Ilha do Marajó, at the mouth of the Rio Para/Amazonas, is the largest island to be completely surrounded by freshwater in the world. Although its northeast coastline faces the Atlantic Ocean, the outflow from the Amazon is so great that the sea at the mouth is quite unbriny for some distance from shore. The island sits almost directly on the equator. The crew of the yacht Keramos made a landing to visit this island prior to our departure into the Atlantic.

A unique forest fragment of Bishop Pine covers Mt. Vision within Point Reyes National Seashore. Normally this tree species is found hundreds of kilometers to the south but since Point Reyes lies on the west side of the San Andreas fault line it has been slowly creeping for millennia northwards as the fault slips, displacing it from it's normal range.

The foggy marine climate has encouraged spanish moss to grow in abundance on the branches of this bearded tree.

Near San Agustin, Colombia a pre Incan culture left many carved statues in and near their tombs and sacred places. Many of the statues depict a rather blood thirsty deity. An hour walk from town brings one to a site of excavated tombs and a display of statues and statuettes in a forest reserve trail.

Gunung Kawi is an 11th century temple complex in Tampaksiring north east of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. The candis of Gunung Kawi are believed to be constructed in the 11th century (1080 AD) by king Anak Wungsu in honor of his father, the great Balinese ruler Udayana.

The term candi refers to the abode of Candika, Goddess of Death, and consort of Lord Siva. The rock-hewn candis are a wholly Balinese phenomenon, unknown elsewhere in the world.

Fire is an integral part of a redwood forest. Since the sap of a coastal redwood is water-based and the bark thick and resilient, this species of tree is able to withstand intense fires that would destroy most other trees. As the image shows, a redwood will slowly heal a wound caused by fire.

Golden Gate Park's Children's Playground was the first public playground in the country. Three different carrousels have been housed here. The Hershell Spillman Carrousel was built in 1914 in North Tonawanda NY and was installed at the World's Fair on Treasure Island in 1928. It was then moved to GGP where it remains today. One of less than 100 turn of the century wooden carrousels to remain intact and in full operation, this restored carrousel has delighted young and old alike since 1984.

The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). During the journey the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades.

This ancient monument is one of the most visited sites in Java. Many young travelers on the Europe to Australia overland journey both past and present may remember visiting this incredible temple.
