Joe Boxer's) and Patron’s story began in the town of Willow, Alaska. Their mother killed a moose calf in a local resident’s backyard and as result, the man was afraid the bear might try to attack his dog. The man killed the sow*, not knowing she had cubs nearby. Once he saw the two cubs, he called the area wildlife biologist to notify him of the situation. The biologist, who happened to be a former gymnast, daringly climbed to the top of the skinny tree the cubs were hiding in. He was able to grab the smaller male cub by a rear leg, holding on to the tree with the other hand. He climbed down and lowered the cub into a fish net. The second cub was more of a challenge; she was a large female cub and acted aggressively. The biologist climbed to the top of the tree, injected her with a sedative, then grabbed her by the scruff. As he began to climb down, the skinny birch tree began to bend and crack. The tree bent all the way over, delivering the biologist and the cub safely to the ground!

After they were rescued and monitored, JB and Patron came to live at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in 2004. The siblings have since thrived! They can both be found wandering their large wooded enclosure, digging holes in the ground, or catching fish in the stream running through their enclosure! The siblings also enjoy roughhousing with each other and their fellow bear, Hugo.

*In Alaska, killing a bear in defense of life or property is legal.

About Coastal Bears:

JB and Patron are both coastal bears, commonly referred to as brown bears. Coastal bears tend to be larger than their cousins the grizzly bears because they have better access to rich fish runs. They also do not face as cold and brutal of winters as the grizzly bears of interior Alaska do. Bears are omnivores, so they eat deer, moose, and a variety of birds as well as leaves and berries. Brown bears can weigh up to 700 pounds and stand as tall as 9.5 feet!" Previous text from the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center website: www.alaskawildlife.org

When Trixie was young, she was all black. The white fur appeared as she got older.

Here is the story of a little family of feral cats who quickly adapted to life indoors and went on to live long and happy lives.

The story begins in February 1988 with my elderly friend Lily feeding a mother cat and her 8 month old kittens in the garden. Lily and I were worried about their safety because in her area, kids ran around with dogs which they encouraged to attack cats. We managed to catch all four cats. Two were tempted inside Lily’s house with food. She was hiding in one of the rooms and I was hiding in the garden with a long piece of string attached to the door handle. As soon as the cats were in, I pulled the door shut and Lily managed to get them into the bathroom, and from there into carriers. Those two were Mitzi, the mother, and little Pixie. I remember Pixie literally running round the bathroom wall and ending up head first in a small bin!

The black kitten was chasing a moth one evening while Lily was in her garden. The moth flew into the house and Trixie went after it. Lily hastily closed the door!

The final kitten ended up in a neighbour’s kitchen, also tempted in with food, and Lily went in and captured her from under the sink. That one was Sparkle.

Lily would love to have kept them, but she had lots of indoor cats already, ten I think, and she lives in a fairly small rented house. I also had lots of indoor cats, but I’d been lucky enough to buy a large house before house prices rocketed (nowadays I doubt if I could even afford to buy the garage!). So the cats all came to live with me.

Lily was responsible for naming Mitzi and Sparkle, I gave Pixie her name and the then boyfriend named Trixie.

For the first few weeks, the cats lived in a large cage made of fireguards. I got the local Cats Protection to have them spayed as they were used to dealing with ferals. When the cats came back, they were given a room of their own and I started taming them. I got them chasing a cotton reel on a piece of string and stroked their backs each time they ran past me. Sparkle was the first to allow me to handle her, followed by Mitzi and Trixie. Those three eventually became so tame they would allow other people to stroke them, but that did take a while. Pixie never became tame. I suspect that she wasn’t as smart as the others and never understood that I wasn’t going to hurt her.

Once all four had recovered from their spaying operations, and I was sure they were flea and worm free, they moved upstairs to join my other cats in their huge playroom. There were no problems introducing them. I just put lots of food down, and they were all more interested in that than being territorial.

Mitzi and Sparkle were always particularly close. They would insist on eating from the same plate even though they were given a plate each. At the end of 2002 Mitzi was slowing down and looking old. She died peacefully at home on 1 January 2003. Sparkle was devastated. She was walking around making little “mew” noises, it was heartbreaking to watch, and it took her several months to come to terms with losing her mother.

During spring 2003 I had to take the three girls to the vets for check ups. Sparkle and Trixie needed dental work and Pixie had to have her claws trimmed as they were overgrown. I had to give Pixie a sedative in her food so I could catch her. While she was semi-conscious I got my first opportunity to stroke her, and I also gave her a much needed brushing while I had the chance!

Trixie was diagnosed with serious kidney problems and was given medication. She got steadily worse, and had to be put to sleep on 24 December 2003. Pixie and Sparkle both had overactive thyroids and were given Felimazole. At the start of 2004, Pixie had to have teeth removed as they were causing problems, but her kidneys were worse than the vets realised and she didn’t fully recover from the anaesthetic. For three days she could hardly walk, and she allowed me to hold her, then the vet diagnosed complete kidney failure and she was put to sleep on 16 January 2004.

Sparkle did well on the Felimazole, and in spite of having some small strokes from which she recovered completely thanks to being given homeopathic Aconite, she lived happily for another two and a half years. By summer 2006 she was a very frail old lady, but still enjoying food and company.

She died peacefully in her sleep on 22 July 2006.

The Opium Poppy, Papaver somniferum, from which opium and derivative narcotics such as codeine, morphine, noscapine and papaverine are made. The oil-containing seeds are widely used as food. Known as the common garden poppy, they have a wide variety of petal colours, the example above being lilac and purple and of a variety commonly grown commercially in France.

(Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

The wild turkey is our largest game bird and is a streamlined version of its domestic counterpart. Adult hens weigh ten to twelve pounds with gobblers frequently attaining weights of over twenty pounds. Despite their size, their powerful wings can propel them at speeds of over fifty miles per hour. Unless startled, wild turkeys usually prefer to travel and escape danger by walking and running. The head of the wild turkey lacks feathers and is multicolored. The gobbler's head may appear red, blue, white, or some combination thereof, depending on his state of emotional excitement. The feathers of the wild turkey are beautifully iridescent. Gobblers differ from hens in that the breast and body feathers have black rather than brown tips, thus accounting for the overall darker appearance of the males. Adult males and a small percentage of females possess a beard which protrudes from the breast. Although hairlike in appearance, the beard is actually a modified feather. Males also possess a spur on the inside portion of each leg. In females, only a small knob or scale is present. The wild turkey's vocabulary consists of six basic calls: the cluck, the alarm putt, the yelp, the whistle or kee kee of the very young bird, the tree yelp, and the gobble of the mature male. In addition, there are sex and age variations in pitch, tone quality, volume, and inflection.

Early efforts at restoring wild turkey populations by releasing penreared or game farm birds failed miserably. These birds were simply not capable of withstanding the rigors of life in the wild and most quickly died. These efforts may have even been detrimental to the remaining wild birds by introducing diseases to which the wild birds had little or no resistance. For this reason, it is now illegal to release penreared wild turkeys or to allow them to roam freely.

The livetrapping and relocation of wild birds is the only way to insure successful restoration of the wild turkey. Crude traps made of boards and chicken wire were used originally but trapping efforts were not successful at moving large numbers of birds until the advent of the cannon net. Even more advanced rocket nets and sedative drugs are used today to capture the birds.

From 1970 to 1988, over 1,100 birds have been livetrapped and relocated to some sixty different restoration areas in North Carolina. Strict guidelines are followed in evaluating and selecting potential wild turkey restoration areas to insure the success of these projects. Generally, fifteen to twenty birds are released per site at the rate of two to three hens for each gobbler.

The ultimate goal of the wild turkey restoration program is to restore the wild turkey to all suitable habitat. With over two million acres of potential, unoccupied range remaining in North Carolina, restoration will clearly remain the primary objective of the wild turkey project for many more years.

Successful restoration projects have resulted in increased population levels and harvests in all three geographical regions of the state. In the short term, this trend is expected to continue. However, in the long term, each region faces very different and difficult problems. Largescale draining and clearing operations continue to eliminate much of the habitat in the coastal region. While the piedmont region offers the best quality habitat, this region has also shown the most rapid urbanization and industrialization. Habitat loss will also be the main problem facing the wild turkey in the piedmont region. The mountain region, with vast acreages of national forest lands and private lands offering good habitat, provides the greatest opportunity for the wild turkey in North Carolina in the future. The greatest obstacle in the mountains is the lack of adequate brood range.

Lots of people feel that there's nothing they are able to do should they never get a better night's sleep. In actuality, most people that have sleep apnea don't realise it. This post offers you useful information regarding the sleep apnea disorder.

Check with your personal doctor about corrective devices to handle your sleep apnea. You could have a naturally narrow breathing passage, small jaw or recessed chin that may amplify the consequences of sleep apnea. Special mouthpieces will help you to maintain proper alignment when you sleep, letting you rest significantly better.

Employing a wind instrument can be quite a huge aid in dealing with your sleep apnea. Researchers in Germany have suggested that this didgeriddo can improve upper airway muscles. These muscles manage your airway. This is the reason should you play often you will have less sleep apnea issues.

Sleep apnea can be helped by a good diet that brings about your shedding pounds. Few are mindful of precisely how significantly bad dietary choices could affect a sleep apnea condition. Those who tend not to eat well, or are overweight, may suffer from sleep apnea.

In an attempt to get yourself a restful night of sleep, sleep in your corner if at all possible. When sleeping on the back, throat and tongue muscles are more likely to block your airway. Try to fall asleep within a side position, and find out if this relieves your sleep apnea tonight.

Sleeping pills along with other drugs are not good solutions should you be having difficulty sleeping. The muscles inside your throat relax a lot of when using a sedative like sleeping pills, (or alcohol) along with your airway is more prone to collapse while asleep. Taking sleeping pills could have a negative influence on other health issues those with sleep apnea may go through. Check if your medical professional knows for any sleeping medication that doesn't cause respiratory depression.

If exhaustion has haunted you for some time, it could be smart to speak with your doctor relating to this. There is little point in needless suffering simply because you did not bother getting formally checked out. Knowledge needs to be openly shared, and in case you don't trust this info, confirm it using a physician. treatmentforsleepapnea.org/treatment-sleep-apnea-children/

Popular Herbal Tea and How to Steep Them

Popular Herbal Tea and How to Steep Them

Herbal tea is simply infusions of herbs, spices, fruits, or flowers in water. They do not actually contain any tea leaves unless they are blended with it. In fact, many countries, they cannot be classified as teas and have to be sold under the name ‘tisane’. Herbal teas can be enjoyed as a hot or chilled beverage any time of the day. They make a low calorie, relaxing drink, with plenty of health benefits.

Lavender:

The lavender plant is recognized around the world as a healing herb. A refreshing fragrance along with therapeutic properties, make this herb a part of many traditional treatments. Romans scented their baths with it and the Tibetans make an edible butter with it to treat nervous disorders. The soothing fragrance helps overcome restlessness and difficulty in sleeping as well as for relieving anxiety. It is a natural antiseptic and has astringent properties.

Rose:

Simply the fragrance of this light herbal tea is enough to calm a tired mind! Light and fragrant like a delicate perfume, the infusion is soothing, soft and refreshing. These intensely fragrant and beautiful rose petals release an almost euphoric aroma and flavor. It helps in building a strong immune system, strengthening the digestive system and in detoxification.

Hibiscus:

Hibiscus tea is a delightful tea made from the dried petals of the hibiscus flowers. Hibiscus is packed with antioxidants, can help with weight loss, can relieve stress, and can prevent bladder infections. A relaxing and refreshing tea, it is perfect both as a hot and an iced tea.

Lemongrass:

Lemongrass is a cooling, clear, and crisp herbal tea with a distinctive, spicy, lemony aroma. It has a zesty flavor reminiscent of lemon. Add it as a complementing flavor to your favorite tea blend, or drink it on its own. Either way, you can reap its medicinal properties and its various health benefits like stress reduction, better digestion, and to relieve fatigue.

Peppermint:

Our whole Peppermint leaf infusion is striking and strong, with a fantastically fresh and cleansing minty flavor. Great both as a hot and iced tea, peppermint helps soothe an upset stomach, and can also help clear out a cold. If you have dry or dull skin, drinking peppermint tea can help your skin to rid itself of dead skin cells and get you glowing.

Jasmine:

Jasmine tea is consumed in China, where it is called jasmine-flower tea. Jasminum sambac flowers are also used to make jasmine tea, which often has a base of green tea or white tea, but sometimes an Oolong base is used. Flowers and tea are “mated” in machines that control temperature and humidity. It takes four hours or so for the tea to absorb the fragrance and flavor of the jasmine blossoms, and for the highest grades, this process may be repeated as many as seven times.

To steep these herbal teas, start with recently boiled water in a container of your choice. Choose a kettle, teapot, or any other utensil with a lid. Make sure the utensil is glass, ceramic, clay, or stainless steel. In the hot water, add about a teaspoon of the herb for each cup is made. Cover and allow the tea to steep for 3-5 minutes depending on how strong you want the taste. Once done, serve immediately

Note:

The herbs should never be added to the water while it is still boiling. Always remove the water from the stovetop before adding any herbs

Get Better Sleep with these Teas

There are a large number of people that suffer from sleep problems or insomnia. Difficulty in sleeping, waking up at irregular times through the night, and an uneven sleep cycle may all be as a result of stress, poor diet, or a symptom of an underlying disease. Whatever be the cause, sleeplessness is a worry one can do without. While treating the main cause of insomnia should be a priority, in the meantime, one can try certain cures for the sleeplessness.

Some teas have relaxing properties that help calm the nerves, and get you a good night’s rest. The past few years have brought to light the scientific research to back the effectiveness of drinking herbal tea for insomnia. Although the research is still not conclusive, a cup of tea before bedtime will do more good than harm!

In case you are unsure which teas to pick, here are the basic herbal teas that are known for their sleep-inducing qualities:

Chamomile:

Chamomile tea is, of course, the superstar of night time teas. There’s little evidence that it has any sedative effects, yet millions of people continue to drink it before going to bed. It has relaxing properties and a cup of chamomile tea can calm you down enough for a night’s rest. You can easily make it yourself by drying out the flowers and brewing them. And it’s also found in most brands of bedtime tea.

Valerian:

Valerian is one of the few herbs which have actually been found by researchers to have sedative properties. It’s been used for centuries to help with sleep and also anxiety. Made from the root of the flower, it may take a couple of weeks of regular drinking before taking effect.

Lavender:

Whilst Chamomile and Valerian reign supreme in the bedtime tea category, they aren’t alone. Another plant sometimes put into the mix is Lavender, which is thought to have relaxing and anti-stress properties.

Lemon balm:

This lemony herb has long been used as a relaxant for many years. It is added to all teas that are sold in the market as a night time tea. Although not as popular as chamomile or lavender, lemon balm is as effective in inducing sleep.

St John’s Wort:

St John’s Wort is most commonly used as a natural anti-depressant but has also been found to help with anxiety. Since worry and stress are common reasons why people suffer from insomnia, it could be that it can help promote sleep by reducing the nightly worries. Some precautions need to be taken before this tea can be consumed as it is not suitable for everybody and consulting a physician would be best before investing in this tea.

Peppermint:

More often used in teas that energizing or help with stomach problems, peppermint is lesser known for its calming properties. It’s thought to help calm your internal systems, and with that your mind.

Kava Kava:

A risky plant when it comes to consumption, kava kava can be dangerous for people who are allergic or suffer from other ailments. Consult your physician before consuming this tea.

Chinese herbs:

Chinese medicine is a complex world. There are some herbs typically used to help promote sleep:

 Sour Date Seed

 Poria Paradis

 Arborvitae Seed

 Schizandra Fruit

And there are some formulas created to reflect the kind of sleep problems you might have. They tend to be connected to a body part as well. For example, problems falling asleep may be connected to the heart and so Chinese medicine would look at ways to restore balance to that organ.

Young gangsters in Heideveld, Cape Town, RSA // Young gangster smoking Mandrax (methaqualone) and Marijuana in a bottleneck. Initially marketed as a sedative or sleeping tablet by the French pharmaceutical giant Roussell Laboratories, it turned out to be highly addictive and banned in 1977. Sold illegally in South Africa, it is smoked in conjunction with Marijuana and it is the most widely used drug in the Western Cape, sold at about 30 Rands (about 3 UK pounds) per tablet. It is crushed and smoked in pipes or bottlenecks (aka ‘white pipe’). It makes the user feel relaxed, clam and peaceful and everything looks perfect, while turning aggressive when the effect is wearing off. It requires increased usage in order to achieve the same effects and depression feelings are not uncommon with use. According to the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre (CTDCC) it is a really difficult habit to break in impoverished communities where young unemployed are left on their own with no government help or other activities apart from crime and gansgterism. Social injustice, weakened family links and a feeling of ‘not-belonging’ are also causes of problems upon the ‘coloured’ communities in South Africa. © Alessandro Masi .

I wish more people understood exactly what was going on in my head. Its strange to feel so alone in a room full of friends. All of your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse. Too much reassurance magnifies the doubt.

R.I.P. Old Hickory v.2 Howard.

He couldn't cleanse the CO2 from his body and it acted like a sedative and he just went to sleep.

Italian postcard by G.B. Falci Editore, Milano, no. 603. Photo: Metro Goldwyn Films. Marion Davies in Beverly of Graustark (Sidney Franklin, 1926).

Marion Davies (1897-1961) was one of the great comedic actresses of the silent era. She starred in nearly four dozen films between 1917 and 1937.

Marion Davies was born Marion Cecelia Douras in the borough of Brooklyn, New York in 1897. She had been bitten by the show biz bug early as she watched her sisters perform in local stage productions. She wanted to do the same. As Marion got older, she tried out for various school plays and did fairly well. Once her formal education had ended, Marion began her career as a chorus girl in New York City, first in the Pony Follies and eventually in the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Her stage name came when she and her family passed the Davies Insurance Building. One of her sisters called out "Davies!!! That shall be my stage name," and the whole family took on that name. Marion wanted more than to dance. Acting, to her, was the epitome of show business and she aimed her sights in that direction. She had met newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and went to live with him at his San Simeon castle. They stayed together for over 30 years, while Hearst’s wife Millicent resided in New York. Millicent would not grant him a divorce so that he could marry Davies. San Simeon is a spectacular and elaborate mansion, which now stands as a California landmark. At San Simeon, the couple threw elaborate parties, which were frequented by all of the top names in Hollywood and other celebrities including the mayor of New York City, President Calvin Coolidge and Charles Lindbergh. When she was 20, Marion made her first film, Runaway Romany (George W. Lederer, 1917). Written by Marion and directed by her brother-in-law, the film wasn't exactly a box-office smash, but for Marion, it was a start and a stepping stone to bigger things. The following year Marion starred in The Burden of Proof (John G. Adolfi, Julius Steger, 1918) and Cecilia of the Pink Roses (Julius Steger, 1918). Hearst backed the latter film. Because of Hearst's newspaper empire, Marion would be promoted as no actress before her. She appeared in numerous films over the next few years, including the superior comedy Getting Mary Married (Allan Dwan, 1919) with Norman Kerry, the suspenseful The Cinema Murder (George D. Baker, 1919) and the drama The Restless Sex (Leon D'Usseau, Robert Z. Leonard, 1920) with Carlyle Blackwell.

In 1922, Marion Davies appeared as Mary Tudor in the historical romantic epic, When Knighthood Was in Flower (Robert G. Vignola, 1922). It was a film into which Hearst poured millions of dollars as a showcase for her. Although Marion didn't normally appear in period pieces, she turned in a wonderful performance and the film became a box office hit. Marion remained busy, one of the staples in movie houses around the country. At the end of the twenties, it was obvious that sound films were about to replace silent films. Marion was nervous because she had a stutter when she became excited and worried she wouldn't make a successful transition to the new medium, but she was a true professional who had no problem with the change. Time after time, film after film, Marion turned in masterful performances. Her best films were the comedies The Patsy (1928) also with Marie Dressler, and Show People (1929) with William Haines, both directed by King Vidor. In 1930, two of her better films were Not So Dumb (King Vidor, 1930) and The Florodora Girl (Harry Beaumont, 1930), with Lawrence Grant. By the early 1930s, Marion had lost her box office appeal and the downward slide began. Hearst tried to push MGM executives to hire Marion for the role of Elizabeth Barrett in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (Sidney Franklin, 1934). Louis B. Mayer had other ideas and hired producer Irving Thalberg's wife Norma Shearer instead. Hearst reacted by pulling his newspaper support for MGM without much impact. By the late 1930s Hearst was suffering financial reversals and it was Marion who bailed him out by selling off $1 million of her jewelry. Hearst's financial problems also spelt the end of her career. Although she had made the transition to sound, other stars fared better and her roles became fewer and further between. In 1937, a 40-year-old Marion filmed her last movie, Ever Since Eve (Lloyd Bacon, 1937) with Robert Montgomery. Out of films and with the intense pressures of her relationship with Hearst, Marion turned more and more to alcohol. Despite those problems, Marion was a very sharp and savvy businesswoman. When Hearst lay dying in 1951 at age 88, Davies was given a sedative by his lawyer. When she awoke several hours later, she discovered that Hearst had passed away and that his associates had removed his body as well as all his belongings and any trace that he had lived there with her. His family had a big formal funeral for him in San Francisco, from which she was banned. Later, Marion married for the first time at the age of 54, to Horace Brown. The union would last until she died of cancer in 1961 in Los Angeles, California. She was 64 years old. Upon Marion’s niece Patricia Van Cleve Lake's death, it was revealed she had been the love child of Davies and Hearst. The love affair of Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst was mirrored in the films Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941), RKO 281 (Benjamin Ross, 1999), and The Cat's Meow (Peter Bogdanovich, 2001). In Citizen Kane (1941), the title character's second wife (played by Dorothy Comingore—an untalented singer whom he tries to promote—was widely assumed to be based on Davies. But many commentators, including Citizen Kane writer/director Orson Welles himself, have defended Davies' record as a gifted actress, to whom Hearst's patronage did more harm than good.

Today we took a walk round the Häuselberg, a hill in Leoben just to look, if the “Küchenschellen” (pasque flowers) are already blooming. And look, they are out already! These are one of my favourite flowers and they are growing early in spring on the southern side of this hill, where the sun is shining (...if she shines...) the whole day into the impressive rock face. The whole hill is a conservation area and this flower is a protected species. It is forbidden to pick it.

----------------------------------------------------------

Natur = “Das große Bilderbuch, das der liebe Gott uns draußen aufgeschlagen hat.“

(Joseph von Eichendorff, 1788-1857, dt. Dichter)

If you want to know more about this fascinating flower, here some quotes frome wikipedia:

--------------------------------------------------------

Pasque flower

A pasque flower is one of about 33 species of herbaceous perennials native to meadows and prairies of North America, Europe, and Asia, valued for their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads. The pasqueflower is also commonly known as the prairie crocus, wind flower, Easter Flower, and meadow anemone.

Genus

Different varieties of the Pasque flower are the floral emblems of various territories. Pulsatilla vulgaris is the County flower for both Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Pulsatilla hirsutissima is the state flower of South Dakota and the provincial flower of Manitoba. Pasque refers to Easter (Passover), since the flower blooms early in spring.

Use and toxicity

Pasque flower is highly toxic, and produces cardiogenic toxins and oxytoxins which slow the heart in humans. It has been used as a medicine by Native Americans for centuries. Blackfoot Indians used Pasque Flower to induce abortions and childbirth. Extracts of Pulsatilla have been used in an effort to treat reproductive problems such as premenstrual syndrome and epididymitis. Additional applications of plant extracts include uses as a sedative and for treating coughs. It is used as an initial ingredient in homeopathic remedies, which don't have toxic effects of other remedies because the ingredients are diluted with water until no molecules of the initial substance can be found in a typical quantity.

White baneberry, also called doll's eyes (Actaea pachypoda). It is a perennial, native to eastern North America. In cultivation it requires part to full shade, rich loamy soil, and regular water with good drainage to reproduce its native habitat. We have had good luck transplanting Doll's Eyes from the forest to the gardens of Distant Hill. Come late summer, the flowers will transform themselves into large white ‘dolls’s eyes’.

Note: Not a plant for families with young children. All parts of the plant are considered poisonous to humans. The berries contain cardiogenic toxins which can have an immediate sedative effect on human cardiac muscle tissue, and are the most poisonous part of the plant.

Lasik is not the only option!

Refraction correction alternatives to LASIK eye surgery

If your Michigan ophthalmologist told you that you are not an ideal candidate for LASIK surgery, do not lose hope, there are other alternatives that can reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The Yaldo eye center is one of the best lasik eye surgery Michigan clinics.

There are several reasons why a LASIK doctor may determine that you are not an ideal candidate for the procedure. For example, some patients have very thin corneas, severe refractive errors or other conditions that prevent them from undergoing LASIK. However, these patients may consider two other procedures: implantable contact lenses (ICL) and refractive lens exchange (RLE).

Implantable contact lenses (ICL)

Implantable contact lenses (ICL) correct vision in a manner very similar to external contact lenses, except for the fact that ICLs are placed inside the eye, improving vision permanently. ICLs are also similar to intraocular lenses that are used during cataract surgery to replace the lens. However, during surgery, the lens stays in the eye and works together with the implanted lens to correct vision. Implantable contact lenses provide an option to permanently correct vision for those who are not candidates for laser vision correction. Find a good Michigan laser eye surgery clinic can be challenging, the Yaldo eye center is one of your best options when it comes lasik eye surgery in Michigan.

Implantable contact lenses are inserted into the cornea through a small incision and placed behind the iris and in front of the lens. These thin flexible lenses can be an alternative to LASIK surgery and are used to correct disorders that laser surgery may not correct, such as extreme myopia. The ICL procedure is painless and has a success rate of 95%. The improvement in vision is perceived on the same day of the surgery, and the patients heal completely one month after lasik eye surgery Michigan.

Types of ICL

The main difference in implantable contact lenses is the type of material used for each lens. Currently, there are only two types of ICL approved for use in the United States: Verisyse is made with a type of acrylic called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and Visian ICL is the result of a combination of collagen and copolymer called Collamer® created by STAAR® surgical.

Process

One or two weeks before inserting the contact lenses, the surgeon uses a laser to make two openings near the edge of each iris. This prevents the increase in intraocular pressure during lens insertion.

The lenses are inserted through a small incision made in the cornea of each eye. Once inside the eye, the doctor must ensure that the lenses remain in place. The ICL is undetectable for the user and viewers.

During both procedures, topical anesthesia is placed in the eyes to avoid discomfort. The ophthalmologist can also administer a sedative to keep the patient relaxed.

General requirements of the ICL

There are some general requirements to be a good candidate for ICL. Among the people who benefit most with implantable contact lenses are those who:

If you are over 21 years old (it is usually recommended that patients over 45 years of age do not undergo the ICL procedure)

Have moderate or severe myopia (generally, implantable contact lenses can correct up to -20D for myopia)

Do not have astigmatism or have mild astigmatism (implantable contact lenses that are approved can treat up to 2.5 diopters of astigmatism)

Currently not pregnant or breastfeeding

Have the anterior chamber of the eye with the proper depth. The ophthalmologist will determine the depth of the camera with a comprehensive eye test),

Are not eligible for LASIK (patients with dry eye, severe myopia, thin corneas, and other contraindications to LASIK may be candidates for implantable contact lenses.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Although Refractive Lens Exchange can correct nearsightedness, it is generally not recommended when ICLs are an option. The best candidates for RLE are usually people with presbyopia, a situation in which the lens loses its ability to focus due to its reduced elasticity, which generates difficulties for close vision. Therefore, in a large number of cases, it is logical to change the lens for a sophisticated artificial intraocular lens.

During the RLE procedure, the surgeon first applies topical anesthesia to the eyes and then makes a small incision in the edge of the cornea. The natural crystalline lens inside the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial, fitted intraocular lens. The recovery is usually quick and without complications. If you are looking for a Michigan laser eye surgery clinic or Michigan eye surgery doctor. Look no further than the Yaldo eye center for your lasik eye surgery Michigan needs.

Stop Snoring and Sleep Apnea Program Reviews - Is it Really? Does It really help to snore relief? Here's Truth! Download Now!

We've all heard snoring at one point or another. Whether it's coming from us or from a loved one, it's a cacophony of noises that affect The Stop Snoring and Sleep Apnea Program Reviews everyone's sleep. Don't despair, snoring can be controlled or eliminated. Try using the tips in the article below to treat the snoring issues.

Try changing your sleeping position to cease snoring. Gravity is the main cause of snoring when laying on your back. Gravity pulls on the muscles at the front of the throat causing airways to narrow. To keep your airways open, try sleeping on your side.

If you are a snorer, there's a chance that you are unaware of it. Always take into account your partner, as they probably have to deal with it throughout the night, so don't get angry if they complain about your snoring. This is always a good time to talk to each other and try to figure out a solution.

If you are over weight, snoring might be a problem. To make that problem stop, lose the excess pounds. Extra weight is stored in many different areas on your body, including in your neck. The fat stored in your neck region causes the throat to constrict, which often results in snoring. When you take off those extra pounds, the snoring will often come to an end.

If you snore while you are pregnant, make a trip to the doctor immediately. Many pregnant women may begin snoring during their pregnancy, and this is caused from excess pressure, but you need to make sure your snoring doesn't deprive the baby of oxygen. Try seeing your doctor so that they can rule this life-threatening issue out.

Don't drink alcoholic beverages before going to bed. The very reason you might be tempted to have a nighttime drink, the fact that you want to relax, can cause you to snore. When your muscles relax because of the alcohol, so do your air passages. As your air passages become restricted, you snore.

Do not sleep on your back, instead try sleeping on your side. If sleeping on your side is not natural, you can try to remedy the problem. Tie a The Stop Snoring and Sleep Apnea Program pdf tennis ball to your waist, positioned against your back. The discomfort caused by rolling onto the ball can keep you on your side.

To keep yourself from snoring, eat your largest meal of the day at least a few hours before bed. If you hop into bed with a full stomach, it will apply pressure to your diaphragm, pushing it up and narrowing your air passageways -- and making you snore. Eat earlier so you can digest your food -- and not snore.

If you are prone to snoring, then be careful about what you consume immediately before you go to bed. Many foods and beverages contain mild sedatives, which can cause the muscles located in your throat to relax too much. This will cause them to be extremely relaxed, which causes snoring as air passes through. Water is the best choice when trying to stay hydrated throughout the night.

Another option for snorers with a sweet tooth, is to take a spoonful of honey before bedtime. It is not known why honey seems to work, but many people can testify about the ability of honey to reduce snoring. That said, honey's many other well-documented health benefits make it a safe option.

If your snoring stops intermittently during the night, and you wake up gasping for a breath, you should make an appointment to see your doctor. This is because you may have sleep apnea, which is a serious disorder. If someone tells you that this is your sleep pattern, a sleep study may need to be conducted on you to confirm this condition.

If you are dedicated to ridding your nights of snoring, a tennis ball can really come in handy. You can either sew a pocket on the back of your shirt and place the ball into that or put it into a sock and pin it to the back of your shirt. The ball will remind you to not lay on your back, even when you sleep. Once you develop a habit of sleeping on one side, the tennis ball can be removed.

Don't eat a large meal right before going to bed for the night. Doing so will cause your full stomach to push up on your diaphragm. This can snoring obstruct your airways, limit your breathing and keep you from being able to take full, deep breaths which leads to snoring.

One of the oldest methods to prevent snoring is the use of a chin strap. Their design has changed over the years so that the new ones are quite comfortable. They keep your mouth from opening at night so that are not breathing through your mouth. Thus, you must breathe through your nose, which keeps you from snoring.

You may already know that excess alcohol intake and sleeping pills can cause snoring. However, there are other substances that can put you at risk of nocturnal noise-making. Tranquilizers are a common culprit as well as antihistamines. Antihistamines can be great for allergy control, but can cause the same throat tissue relaxation as alcohol and sleeping pills that can exacerbate snoring.

A great tip for those of you who suffer from snoring is to stay away from sleeping pills. Sleeping pills may seem like a possible solution to stop your snoring and get a better nights sleep, but they can actually increase the likelihood of your snoring since your passageway muscles are overly relaxed.

Consider elevating your head in order to eliminate some pressure off your airways. This assists you in your breathing, which will decrease your snoring. You could also raise your bed's head by placing blocks underneath the bed posts. Otherwise, you could just prop up your entire whole body with some pillows.

As previously stated, snoring is something we've all heard and it's annoying sounds are unmistakable. They can really ruin your sleep, whether it's coming from you or from someone else. Using the tips in the article above can help you find the causes of the snoring so that everyone can rest better.

Dazy is buckled into the chair. As she hears Temp speak, she fights the restraints. Her legs kicking up in an attempt to push back Temp or Lithia. She mrowls much more loudly then she had in the past few days. The back of her neck tingles, and her fur would lift... if she had fur. Her mrowl then turns into a vicious sounding hiss.

Lithia Nightfire ignored the noises from the woman, and backed up while Temp began her work. "I believe you have everything you need here Doctor? I will take my leave for now. I have much work to perform upstairs to ready for my appointment later." She glances at the hybrid before looking to Temp with a small nod, and turns to head to the elevator.

tempestual Parkin shakes her head sadly "it is not wise to resist dr nightfire....she is not as gentle as myself. Now, bailey, you are about to undergo a highly complex procedure" As she speaks, first one, then the other two injections would be pressed into the other feline's bloodstream. "you have been injected with three chemicals, the first being a chemical specific to you, to your dna, designed to alter and block the gene that codes for your pink fur. The second, the second is slower acting, for the gene we are targeting, it has a sister gene as it were. Blocking the origional destabilises the sister.....or at least this is a simple analogy. This sister would be the gene coding for your eye colour. Currently it is connected, causing them to both code for the same colour, we shall be breaking this connection. Over the next couple of weeks, the pink coulor will drain from your eyes, revealing what they would truly be without this gene's presence. And yes Dr nightfire, thank you for your assistance, i appreciate it."

Dazy bangs her head against the back of the chair. All of those words swirl around in her head. "I fucking hate you...." she manages to spit out. "I hate what you stand for, and I hate that you are playing God." She's quite literally stuck. She begins to pray silently.

tempestual Parkin smiles softly, her eyes clouding with what would genuinely appear to be pain and regret. "i know.....and sometimes....well, i often hate myself. But i do what is necessary and try to do what good i can to make up for the rest. Now, the buzzing your hearing, that is a wide spreading lazer. This is designed with a specific purpose in mind. It is to quite literally burn away the top layer of your skin. The third chemical, it is deisgned again with you specifically in mind, it will propogate and encourage growth and repair of your skin. It would be like a trailer moving after a car. As each part is burned away, a new part of skin is generated, following after the laser. However....and this is the part that is significant, it does so using the dna....of which the colour gene is now blocked. You will not only be a blank canvas, but your fur will be inhibited, stunted in its growth. And if any does grow, it will no longer be pink, most likely a flesh-cloured tan."

Dazy tries one more time to yank against her restraints, but her body is simply too weak. Where is the Lord when you need him? Tears begin to stream down the side of her naked face. She merely shakes her head violently.

tempestual Parkin frowns lightly, her hand once more resting upon the other feline's head, her purr suffused with regret and despondancy. "i'm truly sorry bailey......you will be asleep for this, i will see you in a couple of hours." A sedtaive would then be injected, allowing the laser procedure to run seamlessly, as she moves off to prepare both the equipment and bailey herself for it.

Bailey Dazy finishes her silent prayer as the sedatives take affect.

Common names include pasque flower (or pasqueflower), wind flower, prairie crocus, Easter flower, and meadow anemone. Several species are valued ornamentals because of their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads. The showy part of the flower consists of sepals, not petals.

Extracts of Pulsatilla have been used to treat reproductive problems such as premenstrual syndrome and epididymitis. Additional applications of plant extracts include uses as a sedative and for treating coughs. It has been used as a medicine by Native Americans for centuries. Blackfoot Indians used it to induce abortions and childbirth. Pulsatilla should not be taken during pregnancy nor during lactation. Pulsatilla is highly toxic, and produces cardiogenic toxins and oxytoxins which slow the heart in humans. Excess use can lead to diarrhea, vomiting and convulsions, hypotension and coma.

It is also used as an initial ingredient in homeopathic remedies. The plant was used medicinally during ancient times for eye ailments. During the 19th century, the eclectic physicians and contemporaries of Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy , noted pulsatilla's use in the treatment of melancholy, swelling of the knees, and nervous system disorders. In ancient times it was used as an external remedy for ulcers and eye inflammation.

[Two vials of black market GHB mixed with strawberry flavoring from Portugal .]

GHB (gammahydroxybutrate) and GBL (gammabutyrolactone), are closely related, dangerous drugs with similar sedative and anesthetic effects.

GBL is converted to GHB shortly after entering the body. Both produce a feeling of euphoria and can reduce inhibitions and cause sleepiness.

But both can kill and are particularly dangerous when used with alcohol and other depressant or sedative substances.

The effect of the fresh herb is of a mild analgesic, cholagogic, antimicrobial, oncostatic and central nervous system sedative. In animal tests, celandine is shown to be cytostatic. An immune stimulating effect has also been noted. Some studies show that the alkaloid extraction can have the same effects. The alkaloids are known to cause immobilization in mice after being taken orally or injected. The alkaloids cause limpness and tone reduction of smooth muscle in rabbits. The alkaloids are also noted to stimulate the heart and lungs of frogs, cats and dogs, raising the blood pressure and widening the arteries.

The latex could be employed as a caustic for healing small open wounds. Early studies of celandine showed that it causes contact dermatitis and eye irritation, particularly from contact with the poisonous red to yellow latex sap of the stem. This effect has not been observed in animal studies; no inflammation was observed in rabbit eye tests. The latex can leave a non-permanent stain. Stains on skin of the fingers are sometimes reported to cause eye irritation after rubbing the eyes or handling contact lenses. When any part of the plant causes eye irritation, wash it out with clear water and when needed seek medical help. The latex is also known to stain clothes.

The characteristic latex also contains proteolytic enzymes and the phytocystatin chelidostatin, a cysteine protease inhibitor. These co-constituents could explain the topical use of greater celandine against warts and moles.

This poor Opium Poppy flower perfectly sums up our soggy British summer. Rain, rain, rain. More rain today and just a few days to go until the Olympics start.

Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemon grass, is a tropical plant native to South Asia and introduced to many tropical regions.

Cymbopogon citratus is often sold in stem form. While it can be grown in warmer temperate regions, such as the UK, it is not hardy to frost.

CULINARY USES

Cymbopogon citratus is abundant in the Philippines and Indonesia where it is known as tanglad or sereh. Its fragrant leaves are traditionally used in cooking, particularly for lechon and roasted chicken.

The dried leaves can also be brewed into a tea, either alone or as a flavoring in other teas, imparting a flavor reminiscent of lemon juice but with a mild sweetness without significant sourness or tartness.

MEDICINAL USES

The leaves of Cymbopogon citratus have been used in traditional medicine and are often found in herbal supplements and teas.

In the folk medicine of Brazil, it is believed to have anxiolytic, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant properties.

In traditional medicine of India the leaves of the plant are used as stimulant, sudorific, antiperiodic, and anticatarrhal, while the essential oil is used as carminative, depressant, analgesic, antipyretic, antibacterial, and antifungal agent.

Laboratory studies have shown cytoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, as well as antifungal properties (though Cymbopogon martinii was found to be more effective in that study).

Citronellol is an essential oil constituent from Cymbopogon citratus, Cymbopogon winterianus, and Lippia alba. Citronellol has been shown to lower blood pressure in rats by a direct effect on the vascular smooth muscle leading to vasodilation. In a small, randomized, controlled trial, an infusion made from C. citratus was used as an inexpensive remedy for the treatment of oral thrush in HIV/AIDS patients.

Lemon grass oil contains 65-85% citral in addition to myrcene, citronella, citronellol, and geraniol. Hydrosteam distillation, condensation, and cooling can be used to separate the oil from the water. The hydrosol, as a by-product of the distillation process, is used for the production of skin care products such as lotions, creams, and facial cleansers. The main ingredients in these products are lemon grass oil and "negros oil" (mixture of lemon grass oil with virgin coconut oil) used in aromatherapy.

PHARMACOLOGY

One low-dose study found no effect of Cymbopogon citratus essential oils on humans. However, subsequent research has demonstrated that the plant's essential oil enhances GABA-ergic neurotranssmision at sufficient doses (with an anxiolytic threshold dose of 10 mg/kg) via positive allosteric agonism in the same manner as benzodiazepines (ex. diazepam) which are used clinically as anxiolytics, sedative/hypnotics, muscle relaxants, and anticonvulsants. Despite the observed pharmacological activity, the average adult male would require 600–800 mg of the pure essential oil to achieve a clinically significant reduction in anxiety. Most commercial supplements contain doses far below the threshold dose which suggests that the majority of lemongrass supplements exert their anxiolytic benefits either primarily or entirely through the induction of the placebo effect. As the essential oil was demonstrated to act synergistically with other GABA-ergics (even in sub-therapeutic doses) and likely also potentiates anxiolytics of other mechanisms (as predicted by the mechanics of benzodiazepines), the possibility of pharmacologically-induced anxiolysis cannot be eliminated when formulations containing a sub-therapeutic lemongrass dosage also contain other anxiolytic herbs/chemicals.

EFFECT ON INSECTS

Beekeepers sometimes use lemon grass oil in swarm traps to attract swarms. Lemon grass oil has also been tested for its ability to repel the pestilent stable fly, which bite domestic animals.
