The incredible story of Jack and Susan could have come straight off a script for ‘Homeward Bound 2’. The day the tiny Chihuahua was born 11 years ago, Susan’s father Jack sadly passed away. To honour him, Susan decided to name the little dog, who had become such a comfort to her, in memory of her father.
The pair had 10 wonderful years together in Adelaide and they shared a strong bond, until 12 months ago when Jack mysteriously went missing. Susan said even though she had Jack microchipped, she wasn’t confident she would ever see her pal again.
“The last time I saw him, he went underneath the house and just vanished from there on,” Susan said. “I thought he must have been bitten by a snake or something. I thought I’d lost my little man for good.”
Meanwhile in a busy Adelaide street, a family watched in horror as a tiny Chihuahua was thrown from a moving car that then sped off. Disgusted, they rescued him, renamed him ‘Peanut’ and kept him for their own, assuming he had been abandoned by his owner and unaware that he had a microchip that could lead him straight back to Susan. When the family moved to Melbourne recently for work commitments, Jack got confused and managed to escape from the new address. And so the adventurous pooch was on the loose again!
However it wasn’t long before The Lost Dogs’ Home Ambulance was called to collect the little guy and bring him to the North Melbourne shelter, where he was scanned and his chip discovered. When Susan got the call to say her Jack had been found – thousands of kilometres away from home – she couldn’t believe her ears.
“After nearly 12 months, I thought ‘no, I won’t ever see him again’. But there was still that little bit of hope left, that one percent chance. And here he is, thanks to microchipping.”
The Lost Dogs’ Home was able to arrange for Jack to be flown into Adelaide airport yesterday, where Susan was eagerly waiting to greet him.
“His favourite treat was Tiny Teddy biscuits,” Susan said. “I couldn’t even say their name without him going crazy. So I’ve bought packets of those biscuits as a homecoming treat for him.”
“I did used to spoil him rotten, and he will be even more now.”
General Manager of the Lost Dogs’ Home Sue Conroy said that the family who took in ‘Peanut’ had taken great care of the cheeky Chihuahua. They were heartbroken to have to give him back to his owner, but took relief in the knowledge that he was so missed and loved in his previous home.
“The message here is that when people find an animal they need to take it to the proper authority, where scanning can take place,” Sue said. “Never assume an animal doesn’t have someone waiting.”

Arabic Script pendant also from Brooke who says it comes from India. Beads were bought on a whim and just happen to match the background of the pendant more perfectly than the picture shows. Is on a black cord.
