The crowd under the bridge are waiting to pass security screening and enter Library Mall for President Obama's visit. On the bridge, there are police on guard.
President Barack Obama visited the UW–Madison campus on Tuesday, Sept. 28. An estimated crowd of 26,500 filled Library Mall and surrounding areas, hoping to hear and catch a glimpse of the president, and experience firsthand what would soon be part of the UW’s history.

This place has been photographed to death in Shanghai, but I still couldn't help myself. From the observation deck on the 88th floor of the Jin Mao Tower, you can look directly down the middle of the Grand Hyatt Hotel right into their lobby. The hotel operates from the 37th floor upwards if I recall correctly.
A gloomy day in Seattle didn't keep me from exploring a bit more of the Emerald City on a recent errand I had to run up there. I really enjoy exploring cities, and in addition to living in a great one to explore, I have another just a few hours drive up the road.
This was taken in the Olympic Sculpture Park, really an interesting spot that I had never visited before despite it being right on the waterfront and having passed by it countless times.
Taken during the Harbourside Festival while a security man was trying to move on a busker. The busker is a regular in this area of the city, who carries his drum kit on a trolly attached to his bicycle.
On Saturday 23rd january, a small contingent from the Bristol flickr group added ourselves to the protest against section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
This photographer was hassled by one of the security guards at the National Gallery as he was trying to grab a shot of the event. The security guard was roundly booed by those of us below.

I took more shots than this in The Square, but a security guard made me delete them before I left. Including shots I took of Albert Street Car Park.
Have lost them as I later took more shots somewhere else (didn't think to switch memory cards).
He was ok with these ones as they are not architectural.
He says you need to contact the manager of the site during the week to get permission. Also says it because of terrorists. As if terrorists would attack this place!
I'm not going to go back and retake those lost shots.
I have downloaded something to check the card, but think I overwrote the losts files. This hasn't happened to me before!

Making sure a trade show is secure is a job for this woman, who looks like she is of retirement age. Whether it's boredom or a real need for money, it's not unusual to see elderly employees. Novi, Michigan.
This photo is soft and out of focus... but I really liked the look of panic on his face. You have to catch it early in the Con... after a few hours break-dancing wizards really lose their shock value.

Another man in uniform, this is Abdulasiz Suaib, a Muslim from the Maranao tribe. He is currently fasting for the Ramadan while still working as security guard in 3 different shifts.

These two men are walking away after harassing me for photographing the U.S. Coast Guard facility on Alaska Way South in Seattle. This is the only shot of them I have. The man on the left is a member of the Coast Guard. The one on the right is a security guard working there.
I was at Jack Perry Memorial Park to take pictures of ships, container cranes, and the Seattle skyline. The park is a public viewing area of the Port of Seattle. It abuts the south border of the Coast Guard's Thirteenth District installation on Alaska Way South. My friend Kris was with me for a photo excursion.
After getting some shots of the container cranes across the waterway, I stood on a concrete vehicle barrier and started shooting the Seattle downtown skyline. Those shots looked right over the Coast Guard installation and included parts of the Coast Guard ships berthed nearby. While I did this, a security guard behind the Coast Guard fence asked to talk to me about my photography.
I walked over to the fence and we had a talk. He was concerned that I was photographing from atop the barrier and asserted that it is forbidden to photograph "this Homeland Security base." My attempt to enlighten him about unrestricted photography from public areas seemed to annoy him. I offered him a copy of the Bert Krages monograph on the rights of photographers, but he didn't want it. He dismissed its relevance because a lawyer wrote it. (I kid you not!)
When he asked me to delete the photos that included the installation I told him I would not. It might have been at that point that he called somebody else on his two-way radio. Shortly thereafter a member of the Coast Guard came over and repeated what the security guard had said about "no photographs." He explained that photography would reveal the lay-out of the facility. Both men ignored my claim that Google Earth imagery already reveals the layout.
I was in the mood to tell the men to go fly a kite, but I didn't want the situation to escalate because my friend (who was with me) had taken a day off from work for our photo excursion. I didn't want to spoil his day. So I more or less said I would take no more installation pictures and we left. The men were satisfied and left. I shot this photo as they walked away. At least they were not belligerent about the matter.
My photo was taken from the center of this Wikimapia aerial view, looking northeast. (Please do not look at the layout of the area just north of my vantage point, as that might compromise national security.)
UPDATE ON 18 Feb 2011:
On the day of the incident I wrote a letter to the commander of the 13th Naval District, explaining this incident and stating my displeasure about it. Today I received a letter from the base commander, Captain R.J. Klapproth, which said that there is no prohibition on photographing the base and that the men acted improperly. In addition to apologizing for the incident, he invited me to ask for a tour of the base (with camera!) by contacting its Public Affairs Office. Although it took a long time to get a response, at least I got one---and it was a good one.

We got back from another succesful UPfest in Bristol last night and were just glad that we managed to get the bulk of our work done on Saturday – when the sun was shining, the crowds were plentiful and the beer was flowing. Sunday turned out to be a different story but at least we managed to get our piece completed and still had time for a good look around.
After an early start on Saturday morning (following some feverish last minute preparations) we managed to make it to the Tobacco Factory for about 11.30 and then onto the Spotted Cow for a midday start. As we were a little late in arriving we got no choice in which boards we got but i think that eventually worked out to our advantage. Once we’d got disco-bag set up we got off to a quick start as we had plenty of work to be getting on with. By about 8pm we were pretty much done for the day so packed our stuff up and headed out for a few (more) beers. Whoever thought of putting us within such easy reach of alcohol in a pub garden certainly has a lot to answer for…
After a night on the town and a very rainy start to the day we return to the Spotted Cow to finish up to find that that some rogue decorators had obviously taken umbrage at our piece and had decided to show us a taste of our own medicine by wallpapering over the whole lot of it! It would also appear that the Grey Ghost Guards were around in the area (possibly in collusion with the rogue decorators) and looking to have our piece cleaned off the wall. Luckily we have some security footage so all will be revealed once we’ve had a chance to examine it and identify the perpatrators…
Anyway we did our best to remove the wallpaper and expose our image underneath resulting in a decayed and battered looking wall with the legend ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. I’ll get those pesky Daily Mail reading rogue decorators and Grey Ghost Guard critters if it’s the last thing i do…

After some bombings in Bali and Jakarta, security checks are a part of daily life. People are be subjected to a check at every hotel and major shopping complex, but don't worry, some security guards were very friendly. Like the one above, they politely asked me to take their picture after checking my backpack, right after they found a camera inside of it. haha.

*I test pocket film Pentax PC35AF-M a friend has lend me, and goofily ignore 'picture area frame' inside the viewfinder. Most of the result using this camera were tragically cropped!
*and since it was a try out, I attached expired Venus 800 negative film. See that fantastic grain? ;)
*Flash fired. It was about 7:30 PM.
*I happen to sharpen this a bit. (I don't know why the exif data does not appear here)
Another version of the Arndale ramp with Transport interchange in mid ground and the CIS tower in the background.
The two curves goes up/ down the ramp works in helical manner to/from the car park.
I think the mono horizontal format works better, with a black background. I also tried to fit both the base of the ramp AND the tower but can't. :-( Maybe needs a vertorama.

A short while after taking this and several other photographs at this location, and after brief discussions with the security guards seen here, I was approached by two uniformed Metropolitan Police constables seconded to SO23 Olympic Command, near Old Ford Lock on the River Lee.
The two officers effected a 'stop and account' on me. They had earlier threatened to effect a 'stop and search' on me, using handcuffs and force if necessary. I was stopped under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, and given a receipt.
Constable Birch entered the following information on the form: "STOP + ACCOUNT. Information received by G4S Security at Olympic Park that subject was seen taking photographs of North Search Plaza. Subject was evasive + obstructive to security officers at location. Satisfactory stop." Also present was Constable Doherty PL5335.
I will be making a complaint to the Metropolitan Police about this incident.
In Banasree, Every single apartment building is guarded by one or more security guards. They sit or stand in front of the entrance and looks out for potential security issues e.g. unwanted entrances, New faces on the run etc. (!)
As most of them have no training on security, actually their duty is similar to that of a Caretaker; not a security guard. Nevertheless, both the employee and employer prefer to call the post as "Security Guard" . Most probably this name has more appeal than that of "Caretaker" !

The office recently hired a lady security guard. She looks like Zhang Zhi Yi in Angie Dickenson's outfit hehe
Not trying to be mean or judgmental, being I am a member of the full figure society, but I was not sure if this was a woman or man, I am thinking a woman due to the ear ring and bag strap. Plus I hope this guard never has to chase anyone down, could be stressful on the old ticker. But I am glad this guard has a job when so many folks are out of work, nation wide.

LEWIS: THE GIFT OF PROMISE,
AIRDATE: Sunday 24 April 2011,
Season Five Episode Four
Andrea De Ritter, founder of an organization that supports gifted children,is murdered after making a presentation to Zoe Suskin, only fifteen but an Oxford student. That night Andrea had resisted the advances of young student Elmo Woodeson as well as sending a copy of the autobiography of former spy mistress Dame Grace Orde to Zoe's publisher father Leon. She had added inside the book Who Killed Mary? See Chapter 8. Both Leon and Elmo are killed shortly after and Zoe's tutor Donald Voss is poisoned though not fatally. Suskin had punched Liam Cullen,Andrea's lover, wrongly believing he was having an affair with his wife Judith following a text message to her and indeed sexual affairs, with Andrea at their hub, would seem to motivate the killings. However Dame Grace eventually tells Lewis that Mary,a naive young informant, was sacrificed by her IRA lover back in Belfast in 1987,when Grace was an operative and Liam worked for a pro-Republican lawyer.Revenge on the gunman is the true reason for the killings as he fights to prevent his exposure, though Dame Grace at least has a positive surprise for Lewis.
In the fifth season closer The Gift of Promise Lewis and Hathaway investigate when prominent local businesswoman Andrea de Ritter is brutally murdered. Their first suspicions are a blackmail plot that has gone awry but as they dig further they soon discover that Andrea may have discovered information about a government cover up.
Former MI5 chief Grace Orde has just published her memoirs and it seems Andrea was convinced that they held the key to a decades old death but Grace is not at all keen to be questioned by anyone.
The further death of Andrea’s lover Elmo, a poisoning and a stabbing seems Lewis a little out of his depth and have to tangle with the none too friendly workings of the British Secret Service.
A good season close with some high profiles guest stars and good to see Lewis a little out of his comfort zone here too having to deal with MI5 definitely rattles his cage a little.

Korean Security Guard (SG) in 1960 on the road just below my New Itaewon home on Namsan Mountain, Seoul, Korea. The guard is looking north. Behind the guard, hidden by the low hill, is Yongsan (right), Old Itaewon (right), and the Han River. Background mountains are on the south side of Han River. The road running horizontal behind the guard leads to the Itaewon pond, off picture on the left, from which my father, Leroy Smothers, took the winter photo of our house (see earlier post).
