Near San Agustin, Colombia a pre Incan culture left many carved statues in and near their tombs and sacred places. Many of the statues depict a rather blood thirsty deity. An hour walk from town brings one to a site of excavated tombs and a display of statues and statuettes in a forest reserve trail.

In 1913, construction began on a new church (now known as the Mission Dolores Basilica) adjacent to the Mission, which was completed in 1918. This structure was further remodeled in 1926 with churrigueresque ornamentation inspired by the Panama-California Exposition held in San Diego's Balboa Park. A sensitive restoration of the origial adobe Mission was undertaken in 1917 by noted architect Willis Polk. In 1952, San Francisco Archbishop John J. Mitty, announced that Pope Pius XII had elevated Mission Dolores to the status of a Minor Basilica. This was the first designation of a basilica west of the Mississippi and the fifth basilica named in the United States. Today, the larger, newer church is called "Mission Dolores Basilica" while the original adobe structure retains the name of Mission Dolores.

Ruby Newman was commissioned by the San Francisco Art Commission and Recreation and Parks Department to oversee the 1977-1984 restoration of the decorative aspects of this 1914 carrousel. There are 62 menagerie animals and 4 chariots. The Decorative Housing which included: 54 pictorial panels and 18 carved masks were also lovely restored. She designed the color palette and hand painted the entire carrousel. These pieces were in an extremely depressed state with signs of major dry rot and worn surfaces throughout.

While serving on a yacht I sailed up the Amazonas/Pará river system to Belém do Pará, Brazil. One day we explored the shoreline of a nearby island and entered a maze of waterways choked by mangroves and flooded tropical forest. This image fails to show the extreme tepid tropical heat or the constant drone of insects, frogs and birds.

Even a tree known for a tremendously long life span will eventually succumb. Sometimes the shallow root system of a coastal redwood can not withstand a fierce pacific storm and the tree will crash to the forest floor. The elements gradually decompose the tree over a period of decades creating some spectacular shapes.

A long journey down the Amazon River is monotonous and uncomfortable. The days are hot and the scenery unchanging. The mode of travel, lounging in a hammock prevents a complete meltdown.

Falun Gong or Falun Dafa (literally means "Dharma Wheel Practice") is a spiritual discipline first introduced in China in 1992 through public lectures by its founder, Li Hongzhi. It combines the practice of meditation and slow-moving qigong exercises with a moral philosophy.

On July 20, 1999, after three years of mounting tensions between the group and the government, the Communist Party of China (CPC) leadership initiated a nationwide crackdown and multifaceted propaganda campaign intended to eradicate the practice. In October 1999 it declared Falun Gong a "heretical organization" and began banning Internet access to websites that mention Falun Gong. Human rights groups report that Falun Gong practitioners in China are subject to a wide range of human rights abuses; hundreds of thousands are believed to have been imprisoned extrajudicially, and practitioners in detention are subject to forced labor, psychiatric abuse, torture, and other coercive methods of thought reform at the hands of Chinese authorities.

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which existed from 1100 to 1450 AD during the country’s Late Iron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 722 hectares (1,784 acres) and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people. Great Zimbabwe acted as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of their political power. (Source: Wikipedia)

Part two of a request I received to compare scans of old negatives with scans of prints produced from said negatives. See part one here: www.flickr.com/photos/itendswithtens/4255417525/

Plustek Opticfilm 7300 at 3600dpi, no sharpening or grain reduction, color untouched beyond basic histogram tweaking. Scanned to uncompressed TIFF through Silverfast, then compressed to JPEG with RIOT optimization plugin for Irfanview, quality set to 88% with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Full compression quality and chroma sampling produce a file too large to upload to Flickr (lots of grain means lots of random data, which makes the image that much harder to compress), so I did what I had to. The difference is effectively nonexistent.

As intense as the grain is in this, I was surprised to find that there's noticeably more detail represented here than at 1800dpi; one even begins to see the delicate vertical lines on the outer skin of the towers here, which don't show up at lower scan resolutions. Scanning a poorly stored negative after over twenty-six years will naturally come with the danger of scratches, yes, but the detail level does go up appreciably.

I am overwhelmingly pleased with this image. Ironically I was just saying to a friend yesterday how I have been feeling really unfulfilled with photography lately. How it seems that we are so inundated today with photographs, photographs, photographs everywhere we look and even when we are not looking. Everyone considers themself a photographer and "photography" feels dead.

So I threw this old roll of 120 in with another roll I was developing for a friend, and low and behold this frame comes up from back in April of last year. And I'm in awe of it as if I didn't even make it myself. Perhaps it is the magical happenstance that comes with making double exposures that pleases me? Because this image is certainly more intriguing than either of the 2 separate exposures by themselves. Where to go from here? Who knows...
