Thanks to a recent major gift from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser, presenting a complex synthesis of art and politics, “Photography in Mexico” explores Mexico’s diverse and distinctively rich photography tradition from the 1920s until today. Photographies being exhibited include Edward Weston’s “Pirámide del Sol”, Teotihuacán, 1923; Lola Álvarez Bravo’s “Los gorrones”, 1955; Graciela Iturbide’s “Nuestra Señora de las Iguanas”, Juchitan, Oaxaca, Mexico, 1979; and Alejandro Cartagena’s “Fragmented Cities, Juarez #2” from the Suburbia Mexicana series, 2007.
The exhibit covers the period following the Mexican Revolution, when international artists such as Tina Modotti and Edward Weston found creative inspiration in Mexico and, in turn, helped to inspire Mexican photographers like Lola Álvarez Bravo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo.
One of my favorite Mexican photographers, Boris de Swan, oddly seems to have been excluded from this collection.

Baños, Ecuador is a popular destination for travelers. Nestled on the lower flanks of the very active volcano, Tungurahua, it has been subject to several evacuations in recent years. There is a basilica in town dedicated to a virgin who saved the village from the might of an eruption several centuries ago and there are beautiful day hikes to some spectacular falls and access into the Amazon lowlands. A nice foot bridge allows one to traverse this wild river.

Near San Agustin, Colombia a pre Incan culture left many carved statues in and near their tombs and sacred places. Many of the statues depict a rather blood thirsty deity. An hour walk from town brings one to a site of excavated tombs and a display of statues and statuettes in a forest reserve trail.

The temple probably dates to the fourteenth century. It was built on the south slopes of Mount Agung, the principal volcano of Bali. The temple is actually a complex made up of twenty-two temples that sit on parallel ridges. It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that lead up to the main spire Meru structure, which is called Pura Penataran Agung. All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred.

Extensive natural forest has been preserved in the high slopes of the volcanic Zomba Plateau, a geologic feature of the Great Rift Valley passing through Malawi. The altitude provides a perfect climate for a plantation pine forestry reserve in the lower valley, offering visitors camping, hiking and even trout fishing. Ilha do Marajó, at the mouth of the Rio Para/Amazonas, is the largest island to be completely surrounded by freshwater in the world. Although its northeast coastline faces the Atlantic Ocean, the outflow from the Amazon is so great that the sea at the mouth is quite unbriny for some distance from shore. The island sits almost directly on the equator. The crew of the yacht Keramos made a landing to visit this island prior to our departure into the Atlantic.

A unique forest fragment of Bishop Pine covers Mt. Vision within Point Reyes National Seashore. Normally this tree species is found hundreds of kilometers to the south but since Point Reyes lies on the west side of the San Andreas fault line it has been slowly creeping for millennia northwards as the fault slips, displacing it from it's normal range.
