In modern times humans have replaced blind faith in Scriptures, religion and God with blind faith in capitalism, science and technology. The replacement was necessary because religion failed humankind and capitalism seemed to offer a better way.
Capitalism has failed. Capitalism is dead. All those starry eyed promises of eternal growth and eternal prosperity are as empty as promises of eternal life in Heaven above.
As it turns out, the Earth is a finite planet with finite resources and a finite capacity for humankind's pollution. What has seemed like ever increasing prosperity (for the fortunate) over the last two centuries was nothing more than the present generation stealing from future generations.
Whereas we have everything we have left the future with nothing except a desolate, depleted, polluted, toxic, increasingly inhospitable and hellish planet.
Humankind chose a dead end path and our species has destroyed its own future.
Don't worry, though, because the Earth will stay alive. There is life after humankind just as there was life after the dinosaurs. Humans are not at all vital to the Universe.
