There are numerous Incan ruins and fortresses along the Inca Trail, such as Wiñay Wayna. Typically, they have a defensible entry point and internal waterworks with integrated, terraced agricultural areas. Wiñay Wayna is a half day's trek from the gates of Machu Picchu and was the perfect location to set up camp for the night.

When hiking in the Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve recently I observed a crew directed by Marin Park Rangers fencing in a posted area that had recently experienced a wildfire. The Open Space Districts are patrolled and maintained by these rangers for the benefit of the public. In this case, the burned area is being fenced-in until 2013 to help it recover to it's natural state.

Near San Agustin, Colombia a pre Incan culture left many carved statues in and near their tombs and sacred places. Many of the statues depict a rather blood thirsty deity. An hour walk from town brings one to a site of excavated tombs and a display of statues and statuettes in a forest reserve trail.

The Pacific-Union Club is a private social club located at 1000 California Street in San Francisco, California, at the top of Nob Hill. It was founded in 1889 as a merger of two earlier clubs: the Pacific Club (founded 1852) and the Union Club (founded 1854).
The clubhouse was built as the home for the silver magnate James Clair Flood. The former Flood Mansion is located in the Nob Hill neighborhood. It was designed by Willis Polk. It is considered the first brownstone constructed west of the Mississippi River. Along with the Fairmont Hotel across the street, these were the only structures in the area to survive the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.
This club figured prominently in the history of the west coast of the United States. Many prominent citizens have been active among its membership. To this day, the club's membership remains all male per its charter.

If you are old enough you might remember that even small towns had street car systems. Most of those systems were discontinued in favor of buses in the late 1950s and early 1960s. San Francisco did not follow the trend. In recent years the city has adopted cars from systems around the country and some international cities. Lovingly restored, they are merrily transporting passengers.
This is an example of the President's Conference Committee (PCC) streetcar that was designed in 1935. These street cars were meant to modernize the look of the streetcar.

North of Rio de Janeiro is Cabo Frio. Yacht Keramos passed through the narrow strait on our voyage along the Brazilian coast. According to myth, Tepoztlán is the birthplace over 1200 years ago of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god widely-worshipped in ancient Mexico.
It has not yet been possible to determine who first inhabited the area.
As my friend and I descended from an overnight expedition into the Parque El Tepozteco highlands we observed the scenic cliffs and valley below shrouded by the haze created from Mexico City 100 kms to the north.

Coastal redwoods such as the pictured trees growing in Armstrong Redwoods State Park in the Russian River area of Sonoma, California are the worlds tallest trees. Some of the trees in this park exceed the height of a 30+ story building. The high canopy blocks out much of the sun leaving other trees in a struggle to compete for the remaining sunshine.

Wat Jedee Luang or Wat Chedi Luang is a Buddhist temple in the historic center of Chiang Mai, Thailand which dates back to the 14th century. It was then 82 m high and had a base diameter of 54 m, at that time the largest building of all Lanna. In 1468, the Emerald Buddha was installed in the eastern niche. In 1545, the upper 30 m of the structure collapsed after an earthquake, and shortly thereafter, in 1551, the Emerald Buddha was moved to Luang Prabang.
