After the conclusion of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894, Makoto Hagiwara, a Japanese immigrant and gardener, approached John McLaren with the idea to convert the temporary exhibit into a permanent park. Hagiwara personally oversaw the building of the Japanese Tea Garden and was official caretaker of the garden from 1895 to 1925.

Just like so many others, I stared in wonder at the stonework of the walls of Machu Picchu. How did Inca craftsmen shape these enormous blocks of stone that fit so finely together?!

The architecture of San Francisco is quite varied, from the modern skyscrapers to the vintage wooden Victorians of the 1800s. I have always been impressed with the detail and style of the Victorian houses. Their preservation is a point of pride for many San Franciscans.

Grace Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral located on Nob Hill in San Francisco. It is the cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of California and is well-known for it's beautiful stain glass window panels.

The music concourse was originally constructed as a grand court for the 1894 California Mid-winter International Exposition. It was completed in 1900 when the music pavilion, commonly known as the Temple of Music, was constructed.

Faces are tricky. I would not say the new version is open-and-shut better. Maybe more essential.
On the ridge high above Tierradentro village there are numerous tombs, excavated and pilfered by grave robbers and left to deteriorate from the elements of nature. Lacking sophisticated photographic equipment I was able to take a picture of a robbed tomb using candlelight with a long time exposure.

After a couple days in the crowded tourist mecca of Kuta Beach we sought sanctuary in Candidasa and moved into the beachfront Homestay Agung Cottages.
