Recently, the Games BAFTAs happened at the Tobacco Dock in London. The venue sports both spectacular overground and underground scenery. Wanting to take full advantage of all the Tobacco Dock had to offer, I meandered upstairs, which I was not actually allowed to do. Up there I met two security guards near a giant banner saying “no entry”. I walked up to them and asked “So is this the end of the line?” (I thought I was being so clever). Towering half a metre above me, the guy with the tattoos and arms the size of my thighs goes on to inform me that the entire upper area was restricted. The short guy, in what reminded me of a good cop / bad cop routine, suggestively asks, are you a press photographer? I was wearing a full-on formal suit in anticipation of the awards ceremony following later on. Thus, I took my chances and told them I was a press-photographer. Press-photographer, hobby-photographer. What’s the difference, right? What matters is that these two guys whose names I never found out treated me nicely, despite the fact that they were security and I had, well, a camera. Trust me, the two don’t usually mix that well. They asked me for a picture. I took one. It was awful. The shorter one of the two walked over and complimented me, multiple times, on how nice a picture I had taken and whether he would be in the papers. I told him that sadly, no, I had no control over that. In some ways I was happy I had not given them either my name or card and also not gotten their contact details since otherwise I would have had to follow through showing them what I initially considered an awful image. The sun had completely blasted all light-proportions in this image out of shape.

I’d gotten all the spectacular panoramic views I wanted up on the restricted-access top floor and thus made my way back down, nearly deleting this image, thinking “They will never see this and I think it is an awful image”. But then I kind of could not bring myself to delete it. Probably because there were two guys there who, judging by their looks and language were a million miles away from what I might describe as ‘my scene’. They struck me like real men, people with integrity. People who value graspable, real things and prefer experience and wisdom over abstraction and pseudo-intellectual discourse. I liked these guys as much as they scared the living daylights out of me. The short one is not actually a short person. So the tall one is an absolute giant. I tried angling my camera in a away that did not give this away too much, as that tends to make portraits look very awkward.

As I returned home and fired up my edit, I had almost forgotten about these two guys who could have so easily made my life a living hell and instead treated me so nicely. Like I was a buddy of theirs. That made me feel quite bad. “Sod it, I will edit this one first”. And so I did. Over 100 steps later we arrive at the above.

One of the friendly security staff at the Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap Cambodia- this gentleman was curious- and amused- at my penchant for taking pictures of anything and everything in the temple- and I was not even using a dSLR at the time! All in all, I found the locals in Siem Reap very friendly. Their painful history and untold suffering at the hands of the demented Khmer Rogue lunatics and the genocide during their regime has made Cambodians an extremely sweet, humble and loveable set of people. May they continue to prosper and grow. The Khmer Rouge contagion was mercifully destroyed but sadly the chief perpetrator, Pol Pot went to the grave without standing trial for the millions he murdered and for the country who's culture, music and traditions he destroyed. Back to the Angkor Wat, Virtually all of its surfaces, columns, lintels and even roofs are carved. There are miles of reliefs illustrating scenes from Indian literature including unicorns, griffins, winged dragons pulling chariots as well as warriors following an elephant-mounted leader and celestial dancing girls with elaborate hair styles. The gallery wall alone is decorated with almost 1,000 square metres of bas reliefs. Holes on some of the Angkor walls indicate that they may have been decorated with bronze sheets. These were highly prized in ancient times and were a prime target for robbers, due to which none of them are in existance now. Detailed notes about the Angkor Wat temple appear throughout this album. (see previous and subsequent images). (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008)

September 28, 2016 - A ride on the Devil's Nose Train from Alausí to Condor Puñuna. "This section of the railway was a feat of engineering originally built to solve the problem of running trains from high-altitude capital of Quito to Guayaquil on Ecuador's pacific Coast. Over the years, other parts of the Trans-Andean Railroad have fallen into disuse, but the tracks along the steep Devil's Nose section continue to provide a thrilling ride" This engineering feat has been called "The most difficult railway in the world".

This one told me I couldn't shoot the picture of his buddy from where I was standing.

I feel every shopping street has a daily twilight time; when customers stop coming; and the shops stare at the world around it; as if like; it has a lot to depict. Here in Bangalore it is generally between 9 pm and 10 pm. That’s nice time for some quick showroom photography.

I’ve posted both BW and color version of this pic. Let me know which one you like better.

And also thanks to my friend Anirban for letting me use his camera to capture this frame; as I did not have mine with me at that moment.

He's a security guard at my apartment. He usually taking a nap during his work time. This time, however, it was the worst one.

He went into the space between the building and the fence!

Gosh .. should I tell the owner of this apartment to fire him??

There was three other security guards around us.

She was the only one going after people with a camera.

I started to take a photo of the Bank of America which had been closed because of the protest and they told me I wasn't allowed to.

I explained I was on a public sidewalk. One of them gestured to an imaginary

line which they said was the Bank of America's property. Even if that was the case, I was a few feet beyond it.

I started taking some photos and they certainly didn't represent the Bank of America in a very favorable way.

I then noticed that red paint had been thrown high up on the window. Still, pretty mild compared to some of the Vietnam era protests against B of A.

I had been shooting for about an hour inside Denver's Union Station. I wasn't really happy with the shots and wanted a new vantage point. I went upstairs, past the "Visitors Not Allowed Past This Point" signs, to look for new angles. Instead, a cleaning woman yelled up to me that I shouldn't be there and heads off to find security.

Next comes the obvious footsteps up the stairs. As I started down, I ran into this gentleman.

"Are you the one upstairs taking pictures?" he asked. Yes and I'm just leaving.

Luckily, I had my 4 year old photographic assistant, Molly, with me. He saw her and turned on a very warm smile.

"Do you mind if I take your picture?" I ask. Sure go ahead. And just like that the escort to the door was over and he was smiling for my camera.

Thanks, Officer Hawkins.
