Four leaves of a palm-leaf manuscript written in Tham Lao script, probably Pali language. Likely late 20th century. Found at the night market in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Tham (Pali: thamma; Sanskrit: dharma) script is an old script derived from Old Mon around the beginning of the 14th century, used originally for Buddhist purposes in monasteries. This is the Lao variant, still in use in monasteries today. Talipot (Corypha umbraculifera) or Palmyra palms (Borassus flabellifer) were usually grown in monastery grounds to provide leaves, which were treated and pressed to form a writing substrate. Text is scratched into the surface of the leaf with a sharp metal stylus and then rubbed with soot to colour the scratches.
Typographically, the content has a flat structure with no hierarchy, sections or titles, simply utilising as many leaves are necessary for the length of text. Letters in the left margin are for pagination; the top leaf seems to have some sort of footnote, correction or addition in the right margin. Holes bored through every leaf allow string or pegs to keep the pages together in order, and text is written running around the holes with some breathing room. (Supplementary, smaller holes have been poked through the text itself later, to allow the leaves to be transferred to a case of different dimensions.)
Having historically not been a secular script, Tham has not undergone the reforms evident in modern central Thai or Lao. Notable features of Tham script include an absence of word spaces, stacked consonant conjuncts, and fairly rounded forms suitable for writing on the striated texture of the palm leaves (the thin leaves are especially vulnerable to horizontal strokes along the grain which can cause tearing). Tham also features independent vowel signs (as well as combining vowel diacritics). These factors give Tham a striking resemblance to Burmese.
This is a fairly typical example of a palm-leaf manuscript, written without much ornamentation as a functional text. Characters are fairly large (a normal writing size) and show the kind of variation in form that would result from a normal writing speed (i.e. not written carefully with consistency of form across all instances of a letter). Leaves are trimmed to rectangles, rather than left with the bowed edges sometimes seen in more important manuscripts. In some patches, we can see show-through, and in some places the soot has spread along the grain of the leaves slightly, fuzzing the letters. Both these imperfections could be the result of poor preparation or storage of the palm leaves.

While in the same vein and spirit as Burgues and Compendium, Bellissima began from an entirely different thread as those fonts. It started with Alex Trochut generously showing me a gorgeous lettering book from his grandfather's library: Bellezas de la Caligrafía, by Ramón Stirling, 1844. Stirling was one of the Latin calligraphy pioneers who introduced a refined version of English calligraphy in Spain and made it popular in the nineteenth century.
Some scans from that book served as initial basis for the caps in my Poem Script. But it was always in the back of my mind that I should do a copperplate, and the Stirling model was the perfect source. My intention was to veer away from Stirling's exuberant ornamentation, and work within simplified forms of his ideas. As it usually is with most of my projects, Bellissima became its own bird and shaped its own flying patterns. Suddenly there were many ligatures, multiple endings and swashed connections, hundreds of alternates for both uppercase and lowercase.
Bellissima has an effusive energy that appeals much beyond its sourcing. It's intended for these modern times of appreciation for old crafty things like stationary and letterpress, where its origins help it shine brightly.
Bellissima Script Pro is a complete font with almost 2000 characters full of alternates, swashes, ligatures & ornaments covering a wide palette of latin languages and Bellissima Script Redux is a random sample of glyphs totally usable with a reduced price.

Just came across this old file, a test script for a Valentine letter we sent out in 2009 to brands we loved. Handwritten script by Paul Antonio
The script is coming back! It's a nice relief from the Cyrillic which makes Mongolia feel more like Russia and it wants to at this time.
