Opium Poppy, Papaver somniferum.

These come up in our garden every year. In 2012 they are a bit later than usual.

Info from Wikipedia:-

Opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the species of plant from which opium and poppy seeds are extracted. Opium is the source of many opiates, including morphine, thebaine, codeine, papaverine, and noscapine. The Latin botanical name means the "sleep-bringing poppy", referring to the sedative properties of some of these opiates.

The poppy is the only species of Papaveraceae that is an agricultural crop grown on a large scale. Other species, Papaver rhoeas and Papaver argemone, are important agricultural weeds, and may be mistaken for the crop.

The plant itself is also valuable for ornamental purposes, and has been known as the "common garden poppy", referencing all the group of poppy plants.

Poppy seeds of Papaver somniferum are an important food item and the source of poppyseed oil, a healthy edible oil that has many uses. It is widely grown as an ornamental flower throughout Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.

Young gangsters in Heideveld, Cape Town, RSA // A pill of Mandrax (methaqualone). Initially marketed as a sedative or sleeping tablet by the French pharmaceutical giant Roussell Laboratories, it turned out to be highly addictive and banned in 1977. Sold illegally in South Africa, it is smoked in conjunction with Marijuana and it is the most widely used drug in the Western Cape, sold at about 30 Rands (about 3 UK pounds) per tablet. It is crushed and smoked in pipes or bottlenecks (aka ‘white pipe’). It makes the user feel relaxed, clam and peaceful and everything looks perfect, while turning aggressive when the effect is wearing off. It requires increased usage in order to achieve the same effects and depression feelings are not uncommon with use. According to the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre (CTDCC) it is a really difficult habit to break in impoverished communities where young unemployed are left on their own with no government help or other activities apart from crime and gansgterism. Social injustice, weakened family links and a feeling of ‘not-belonging’ are also causes of problems upon the ‘coloured’ communities in South Africa. © Alessandro Masi .

Sakae Naa is sometimes presented as an alternative to kratom, although I found it to be rather weak in comparison. It produced a mild dreamy sedation, which was slightly stronger when smoked (as opposed to being consumed as a tea). I should note that I sense, albeit without firm evidence, that the anxiolytic aura it produced might be enhanced via fresher leaves or if taken in a more authentic setting.

This post is subtitled 'Poppies and PDQ' and is slightly retrospective as I am about 12 hours behind schedule at the moment!

So the practical work I was doing yesterday speaks for itself - it's poppies, lots of them! Like their naturally occurring version, these can be an effective sedative and are soothing to make while my mind is crowded with other things.

As you can imagine, in these last few days everything gets a little taut and the ongoing saga of the SAT PDQ machine has nearly driven the chairman of Saltaire Inspired to opiates himself! We are hoping so hard to have the card machine for the weekend but it has gone wrong and wrong again. It's something we had in mind right from post-event last May and honestly never thought it would be so difficult an achievement. The banks seem to consider an event like ours high risk and range from apprehensive to downright in incredulous at the thought of taking the gig!

As an organisation, implementing a procedure for a payment method we have never used before, with volunteers, multiple venues and mobile phones has presented pitfalls galore and taken a great deal of planning to overcome. This planning has been expertly done by people with infinitely more mental capacity than myself. I actually feel rather dizzy at the sight of the process maps and bewuildered when yet another worst case scenario presents itself. During the meeting last night I actually requested this mug for my tea as I first read it as *Queen of f*****g everything....UP!*. Suffice to say, if the PDQ machine has not arrived in time for the weekend then much more bad language will ensue!

Pass the Laudenum would you darling? I'm getting one of my heads!

I came across this group of about 10 Amanita Muscaria Mushrooms at work today ....so cool :0

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychoactive use

Unlike psilocybin mushrooms, the effects of A. muscaria have generally been considered undesirable for recreational use. The effects of intoxication can be variously described as depressant, sedative-hypnotic, dissociative, and deliriant; paradoxical effects may occur. Perceptual phenomena such as macropsia and micropsia may occur, which may have been the inspiration for the effect of mushroom-consumption in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Additionally, A. muscaria cannot be commercially cultivated, due to its mycorrhizal relationship with the roots of pine trees. However, following the outlawing of psilocybin mushrooms in the United Kingdom in 2006, the sale of the still legal A. muscaria began increasing.

Professor Marija Gimbutas, a renowned Lithuanian historian, reported to R. Gordon Wasson on the use of this mushroom in Lithuania. In remote areas of Lithuania Amanita muscaria has been consumed at wedding feasts, in which mushrooms were mixed with vodka. The professor also reported that the Lithuanians used to export A. muscaria to the Lapps in the Far North for use in shamanic rituals. The Lithuanian festivities are the only report that Wasson received of ingestion of fly agaric for religious use in Eastern Europe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodruff

Woodruff (Galium odoratum) is a herbaceous perennial plant in the family Rubiaceae, native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. It grows to 30-50 cm (12-20 ins.) long, often lying flat on the ground or supported by other plants. The plant is also known in English as Sweet Woodruff or Wild Baby's Breath. "Master of the woods" is probably a translation of the German name Waldmeister. Names like "Sweetscented bedstraw", "Cudweed" and "Ladies' Bedstraw" should be avoided; the former two properly refer to Galium triflorum, the latter to Galium verum.

The leaves are simple, lanceolate, glabrous, 2-5 cm long, and borne in whorls of 6-9. The small (4-7 mm diameter) flowers are produced in cymes, each white with four petals joined together at the base. The seeds are 2-4 mm diameter, produced singly, and each seed is covered in tiny hooked bristles which help disperse the seed by sticking temporarily to clothing and animal fur.

This plant prefers partial to full shade in moist, rich soils. In dry summers it needs frequent irrigation. Propagation is by crown division, separation of the rooted stems, or digging up of the barely submerged perimeter stolons.

Woodruff, as the scientific name odoratum suggests, is a strongly scented plant, the sweet scent being derived from coumarin. This scent increases on wilting and then persists on drying, and woodruff is used in pot-pourri and as a moth deterrent. It is also used, mainly in Germany, to flavour May wine (called "Maiwein" or "Maibowle" in German), beer (Berliner Weisse), brandy, sausages, jelly, jam, a soft drink (Tarhun), ice cream, and an herbal tea with gentle sedative properties.

High doses can cause headaches, due to the toxity of coumarin. Very high doses of coumarin can cause vertigo, somnolence or even central paralysis and apnoea while in a coma. Since 1981, woodruff may no longer be used as an ingredient of industrially produced drinks and foodstuffs in Germany; it has been replaced by artificial aromas and

colorings.

Not as good an attempt at photographing Abigail as the others, but I have it, so I might as well share it.

---STORY---

Well, way back in 2012, I first saw the CGI model of the Dragon Bolt, and I fell in love with the concept. Upon seeing the set, I was half let down and half elated at the usefulness of the set. However, I wanted to build something that would do the CGI model justice. So I started to build. And I quickly ran out of parts, having finished only the front legs, the back ones, the rear end and its head. So I got three more copies of the set, as I was running out of blue. Now, eventually I managed to build the body, and the wings. However, I had nowhere near enough parts to finish the design. At this point, it's fall 2014. I take apart the wings and steal some parts from the dragon's back to use in other MOCs, my Golden Mask Contest entry taking up most of them. I get some more sets, most notably two copies of Surge and Rocka Combat Machine. Then, I hear about this contest. And I decide that I will finish this project, once and for all. And I get to work.

---BACKSTORY---

See www.customherofactory.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Bolt_(ThePurpleDragonNinja) for information on my canon's version of the Dragon Bolt. The rider is Abigail Katevnas, who has been assigned by the Hero Factory to research this species, which, despite probably being the most common species in the known galaxy, is quite obscure. As such, a wild Dragon Bolt has been captured and been trained to ignore Abigail to allow her to study it. For safety reasons, Abigail has been outfitted with special grip claws and a line to secure her to the Dragon Bolt in question. In emergencies, her wrist-mounted spikes can be used to administer sedatives.

---OTHER---

I think it's worth mentioning that this is, according to my canon, a newly adult Dragon Bolt. The CGI version or the set is about the size of an adolescent Dragon Bolt. I've also built a hatchling Dragon Bolt, which I will endeavor to post soon.

AJ, totally drugged out after a day at the hospital getting an EEG. He's got ADHD, so his EEG had to be taken without meds of any sort. Unfortunately, without meds, he didn't sleep at all the night before, and the sedative they gave him to make him sleep at the hospital really laid him flat!

Read all about it here.

September 7, 2019 - Our only stop this morning before our arrival in Anchorage was The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center located in Portage, Alaska. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care.

"JB’s (Joe Boxer's) and Patron’s story began in the town of Willow, Alaska. Their mother killed a moose calf in a local resident’s backyard and as result, the man was afraid the bear might try to attack his dog. The man killed the sow*, not knowing she had cubs nearby. Once he saw the two cubs, he called the area wildlife biologist to notify him of the situation. The biologist, who happened to be a former gymnast, daringly climbed to the top of the skinny tree the cubs were hiding in. He was able to grab the smaller male cub by a rear leg, holding on to the tree with the other hand. He climbed down and lowered the cub into a fish net. The second cub was more of a challenge; she was a large female cub and acted aggressively. The biologist climbed to the top of the tree, injected her with a sedative, then grabbed her by the scruff. As he began to climb down, the skinny birch tree began to bend and crack. The tree bent all the way over, delivering the biologist and the cub safely to the ground!

After they were rescued and monitored, JB and Patron came to live at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in 2004. The siblings have since thrived! They can both be found wandering their large wooded enclosure, digging holes in the ground, or catching fish in the stream running through their enclosure! The siblings also enjoy roughhousing with each other and their fellow bear, Hugo.

*In Alaska, killing a bear in defense of life or property is legal.

About Coastal Bears:

JB and Patron are both coastal bears, commonly referred to as brown bears. Coastal bears tend to be larger than their cousins the grizzly bears because they have better access to rich fish runs. They also do not face as cold and brutal of winters as the grizzly bears of interior Alaska do. Bears are omnivores, so they eat deer, moose, and a variety of birds as well as leaves and berries. Brown bears can weigh up to 700 pounds and stand as tall as 9.5 feet!" Previous text from the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center website: www.alaskawildlife.org

The passionflower derives its name from the religious symbolism that surrounds it. The way the plant looks is thought to be symbolic of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The flowers are purple and white - colors that have long been representative of the crucifixion of Christ. The flower also has 3 styles that represent the nails used and 5 stamens that represent the wounds of Christ. While the name of this flower has its roots in the Bible, it has uses in herbal medicine as well.

The passionflower is used as a sedative and tranquilizer in many parts of North America and Central America. Research has shown that it does have this affect on the body, but the exact mechanism isn't known.

The bright yellow, Moccasin-like lip of this flower makes Lady s Slipper easy to recognize when it blooms in spring; however, it has value that goes beyond its decorative look.

Native American Indians used a boiled extract of the roots as a remedy for nervous tension, and early settlers used it as a sleep aid when Valerian was not available.

In the 19th century, Lady s Slipper root was prescribed for hysteria, delirium, irritability, headache, epilepsy, and neuralgia. This plant has sedative and antispasmodic properties.

The leaves are hallucinogenic and sedative, the leaves contain substances that make them very attractive to cats and for this reason they are especially useful as a sedative for lions etc in zoos. When consumed in large quantities the leaves can have a mild hallucinatory effect. Polygamol, which is made from the fruits, is used as a heart tonic, a dry decoction is used to treat colic and rheumatism.

[Notes: Actinidia polygama - BSWJ5444 [Crûg Farm] A rarely encountered very tough species, grown for its ornamental silver-white variegated foliage, which develop in summer. Bearing small clusters of large (for the genus) shallowly bowl shaped ice-white highly scented flowers in late spring to early summer. Best leaf colour is achieved in some sunlight, although it will grow in any type of fertile soil in sun or shade. Our collection from the Kinki area of Japan in 1998. This is a polygamous plant (hence the name). Our field trials have indicated that to produce fruit more than one clone is needed. www.crug-farm.co.uk/]

These earrings measure 2" and is made of silver plated wire and amethyst gemstone beads with Czech pressed glass beads to match. The amethyst gemstone measures 12mm X 8mm. and is 5mm. thick. The amethyst little beads that dangle at the bottom measure 3mm.

**Metaphysical Properties of Amethyst:

Also known as the "Sobriety Stone". Amethyst is purple quartz, and is a meditative and calming stone. It works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to provide calm, balance, patience, and peace. Amethyst is also beneficial when dealing with legal problems and money issues, which can lead to prosperity and abundance. Amethyst has a gentle, sedative energy that promotes peacefulness, happiness, and contentment. Amethyst can help get rid of addictions (alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc.) and compulsive behaviors of all kinds. In the psychic and spiritual realms, amethyst is an excellent all-purpose stone that can increase spirituality and enhance intuition and psychic powers of all kinds. It does this by making a clear connection between the earth plane and other planes and worlds. Amethyst also protects against psychic attacks, especially during spiritual work, and protects one from thieves, and protects travelers. Physically, amethyst is beneficial for reducing withdrawal symptoms of all kinds, blood sugar imbalances, depression, general healing, left brain imbalances, headaches, arthritis, insomnia, nightmares, other sleep disorders, ADD/ADHD, generalized anxiety, ear aches, circulatory system issues, endocrine system problems, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, immune system deficiencies, and general healing.

Primarily, amethyst is associated with the third eye and crown chakras but can also open the heart chakra.

Onions are a very good source of vitamin C, B6, biotin, chromium, calcium and dietary fibre. In addition, they contain good amounts of folic acid and vitamin B1 and K.

A 100 gram serving provides 44 calories, mostly as complex carbohydrate, with 1.4 grams of fibre.

Like garlic, onions also have the enzyme alliinase, which is released when an onion is cut or crushed and it causes your eyes to water.

They also contain flavonoids, which are pigments that give vegetables their colour. These compounds act as antioxidants, have a direct antitumor effect and have immune-enhancing properties.

Onions contain a large amount of sulfur and are especially good for the liver. As a sulfur food, they mix best with proteins, as they stimulate the action of the amino acids to the brain and nervous system.

The onion is the richest dietary source of quercitin, a potent antioxidant flavonoid (also in shallots, yellow and red onions only but not in white onions), which is found on and near the skin and is particularly linked to the health benefits of onions.

Quercitin has been shown to thin the blood, lower cholesterol, raise good-type HDL cholesterol, ward off blood clots, fight asthma, chronic bronchitis, hay fever, diabetes, atherosclerosis and infections and is specifically linked to inhibiting human stomach cancer.

It's also an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiviral, thought to have diverse anti-cancer powers. Quercitin is also a sedative. So far, there is no better food source of quercitin than onion skins.

Quote from the wikipedia entry for Absinthe:

"Today it is known that absinthe does not cause hallucinations, especially those described in the old studies. Thujone, the supposed active chemical in absinthe, is a GABA antagonist and while it can produce muscle spasms in large doses there is no evidence it causes hallucinations."

"The effects of absinthe have been described by artists as mind opening and even hallucinogenic and by prohibitionists as turning "good people" "mad and desolate". Sometimes called 'secondary effects', the most commonly reported experience is a 'clear-headed' feeling of inebriation - a 'lucid drunkenness', said to be caused by the thujone and other compounds. Some, such as chemist/absinthe historian Ted Breaux, say that these effects may be caused by the fact that some of the compounds act as stimulants, others as sedatives, overall creating a neutral effect.[29] Most others feel that the placebo effect and individual reaction to the herbs make these secondary effects subjective and minor compared to the psychoactive effects of alcohol."

"A study in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol[30] concluded that a high concentration of thujone in alcohol has negative effects on attention performance. It slowed down reaction time, and subjects concentrated their attention in the central field of vision. Medium doses did not produce an effect noticeably different from plain alcohol. The high dose of thujone in this study was larger than what one can get from current beyond-EU-regulation 'high thujone' absinthe before becoming too drunk to notice."

Poor Dempsey -- he got so stressed at the vet (annual check-up for him and Halley) that he started panting. The vet was concerned about respiratory distress, and so they sedated him. I was told that the sedative, which didn't really kick in until the visit was ending, would last around 12 hours.

The vet said that next time, they will give me sedatives for Dempsey to take before his visit.

Hunter executed after three trials

By Matthew Gray

Did Hakaraia (Billy) Te Kahu kill his mate Patrick Elliott?

Or was the death the result of a tragic hunting accident?

Two juries could not decide either way and a bewildered Te Kahu was forced to stand trial a third time at the Hamilton Supreme Court in June 1921.

The final proceedings did not take a long as the first and second and the 12 jurors returned a guilty verdict after deliberating for just under 3 hours.

Te Kahu broke down as the judge sentenced him to death and a doctor was ushered in to administer a sedative by injection.

The prisoner was assisted from the court and transported to Mt Eden Prison.

Te Kahu and Elliott were both employees of the Taupo Totara Company and lived the the little settlement of Ongaroto.

The pair were friends and frequently hunted together.

Bothe were seen heading out with the shotguns on Easter Sunday, March 27.

Te Kahu was back in circulation again the next day and seemed mystified as everyone else when Elliott could not be found.

He said he'd last seen Elliott early that morning when he called in to his whare and borrowed a coat.

Elliott, he said, was asleep and no words were exchanged.

People living in the community became increasingly alarmed as another day passed with still no sign of the missing man.

Work resumed after the Easter break and a search party was called in when Elliott failed to show at the sawmill.

Volunteers focused their efforts on the nearby Waikato River and its surrounds

Te Kahu joined in but a number of people were growing increasingly suspicious of him.

Some noted he appeared to have more money than usual and was spending up large and gambling more than usual.

Others thought his attitude towards Elliott's disappearance reeked of something a little more sinister than plain concern.

And so Te Kahu found himself to be the main suspect when Elliott's body was finally located face down in the river on April 11.

The dead man had been shot in the back and evidence showed that someone had rifled through his trouser pockets.

Elliott's body was whisked away north to Waikumete Cemetery for burial with family members and Te Kahu was charged with murder.

A witness brought in to give evidence said both the defendant and deceased had just been paid before going hunting.

The prosecution claimed Te Kahu denied the accusation, saying he and Elliott had hunted separately throughout the day and returned to their respective houses at night.

At least one witness confirmed seeing lights burning in both men's homes that evening. But no one could say they'd seen Elliott alive after Sunday and Te Kahu's desperate bid to prove himself innocent suffered as a result.

Blood found on his trousers did little for his case despite his claims that the stains came from a pig he'd killed.

Public opinion over Te Kahu's subsequent fate varied.

Petioners in Christchurch said it was barbaric and “unBritish”to keep trying a man until he was found guilty.

A few said Elliott could have been felled by stray bullets from any number of guns in the area. Their words fell on death ears.

Te Kahu was hanged on October 10, 1921, and is also buried at Waikumete.

Hangman's Terror

It is interesting to recall, in connection with executions in New Zealand, that a peculiar position arose regarding the hanging of the Maori murderer, Hararaia Te Kahu, m Mt. Eden gaol early in October, 1921.

The hangman entered the gaol on Saturday night as the execution had been arranged for Monday morning.

During the week-end he underwent an experience, which, it is said, permanently terminated his active participation in executions. His experience might appropriately be called "The Hangman's Dream."

A nerve-ridden wreck was discharged from gaol on the Sunday, almost m a state of collapse — and it was the man who had contracted to hang the Maori.

The sudden transformation, the warders ascertained, was due to a particularly vivid dream the prospective hangman had experienced on the Saturday night. He had seen himself being led to the scaffold, taking his position on the trapdoor and the noose put about his neck. He had seen himself taking the Maori murderer's place!

In a voice hysterical with terror, he announced next morning that nothing would induce him to go through with the execution and a substitute had to be found immediately. This proved to be a difficult matter.

The sheriff at the time was A. Stubbs and the grim task would have fallen upon his shoulders if no executioner had been forthcoming. Strangely enough, Sheriff Stubbs was due to retire a few days before the execution and his successor, Sheriff Ward, fell ill at Wanganui.

Sheriff Stubbs placed the matter in the hands of his deputy, W. Schramm, now a well-known Auckland lawyer, but on the eve of the execution he received a telegram asking him to remain in office a few days longer.

After considerable difficulty a hangman was found. He was a prisoner named George B. Thompson, alias Braithwaite, now believed to be in Australia.

Thompson agreed to perform the execution on condition that his sentence would be remitted. He was brought to Auckland from Rotoroa Island.

Project 365 - Image 58/365

Today I had to go to work for a while and left the little guys to fend for themselves until I returned home about 30 minutes ago. Babo was totally excited when I returned home and was jumping up and down on the computer desk shouting "We has to votes, we has to votes" while waving his hands and arms about like a flaming lunatic.

It was almost getting to the stage where I was contemplating where I could aquire some sedatives quickly when he started to make some sense, "Your mum calls me and Wage today and tells us to surfs the interweb for update on the film Bryan makes, and we also find this!!!".

Bryan is my younger brother and at present is preparing to start shooting his new film back home in the UK, the film is called "Booked Out" (I'll drop a link at the bottom of here if you fancy checking it out. As well as making his film he can also be found strumming his guitar as part of the band Puppet Tears, who are competing in the Emerging Talent Awards 2010 for the chance to play at the Gaymers Camden Crawl in May.

Babo had stumbled upon the page where you can vote for Bryan's band just before I had got home from work, which explains the crazyness I walked in on. After we voted for them to win the competition Babo continued to surf the web (he loves to put in his name and look at pictures of other people with the same name using a google image search).

The road to Gesaffelstein’s second studio album, HYPERION, has been a roller coaster. Of course, when the dark prince of techno’s return was announced, the EDM community at large cheered and reveled in the news. And then we received “Reset,” which was accompanied by a hip hop-hating music video. Or was it? It was really hard to tell. Then he released “Lost In The Fire” with The Weeknd as the album’s second single, which ended up being criticized for its lyrics. The final single, “Blast Off” with Pharrell Williams, is a great Pharrell track — but not so much for Gesaffelstein.

All of this is to say that as the album rollout continued, many if not most of Gesaffelstein’s original fans felt themselves becoming alienated by his new music. His new home on Columbia Records certainly had a small part to play in the album’s changing tone, but ultimately, this was not the Gesaffelstein that we had once known.

And yet, now that HYPERION is out in full, it has revealed itself to be a far more complex listen than the vapid pop tunes that had been released as singles. The 10-track album clocks in at 40 minutes, not least of all because of a 10-minute ambient track “Humanity Gone” that serves as the album’s closer.

HYPERION begins with the title track, “Hyperion,” a very intro-focused track that lands somewhere in between M83, Animal Collective, or MGMT. The repetitive synth loop is joined by a simple analog melody that ends up giving it an overwhelming psychedelic atmosphere — one could even say that it’s a bright and hopeful track. It sets a tone that is immediately flipped on its head by the following song, “Reset.”

Whereas “Hyperion” was a beautifully arranged and ever-evolving track that brought many of Gesaffelstein’s strengths to the surface in new ways, “Reset” was comparably far more simple. The main beat for the track begins 10 seconds in and hardly wavers for the remainder of the 195 seconds except for an ambient bridge about halfway through. Immediately, listeners are hit with a dichotomy of sound and so far it’s a very confusing experience.

This is then followed up by “Lost in the Fire,” the first vocal track on the album and Gesaffelstein’s third occasion teaming up with Abel. Even if you weren’t privy to the previously mentioned controversy over the lyrics, the line “while I fuck you straight” is so emphasized that it’s impossible to mix. It stands out so staunchly against the rest of the track, you can’t help but think, “Wait… what did he just say?” If not for the troubling nature of the lyrics, it hurts that it pulls you out of immersion in the track, as well.

After these three wildly different tracks, we come to “Ever Now,” which, while it isn’t labeled as such, is really just an interlude. And yet, despite it being so short, the ambient and inquisitive nature of the track gives it a hypnotic quality that pulls you in and begs of you to want more. Following the first three tracks, HYPERION continues to present tracks at odds with each other, providing for an enigmatic listen, to say the least.

Finally, we come back to “Blast Off,” the collaboration with Pharrell Williams. Curiously, “Blast Off” fits into the album far better than I anticipated when I first heard the single. It’s still incredibly simple and very safe, and still comes off as a better Pharrell track than Gesaffelstein track, but it’s far from the least impressive track on the album so far.

Next up is “So Bad” with HAIM, easily one of the more wildcard tracks on the album. As it turns out, “So Bad” is quite sedative, playing with HAIM’s listless vocals against a mildly mesmerizing melody. It’s ultimately forgettable, which is unfortunate as this album needs every hit it can get.

The other wildcard of the album, “Forever” with The Hacker and Electric Youth, is alternatively a fantastic song with depth that actually does a lot with the comparably listless vocals. The production is brighter with a more varied melody and some actual piano notes thrown in to break up the monotony. Compared to “So Bad,” this is easily the more enjoyable of the two.

Going to the home stretch of the album, we’re presented with three instrumental tracks: “Vortex,” “Memora,” and “Humanity Gone.” Far and away, the final 16 or so minutes of the album are its strongest. While “Humanity Gone” alone is nearly 11 minutes, “Vortex” and “Memora” could have easily been combined into one 6-minute track, as well. The ambiance and dark production are more present here than anywhere else in the album, and it’s sad that it took this long to get here.

It’s actually a neat little trick, too, when you think about it. You’ve spent so much time listening to two-star-out-of-five tracks on the album that when you finally get to the end, you’re met with 16 minutes of greatness. As you come out of it, experiencing recency bias first hand, you think to yourself, “Wow, that album was actually really good,” when in fact, you’re just remembering your favorite tracks because you’ve just heard them.

But to zero in on “Humanity Gone” specifically for a moment, it is truly a phenomenal track. It’s just ten minutes of pure, ambient Gesaffelstein — it’s like swimming in his mind and getting pulled under a rip tide of emotion and swirling ethereal bliss. It’s interesting how the album manages to come full circle back to a more psychedelic ending after such a long string of forgettable singles.

Ultimately, I would give HYPERION a 6.5/10. It’s not a bad album by any means, but aside from the final three tracks, there’s nothing in it that would make me want to come back and listen again. It’s certainly an album that everyone should listen to at least once, if not simply because it is Gesaffelstein, then because it’s important to see how artists change over time — it’s a brilliant lesson in how to accept and deal with deviations from your expectations.
