CSXT local L004 out of Framingham has arrived af their destination here at about MP QBU 6.2 on CSXT's Fitchburg Secondary, a former New Haven (originally Old Colony Railroad) route. They dropped their train of 18 empty gons on the branchline main and have now dropped down the hill into the Win Waste facility and are gathering up 18 loads from the three stub ended tracks.

This customer has breathed new life into the north end of this historic route and now trains run three days a week always with a pair of GP40-2s. And word is they are negotiating with CSXT to up service to 5 days a week which would be a remarkable turnaround for a line many had feared was on borrowed time!

To learn some history of this old school meandering 30 mile long branchline check out the long caption with the earlier post in this series.

Velvet Elvis has left the building....

Amtrak Downeaster train 695 from North Station to Brunswick is eastbound on Main 1 of the Western Route mainline passing through CP AS at MP 25.6. The four car train with a GE P42DC on the rear is led by AMTK 740 an EMD GP38-3 delivered in December 2023 and dressed in the railroad's new Phase VII paint scheme.

This unit was most recently rebuilt by Progress Rail from PRLX 2297 but has a long history. It was originally built as a GP38-2 in Aug. 1972 as Penn Central 8034 then passed to Conrail four years later and keeping the same number. After being returned to EMD when the lease was up it entered the LLPX lease fleet until going to the Union Pacific under a long term operating lease in 1997. It wore numbers UP 1966 and 466 until being retired in 2003. It then became LLPX2287 until joining GATX's lease fleet after they bought out EMD's leasing arm when it then became GMTX 2297 and continued spend time on UP just now dressed in blue and white instead of Armour yellow.

The train is approaching the Andover Street crossing as it passes the remains of the one bustling Boston and Maine freight yard which still remains in use as by new owner CSXT as a base for a few locals. At left providing a backdrop is a ubiquitous brick mill building. This particular one dates from 1900 and was once home to the Monomac Spinning Company, producers worsted yarns for weaving and knitting. Today it is known as Heritage Place and has been beautifully restored as residential and office space.

Lynette was reluctant to drive the muddy lake rd today. We washed the suv yesterday, whenever we are going to the big city, she wants to wash it. In keeping with our normal one-day clean car we got it a bit dirty today. Mud Lake rd was a little drier than last time we drove it,

Christmas Like a Child ~Third Day

I want to feel Christmas, how it used to be

With all of it's wonder falling on me

This season has felt so empty, oh for quite a while

I want to feel Christmas like a child

I want to see snowflakes fall to the ground

My brothers and sisters all gathered around

Singing "Away In A Manager" as we sit by the fire

I want to feel Christmas like a child

It's been so long now, I can't say

Just when I lost my way

But I'm going back to how it was

When this day meant everything

And we spent our time remembering

The baby Child born for us

It's all about Jesus, asleep in the straw

This infant, this King, this Savior for all

So I don't need bells to be ringing

'Cause I'll join with angels singing

Gloria

And I can feel Christmas like a child

I want to feel Christmas like a child...

St. Nicholas Cathedral. Russia, St. Petersburg, Kronstadt

I went on a fishing trip the other day. The fishing went terribly bad. We took a little walk on the beach trying to find something interesting. That also went terribly bad.

I ended up coming home, having caught one fish, and with one frame shot on the memory card.

Savior-Andronikov Monastery, Moscow, Russia

The Savior Cathedral of the Savior-Andronikov Monastery is an Orthodox church, a monument of the early Moscow architecture of the 15th century. It is the oldest partially preserved Orthodox church in Moscow outside the Moscow Kremlin.

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Other names include the Church on Spilled Blood the Temple of the Savior on Spilled Blood and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.

Erected on the site where political nihilists fatally wounded Emperor Alexander II in March 1881, the church was constructed between 1883 and 1907, funded by the imperial family.

Construction began in 1883 during the reign of Alexander III, two years after the assassination of his father Alexander II. The church was dedicated to be a memorial to his father. Estimates suggest that the construction cost 4.5 million rubles. The construction was completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Funding was provided by the Imperial family with the support of many private donors.

The church is prominently situated along the Griboedov Canal; paved roads run along both sides of the canal. On March 13, 1881 (Julian date: March 1), as Alexander II's carriage passed along the embankment, a grenade thrown by an anarchist conspirator exploded. The tsar, shaken but unhurt, got out of the carriage and started to remonstrate with the presumed culprit. A second conspirator took the chance to throw another bomb, killing himself and mortally wounding the tsar. The tsar, bleeding heavily, was taken back to the Winter Palace, where he died a few hours later.

walk past this one a lot.

Cathedral of the Savior of Zaragoza

Zaragoza metropolitan cathedral, usually called "la Seo" was built on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Caesaraugusta and the greater Mosque of Saraqusta, from whose minaret elements still remain in the current tower. The building was started in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and has been the subject of many reforms and extensions until 1704 in which the baroque spire is placed, finishing off the tower.

Of the various styles that compose it, the most important elements are the following:

•Romanesque: on the outside, the lower part of the apse. The Romanesque interior of the apse is still preserved, but is currently hidden behind the Gothic altarpiece. In the sacristy, Gastón de Bearn's « oliphant », carved from 11th century ivory and the reliquary busts of San Valero (patron saint of Zaragoza), San Vicente and San Lorenzo donated by the antipope Benedict XIII.

•Gothic: mixed with the Mudejar, especially in the upper part of the exterior of the apse. The current plan of the temple is also Gothic, the result of various extensions. Currently it is a church with a living room or Hallenkirche, consisting of five naves of equal height, covered by suggestive rib vaults, ranging from the simple rib vault, passing through the calls of terraces, to those of starry ribs, fruit of the so-called flamboyant or final gothic. The vaults rest on slender fasciculated pillars, crowned with capitals with plant ornamentation, the oldest and with heraldic motifs at the foot of the cathedral that were already made in the 16th century. Magnificent polychrome alabaster main altarpiece made by Pere Johanand Hans of Swabia , which is considered a capital work of European Gothic. Choir stalls. Museum of Flemish tapestries from the XV, XVI and XVII centuries , one of the 3 best collections in the world. In the funeral chapel of San Miguel (Parroquieta), he is the tomb of the Archbishop Don Lope Fernandez de Luna of the fourteenth century.

•Mudéjar: exterior wall of the Parroquieta de San Miguel and inside it a golden wooden roof. Upper part of the exterior of the apses. The Aragonese Mudejar has been declared a World Heritage Site. Beautifully built and well proportioned, it is the current dome , which crowns the cathedral's transept and illuminates the chancel, made in the 16th century, straddling the end of the Gothic-Mudejar and the incipient Renaissance style.

•Renaissance: include the choir with its chapels, as well as the Chapel of San Bernardo, carved in alabaster, the Archangels and San Pedro Arbués of Elizabethan style.

•Baroque: the Seo bell tower, which was designed by the Italian architect Juan Bautista Contini. The classicist facade, which is currently considered the main one of the temple, next to the tower, is also baroque, although in reality it corresponds to the access of an arm of the transept. We must also highlight the decoration of some chapels and especially the interior covers of them.

Úbeda (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈuβeða]; from Arabic Ubbada al-`Arab and this from Iberian Ibiut) is a town in the province of Jaén in Spain's autonomous community of Andalusia, with 34,733 (data 2017) inhabitants. Both this city and the neighbouring city of Baeza benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved ever since. In 2003, UNESCO declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

The most outstanding feature of the city is the monumental Vázquez de Molina Square, surrounded with imposing Renaissance buildings such as the Palacio de las Cadenas (so named for the decorative chains which once hung from the façade) and the Basílica de Santa María de los Reales Alcázares. The Chapel of the Savior or Capilla del Salvador was constructed to house the tombs of local nobility. Both the interior and exterior are decorated; for example, interior has an elaborate metawork screen by the ironworker Bartolomé de Jaen. The Hospital de Santiago, designed by Vandelvira in the late 16th century, with its square bell towers and graceful Renaissance courtyard, is now the home of the town's Conference Hall. Ubeda has a Parador hotel, housed in a 16th-century palace which was the residence of a high-ranking churchman of that period.

The town lends its name to a common figure of speech in Spanish, andar por los cerros de Úbeda (literally 'to walk around the hills of Úbeda'), meaning 'to go off at a tangent'.

The city possesses 48 monuments, and more of another hundred of buildings of interest, almost all of them of Renaissance style. Though to the romantic travelers of the 18th and 19th centuries it impressed more the Muslim flavor of its streets than this Renaissance brilliance. All this patrimony led Úbeda to being the second city of renowned Spain Historical – artistic Set, in the year 1955. In the year 1975 it received the appointment of the Council of Europe as Exemplary City of the Renaissance. Finally, in 2003 it was named a World Heritage Site, together with Baeza, by UNESCO.

This famous chapel, built between 1536 and 1559, is the flagship of Úbeda Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by Francisco de los Cobos y Molina as his family's funerary chapel, it presents a marked contrast between the relatively sober proportions of the interior (by Diego de Siloé, architect of Granada's cathedral) and the more decorative western facade. The facade, a pre-eminent example of plateresque style, was designed by Andrés de Vandelvira, one of Siloé's stonemasons, who took over the project in 1540.

The chapel thus represents the first architectural commission obtained by Vandelvira, who went on to endow Úbeda, Baeza and Jaén with most of their outstanding Renaissance buildings. He worked in tandem with the French sculptor Esteban Jamete, who carved an orgy of classical sculpture depicting Greek gods on the underside of the facade arch, and scattered numerous skulls among the facade's decoration in a reminder that the building is a funerary chapel. Classical figures are also prominent in the sacristy (accessed from the northeast corner of the interior), another Vandelvira creation, but are absent from the main body of the chapel – where the Capilla Mayor sits beneath a stately dome painted in gold, blue and red, and features a grand 1560s altarpiece sculpture of the transfiguration by Alonso de Berruguete.

The Cobos family tombs lie beneath the floor of the chapel and aren't open to visitors. The chapel is still privately owned by the Seville-based Medinaceli ducal family, descendants of the Cobos. The audio guide is full of interesting information and anecdotes and well worth listening to as you go round the chapel.

Next to the chapel stands what was originally its chaplain's residence, the Palacio del Deán Ortega – another Vandelvira creation. The mansion is now Úbeda’s luxurious parador hotel.
