The architecture of San Francisco is quite varied, from the modern skyscrapers to the vintage wooden Victorians of the 1800s. I have always been impressed with the detail and style of the Victorian houses. Their preservation is a point of pride for many San Franciscans.

Unexpectedly, while in downtown San Francisco, a well organized and colorful parade approached. It was a Falun Dafa protest, with brightly-costumed and peaceful marchers.
San Francisco is well-known as an activist center. It should not be surprising to encounter a demonstration on the streets. What was surprising were the colorful and coordinated costumes, marching bands and the polite orderliness of the event.

At the end of the 18th century, the Kertha Gosa Pavilion, the hall of justice, was erected in the north-eastern corner of the palace compound. It typified the Klungkung style of architecture and painting. Kertha Gosa was considered the supreme court of Bali, and cases on the island which could not be resolved were transferred to this site. Three Brahmana priests presided over the court and were known for their harsh and inhumane sentences. The convicts (as well as visitors today) were able to view the ceiling which depicted different punishments while they were awaiting sentencing. The paintings of Puri Kertha Gosa are one of the outstanding examples of the Kamasan (or Wayang) style.
